That engine also was what initially soured expectations when they stressed the engine to do open world systems like with Dragon's Dogma 2 and Monster Hunter Wilds (so many things the occulsion culling didn't do). They hope the REX engine can handle open worlds so we'll wait and see.
Too bad instead they just keep on laying off people who hold immense tribal knowledge and wonder why projects take forever with people who have no experience.
Crazy too see cause Capcom was doing really bad from 2010-2017 but after RE7 they’ve consistently done very well, albeit blunders like MH:Wilds & DD3 launch.
Also happy they’re still taking risk with new IP like Pragmata.
Yeah, Nintendo is absolutely looking like they'll be winning above the other big competition for the next few years at least. Not sure that's saying much considering all they have to do to be above Sony and Microsoft is not shoot themselves in the foot a thousand times but hey, a win's a win.
For those not sure what I mean, there's a lot to be excited for with Nintendo rn. Ocarina of Time Remake, Metroid Ravenous, open world Kirby game, Pokemon Winds and Waves next year. That last one is the one I'm most unsure about but even as someone who hasn't played Pokemon since Sun and Moon, I have to admit it looks like it has promise. Whether it'll meet that promise is what I'm unsure about.
Yeah, Duskbloods is a weird game—an unusual mix of ideas—and among all the consoles, Nintendo is the place where creative game ideas have the best chance.
Oh yeah I completely forgot about that! Won't be playing it myself cause I'm not a huge multiplayer fan but, it does look like a fun time for those who are.
While at the same time keeping those same franchises fresh. They’ll do fan service, followed by reinvention, more fan service, etc. The time lapse between each fan service game is usually enough time to have fans ready for another “same-y” type game. Those “same-y” type games also cost less to make, allowing it to be a healthy business. Without a healthy gaming business, they cannot continue doing business since they have nothing else propping up their company.
I just had this conversation with my wife and Nintendo’s problem is the old guard. Everyone in Nintendo is really old and the company will experience a wave of staffing changes at once that might make or break them.
Miyamoto is in his 70s, the producers of every other games are in their 60s and maybe the Smash Bros and Animal crossing guys are in their 50s. I hope they’ve been priming their next gen talent and replacements for brand leaders to follow their key success models.
I would say they have been pretty good at that. Its hard to replace Miyamoto, Aonuma or Sakurai but they already did well when they gave Kozumi the Mario series and are letting young and talented minds like Ito, Terada and Sano direct their own Spinoffs of major titles like Splatoon and Zelda which both where really great.
So i would say they are pretty aware that they cant rely on the old guard and need fresh air in the big positions.
"What are you going to do now you're retired, honey?"
"Well the garden gate needs fixing for a start. And I've a mind that maybe we'll get a chicken coop for the garden. I can fix my lawnmower and I don't know start a small franchise of theme parks and be involved with creating some multi-billion dollar movies and remain the public glad-handing face of arguably the biggest gaming company on the face of the Earth, setting up a successful museum to further celebratetheir vision. Oh and maybe potter about in the shed a bit and spend more time with the grandkids."
They've been training new staff to replace the old guard for years. A lot of the direction of newer games is specifically because they've hired people who grew up playing the originals.
Nintendo should have got development systems out to developers way earlier before release though. Even as of 6 months ago there were news articles saying development systems are extremely scarce and hard to get ahold on. Its led to a trickle of Switch 2 ground up games from 3rd parties, the majority of them are Switch 1 games with Switch 2 unlocks.
I can agree with that and I wanna state, I wasn't trying to say there's no issues with Nintendo. Obviously there is, but right now they're the only one of the big 3 consistently making good to great games without all the live service bullshit, AI or other pitfalls AAA games seem to be hell bent on pushing on us lately.
Never bet on Gamefreak to make a good game. I'm sure it will still sell 30M+ copies because the fandom can't help themselves, but they consistently phone in the effort every time.
Arceus was the most creative thing they've done in a long time, and even that didn't look great. After the better than expected performance of Arceus, they decided to follow it up with a corridor simulator in Z-A with graphics straight out of 2005.
Then we thought the Beast of Reincarnation would finally show what they're capable of, but it was once again half-baked.
Nintendo sells nostalgia. They don't innovate, the gameplay loop hasn't evolved in 2 decades. You're buying them because you enjoyed them as a kid and want that cosy feeling again.
Have you actually played a Nintendo game like...ever? Cause you're objectively incorrect even on a surface level. You're gonna tell me that Mario Galaxy is the same as Mario Odyssey? Or that Zelda Skyward Sword is the same as Breath of The Wild/Tears of The Kingdom? Or that Metroid Prime is the same as Metroid Dread? Or that Kirby Superstar/Superstar Ultra is the same as Kirby and The Forgotten Lands? Those are just a few examples off the top of my head.
If you're not trolling are you actually going to say that with a straight face? The ONLY example you could potentially use and have any semblance of a point would be Pokemon and that's not fully handled by Nintendo themselves.
