Hence why its so common to hear "Assault and Battery" as paired charges.

Threatened someone (Assault) and actually hit them (Battery)

Yup! Many people think you cant defend yourself until you are hit first. Totally not true. Cops train on 10 FEET being "the death zone" - anyone within that distance CAN attack you and kill you. For civilians, this tightens up to arms length. Anyone who can swing on you is close enough to do you harm -- threatening gestures, even threatening WORDS, "im going to kill you MFer!" -- allows you to respond with enough force to neutralize the threat so you can get to safety. 

Nobody should ever WAIT until someone hits them first to decide, "yup, now its ok" -- they could catch you with a lucky shot and drop you, cause you to hit your head, etc. I actually have a relative who got involved in a group fight and got sucker punched, fell and broke his neck. Never wait if you feel threatened!

(Check your local laws about self defense, they may differ)

I was trained that the distance is about 22 feet.

Have your friend stand at 22 feet and on "go" see if they can draw a fake pistol (their finger in a gun shape in their pocket for this drill) and put it on you as the target before you reach them. People can close 22 feet faster than you think, especially if they have bad intentions.

Most especially if they have any sort of throwing weapon such as a knife and are even halfway decent at actually hitting their targets with it. Folks really have no idea how fast a half decently trained person can close that distance to attack them.

Just the point most people don't realize how quickly situations can turn dangerous or deadly. They tend to willingly let dangerous people walk directly in to their face before even reacting -- And as someone pointed out, its actually twice this distance.  Tueller Drill says 21 feet. 

I agree, someone wants to pop off -- you better be ready to go to!

One or two punches ends the threat. Everything beyond is attempted murder.

You get what you get when you mess with people in public these days, but make no mistake, that dude is an unhinged animal who should be locked up away from society. Sucks for lunger!
