My parents had the same conversation that night. My dad did get deployed, first to Afghanistan then Iraq. He was a year from his retirement from the Air Force in 2001 and didn’t get to retire until 2007. Did your dad get deployed too?
My dad was in the Reserves and got called up after 9/11 but thankfully was in an intelligence unit and stationed in Tampa (and got moved back home after 4 months when my mom was diagnosed with breast cancer)
He went back active duty to Bahrain and Afghanistan during the constant Middle East conflicts after that over the next several years.
My father in law was Air National Guard and activated multiple times as well. He was in Afghanistan at the same time as my dad when my son, their first grandkid was a few months old. The burn pits destroyed his lungs and he passed a few years ago
