Wait, jurors can just have access to their phone while they deliberate? Doesn’t that kind of defeat the purpose of an unbiased jury if they can access what the public zeitgeist’s opinions and feelings are?

It is actually pretty uncommon for a jury to be sequestered and blocked from accessing news and media

But they still generally can’t bring a phone into a courthouse

You generally aren't allowed to use them in the courtroom but you can definitely bring them into the courthouse.

Yeah seems like bullshit, when I did mine we had to hand over all electronics during proceedings and deliberation but you did get them bacn during lunch break.

There are thousands of jurisdictions in the US. They can all have their own courtroom procedure (as long as they follow the constitution).
