In the 1930s, the U.S. Navy operated two flying aircraft carriers, USS Akron and USS Macon. The 785-foot airships carried 5 Curtiss F9C Sparrowhawks inside their hulls, launching and recovering the biplanes in midair using a trapeze and hook system
