I know that story. I just started at a new school and am in 4 different classrooms. Each of the smart TV boards has different quirks that I have spent the last 2 weeks trying to understand. 2 won't work with HDMI from my computer, 2 do. One has a screen full of maths that I need to get rid of to get it onto the Windows setting then use a USB. It is enough to do my head in...

I was in IT specific classes. When we got one of the rooms with a smart screen it wasn't working and it was also a room with not enough computers for every student and not enough power outlets to charge our own devices. Meanwhile cooking and crafring classes got all the fancy tech they didn't even use

We have started using smart boards at the school where I teach at a few years ago. I teach HS physics so I'd greatly appreciate any such features for drawing shapes and graphs.
The ones we have come with softwares that are very capable as it is. And it has been a huge net positive. I used to have to practice drawing the diagrams beforehand and decide how I was going to sketch the 3D shapes especially but its been made so much easier now. Granted, it takes some of the fun away when you just show a diagram and not draw it. So students have no idea how to go about drawing it themselves when they copy. But it has been a great timesaver for me at the least.
Its good to see the tech evolving in the right direction though. Use of AI to make a dumb drawing software a little bit more understanding rather than make it replace me is always welcome!

I remember when they started using something similar to this in middle school and none of the teachers could understand technology so most of class was trying to get things to work. Then we never saw anything like it used again throughout high school and college.

Favorite part was cleaning the erasers. Nothing felt more like being a wizard than creating a cloud of dust in whatever creative way we could think up.

Not better enought and affordable, a lot of teachers aren't tech savvy and unfortunately with the minimal time teachers get, something manual that will always work is often far better

I remember when my high school first got smart boards. We only knew of 1 teacher in the entire school who could use it competently. The rest struggled with calibration issues, freezing, and crashing.

Yes they are called smart boards and we had them on another fucking 2001 IN OHIO. We still have them. How the fuck are any of you amazed by this? Isn't ohio supposed to be like diet Florida, the thing you made fun of when you didn't want it to hit too close to home?
My family built an airport in Ohio. Right across from it was a fucking asbestos dumb and you could not know this without passing a trespassing point, it's literally illegal to know there is an asbestos dumb across from the Gilmore pkmds nature preserve. It's right next to Fairfield highschool, which is across the street from jungle Jim's, one of the most prominent international food markets in the whole fucking country. Jungle Jim used to sell cocaine, like it's not a secret, all of us who grew up here have family with pictures of the fucking plates like it's god dam Scarface.
There's also a reserve base between the school and Market, and on the other side is the nature preserve, the airport my family the Hogan's built, it's called hogan field, the asbestos dump across from the airfield, you can see the gas reliefs to the left when you drive by. And then is where I grew up on the left. The first place is now a shipping company, then the remains of E&j. My neighbor growing up, old man cooney. He was a steel magnate making the tall towers for grave yards and such. I lived next door, we had farmed the land with apple orchards and wild grapes and cherry and such till a local chemical plant exploded and killed it all. Used to make some very very good wild grape wine. All that's left is black raspberries, they don't last long so it's one of the only places to get them around here. Kinda wild they of all things survived when all else died.

I know this isn’t like related to the actual blackboard. But…. Can we like pay teachers more? Like not only do they have to try and educated these iPhone addicted social media fiends, they have to do with mostly subpar equipment, little to no actual time, and for little to measly pay.
I just think teachers, especially ones that might be using this cool but seeming slightly complicated board, should be compensated more then say, a garbage man or like the low to mid level corporate guy who’s essentially just filing paperwork for whatever company actually made the board.
Sorry i just see something like this and imagine what it would be like in a classroom for an American teacher and it really infuriates me that I probably make more money then them and I barely make enough to survive.

It's kind of incredible how rapidly that adoption step went though. Even here in Germany, a country whose schools are notoriously slow on technology (just mention overhead projectors to any German, and they will nod knowingly), it feels like they were introduced just after I graduated - though I guess the pace after that is a bit of a different topic.

This is cool, but honestly I feel like the tech I want in a classroom is as simple and rugged as possible even if it was fewer features. Like just give me an overhead projector and don't make me buy my own markers for it.

Teachers already have to do a lot of prep for lessons, and having a blackboard that can freeze up is just not worth the effort. There's a reason why even tech companies still use whiteboards, and these are still mostly a gimmick/supplementary.

We have lots of digital boards in schools in France (up to university). Installed for 10 years or so.
They are fucking annoying, there is latency, you need to be a dart world champion to click in the right place.
The whiteboards were the top of the game. Especially when using crayons (they wash off with water)

Has been a thing for a decade and is imho a textbook example for bad digitalization.
Imho, a projector with a good Tablet (like the big Wacoms screens, not an iPad) are way better.
Those digital blackboards are at best 4k, often just 1080p, so when you stand this close to them, it's hard on the eyes. Often it is also a short-throw projector mounted at the top, so you hand creates a shadow.
With a projector and a tablet, the teacher can face the class at all times, no need to turn their back on the class to write on the board, and the class can see the whole board / screen all the time, the teacher is not hiding parts of it when standing writing.
Digital blackboards imho are just another failed "let's copy the analog solution exactly into digital" attempt.

My school had board like this (not as advanced of course) almost 10 years ago. They were pretty decent, they definitely made learning a lot more fun. They came with a lot of pre made video modules and demonstrations that would be incorporated into classes. We did still have a blackboard/whiteboard next to it which most teachers preferred to use (even though the smart boards were pretty easy to navigate, they just didn’t have that tactile feeling)

I remember smart boards being a thing if not in my high school (‘04), definitely in my college (‘08).
These are definitely nicer/more advanced, after all it is ~20 years later. Not a fundamental change though.
Is it better though? IDK. It can be nice, but can also be really fiddly. Maybe one day smart boards will work seamlessly, but it is a really difficult use case.
Whiteboards/black boards, just don’t have a “failure case” like smart boards do as well. They won’t disconnect or run into a bug. The freeformedness and tacticleness are probably important features that have non-obvious benefits.

40+ years of research shows the more technology in the classroom, test scores/understanding goes down. In other words, I wouldn't want this in my kids classroom.
My kids elementary school leaned heavily on Chromebooks. My 5th grader can't spell to save her life, hand writing is worse now then what it was in 1st grade and her writing skills are awful.

These things are worse than a simple iPad protected to a big screen.
And the reason is simple: The teacher can look at the students while teaching. If you have a smart board, no matter how advanced it is, you always have to turn your back to the students while you're writing.

Wouldn't the whole point of learning to draw graphs from a table/formula be lost as you just magic a graph onto the screen?
It's like I thought the point was to manually draw this stuff so you could visually and practically see how it would be made. Sure at a higher level we just get the graphing calculator out, but the whole reason we do it manually at first is so we understand it on a basic level, the connection is formed because we're drawing it out.