I suspect I'm wasting my time and this will all be lost on a ragebait contrarian bot like yourself tho.
Before anyone mentions their strictness with fan projects/emulation in general, Japanese law is especially strict in terms of protecting IPs, copyright, and patents, so if they aren’t being litigious, they run the risk of losing ownership of their properties (although I doubt anyone in Japan’s government would have the balls to do so even if that weren’t the case)
I do have my quibbles with some of that, and their lawsuit against Palworld was just absurd, but this was generally the direction I wondered they might be going in by saying Nintendo is also not innocent.
They're not perfect, buuuuuuut they're also the only console maker in the last decade who sold over 150M units, and with zero official price cuts to their console during its run and the Switch 2 still seems to be selling very well. Folks were legit pissed when the new Zelda 40th Anniversary model sold out and was already being scalped, but Nintendo have confirmed more will be made available, and that system is priced at $520 which is a bit more than the new MSRP of $500, and folks still want the damn thing.
I do not see folks clamoring for Xbox Series X/S and/or the PS5 in the same manner.
I disagree and I strongly believe they are a very mixed bag currently. I will give you 2 valid reasons:
after BotW success somehow snapped and they tried to move every IP they have in this format and I truly dont get it - DK Bananza, MK World, MP4 to a degree, Kirby recently and obviously PKMN games for at least 3 installments. It feels like they dont want to make games they want to play, but are going into most boring direction while trying to emphasize on nostalgia as much as they can (not all, look how new Metroid Ravenous feels like understood it and went to 2D setting and got something that looks exciting)
Nintendo showcases in the past used to have games that looked like they want to play as well and are proud about creating. Now its business only, buy our merch and limited stuff and sprinkle some games on top. Pure business approach, "no fun" allowed anymore
What a load of crap. The kind of people who'd want to play them would just accept the more easily-pirated PC port and continue to not pay for them. Nobody is going to buy a Switch 2 for Twilight Princess. Nobody.
piracy can give you access, but only legit channels can advertise. once people play the old games, they would look for newer games.... and some of them would buy the consoles
of course, i would rather prefer that these games are not exclusives ...
Exclusives promote innovation. Ring Fit would never get made if Sony and Valve had homogenised gaming because the far more versatile Joy-Cons wouldn't exist to support it. Look no further than the fact that motion controls for first- and third-person shooters are still not ubiquitous despite Splatoon vividly highlighting how beneficial they are, and both Nintendo and Sony allowing other games to take full advantage, including Doom and Fortnite. Why aren't they universal? Because Microsoft still refuses to bother with them, which means one entire platform and the most popular choice of PC controller cannot accommodate them.
Without the option for platform-exclusives like Splatoon you lose that ability to innovate in genres that were thought to have had their controls refined to the point of diminishing returns.
once people play the old games, they would look for newer games.... and some of them would buy the consoles
of course, i would rather prefer that these games are not exclusives ...
In other words, you're asserting that they'd sell more consoles all while fervently hoping that they eventually abandoned those consoles and just made games for your preferred platform instead.
are they though? I feel like they are kinda limping along, they just aren't making any big mistakes. Its not like they are really releasing bangers either.
They release bangers pretty much every year. Yeah, you might not hoover up all of them, but this year has had Pokopia, Splatoon Raiders, and it looks like Fire Emblem and Ocarina are both going to be sick. Duskbloods I won't comment on cos I don't even know if it's still 2026 for sure.
Meanwhile PS5 has had... Saros.
Anyone who says Nintendo 'aren't really releasing bangers' has just decided to not count their games out of personal preference, and not any objective assessment.
Except that basically every Nintendo game is for casuals or children. Their consoles are for casuals. If you want to play competitive multiplayer games, ARPGs, or other big name titles, and you want to play them at high res or high fps, you wouldn't buy a Switch.
There's a massive portion of gamers who don't have any interest in anything Nintendo releases because it only caters to people who like Nintendo exclusives, and all of them are casual games other than Smash Bros.
Consoles are already significantly worse than PCs, and Nintendo has the worst console unless you actually care about handheld mode.
How? Switch 2 is not even a new console anymore and it's still not worth buying because there are only a handful of good games.
Most of the games are remasters, slop like Pokemon or half-assed games lacking content (like MKW which got an open world but no fun content in it like Diddy Kong Racing had).
Still thinking about getting one for the OoT remake though plus the next Mario game.
How? Not a single game they make has me interested. Even the Ocarina of Time remake looks mid. Duskbloods looks underwhelming too and the framerate sucks.
That's just your opinion. Zelda ocarina direct was watched by more than 2 million people and both special edition console and game sold out immediately. That's more than twice of Sony's state of play viewers and even more than Gamescon opening night stream. Let that sink in first of how huge Nintendo is compared to everything else right now.

Nintendo is cooking tho
