I'm sorry but this is recency bias. People have no idea how bad the PS3 was when it launched. Yes I agree the first party games are lacking this generation compared to the previous two.

The PS3 was saved by free online multiplayer and great exclusives towards the end. While the PS5 has been great, I feel like people are dooming because there hasn't been a monumental exclusive game yet. There's a high chance that Naughty Dog doesn't even release a solely PS5 exclusive game.
Meanwhile, the PS4 got exclusives like Bloodborne, Spider-Man, God of War, Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted 4, Ghost of Tsushima, Detroit: Become Human, and TLOU2.
That's really the core of it. The PS5 is selling fine and the hardware is great, but there's no system-seller that makes someone feel like they NEED a PS5 yet. The PS4 had like five of those by this point in the cycle. People are confusing a weak exclusive lineup with a bleak future, and this article runs with that confusion.
It sounds like a lot of the console community have locked in with Sony and don't really have any options for jumping ship.
There's always building a PC, but only a small percentage of the community will be willing to build/buy and learn how to set it up.
I think right now all three consoles are in an odd spot. None of them seem to be having any major wins recently. I suspect the price of hardware and supporting physical media is making it more of a struggle.
The PS3 had to improve because Sony was actually fighting for market share. The PS5 doesn't have that pressure, and neither will the PS6. There is zero competition forcing them to innovate, they just need to be slightly better than the Xbox ecosystem that is already drowning. If anything, pointing out how financially successful the PS5 is right now makes the situation worse.
People forget how they turned the PS3 around as well. Competitive pricing and great single player experiences.
Gamers are paying for Sony’s bad business decisions with increased subscription prices, as well as fewer games to play. GTA 6 is carrying 2026 but besides Heretic (a game that shows it could have similar issues to Wolverine) what is in the pipeline?
PS5 could be financially successful for Sony but is absolutely a lacking experience for customers and leaves them dissatisfied. Many of those PS5 customers were anyways not going to return for another PS gen even before Sony started shitting the bed actively.
PS3 was a completely different story. That was a gen where Sony had some shame for their mistakes and made amends throughout the gen to provide a worthwhile ownership experience to the customers. By the end of gen most people were happy with the variety of exclusives.
PS3 had a rough launch due to being a bit too cockey early on due to the last gen success. But they came out the other side with a fairly well build reputation, and successes once they toned down... PSN downtime aside.
They are even more cocky on their own last gen success now, but show no signs of backing down like they did with the PS3 to change things. Infact they seem more stubborn

"No its not bleak bcs the PS5 is selling a lot!!!" when the argument being made is that Sony is barely releasing any games, closed multiple Fan favorite studios and cancelled more than a dozen games in the last 4 years, with their Bungie acquisition being a total flop as well.
How do the sales benefit you? What are you playing from Sony this year apart from GPS marker simulator for 10 hours?
