wait, I think I know the post you are talking about lol.... there was also a very recent twitter thread where they were saying Big's actions were justified because he was an 'avoidant' personality-type, and that bailing on the wedding was actually proof of how much he loved Carrie. And it was Carrie's fault (!!!) for not picking up Big's video call right before the wedding, and comforting him out of his very normal pre-wedding jitters apparently because it is de rigueur for men to freak out and put up no-shows at their own weddings, which means she was a bad partner and not attuned to his mental and emotional needs. The thread got so much love from women as well (either bots, or really silly women who think this shit is acceptable) who were basically echoing the same - either that thread was excellently done ragebait and a online experiment, or too many women actually subscribe to accepting all kinds of stupid shit from bad horrible men in their lives.
This is my big (lol) issue with that series. For a series about how empowered independent NYC women live their lives, the main character bends over backwards to try and be with this horrible, possessive, boring guy who barely pretends to acknowledge she's a human being so he can fuck her. It's not like Carrie is stupid, she seems very intelligent aside from her embarrassing obsession with Big. I can't believe there's like multiple seasons and movies where she somehow decides to marry him at the end?? Truly wtf.
And I think the sad thing is, I've been exactly in the position of dropping everything and worshiping some terrible mediocre man who did not respect me, so I know it's not unrealistic at all. I just wish they'd dropped Big as a character early on and given her someone who didn't do all that. I don't think Carrie deserved it. Okay, maybe she was a tiny bit terrible in her own ways but she at least deserved someone on her level rather than a manipulator.
Tbh that’s one of the things that always felt realistic about the series to me. Many of the most amazing, accomplished women I know are obsessed with absolute loser men who treat them as an accessory.
I remember seeing that and thinking that if I ever had to be there for a friend in a moment like that, i hope that I could carry the power that charlotte did in her tone for that scene. It was so powerful and raw.
This show aged like milk. I used to romanticize this show until I rewatched as an adult and realized how cringe and ironically un-feminine it is. The show makes women look like whiny desperate pick-me’s whose only mission in life is to find a man to make them feel self worth. They’ll have one moment of clarity where they realize as long as they have their careers and their friends they’ll be just fine and in the next episode they’re back to bending over backwards for a man’s attention or affection. It’s embarrassing.
100% agreed. We can like and enjoy characters without needing to endorse all their actions, or have them entirely align with our moral compass. The characters being three dimensional and imperfect are supposed to create drama and discussion. Carrie is flawed and human. she goes back to men that treat her poorly. She can be self centred. As we all can be. none of us are perfect.
I feel that female characters in particular are treated in this weird way, where you can’t like them if they’re imperfect. I haven’t heard anywhere near the same criticisms towards very clearly flawed male characters in popular shows. I think some of it is internalised misogyny.
If you’re referencing the scenes where Samantha is blatantly transphobic, or the uncomfortable episodes about race, I understand the reflexive comment that it “aged like milk”, but I think it’s an honest reflection of attitudes at the time which we should watch with the context in mind.
Remember that decades from now, our kids will be saying the same things about the tv shows we currently enjoy. That’s evolution, and it’s positive.
This is a great take, I recently rewatched it and came away thinking the exact same. I actually think her going back to Big in the end worked really well for the story. IMO the only ending that worked badly was Miranda apparently discovering what real love is by getting forced into a caregiver role. That was so depressing to watch.
I mean being there at the time-women were like that! My mum was totally like that in relation to men and these were totally attitudes people had at the time.
I feel like people have some bad media analysis with older shows, as they get deemed "problematic": it's cause WE were problematic.
The attitudes of more tolerance that we have in place today didn't start becoming in vogue until about 2013. Before then culturally it was fucking horrible and women were very conditioned to believe that needing a man and doing everything for a man's validation was normal. 'Cause it was.
Most women (at least over a certain age) are like that though. Their goal is to be chosen by a man and when they find one they sit back and tolerate his nonsense / spend their time complaining about him.
Extremely relatable, I have this whole stable of characters from movies and TV and books that I loveddddd adored worshipped as a younger person where now I’m like as an adult these people are genuinely terrible and I had bad taste but I still have a bit of fondness for them
She is one of the most selfish and obnoxious characters in TV history bu don't you dare say anything about her on the SATC sub, lest you be met with a dozen responses telling you that actually, she's just a little messy and the reason you hate her is because you actually see yourself in her. Yes, you. You're projecting because you're not ready to accept that you see yourself in the woman who cheated on her boyfriend, begged to get him back, then invited the man she cheated with over to his place.
Oh, God, I loved this. I hated Willow so much by this point, and loved that Giles actually called her out on her bullshit.
Willow was so frustrating because she did so many awful things even before she did HUGELY bad things, but all was always forgiven because she said things "cutely." Ugh.
But don't get me started on Season Sux or Willow's horrible "magic addiction" storyline anyway.
I will always think the show should have ended with season 5.
Additionally, Eric from True Blood who finally confronted his true feelings for Sookie. That Viking could only face his feelings fully after being put under a spell by a witch 😞
I am as we speak finishing up season 1 again for the billionth time and just being fascinated by knowing where everyone is now. It’s the most ridiculous show
The cherry on top here is that Sandoval punched Jax in the forehead, which is generally considered one of the worst spots to punch someone (for the puncher) because human foreheads are hard AF, and did more damage to himself than Jax
The best bit was Edith - after all the shit Mary pulled, deliberately ruining Edith's life - still attempting to hold her tongue a bit. Then Mary keeps needling her, prompting this outburst. Like Mary you completely brought this on yourself girl don't act shocked lmao
Man dies in the first episode after chokingly taking the virginity of the heiress. Many main characters goes to war and get severely hurt. Severely babies out of wedlock. Rape. Murder. Death of several main characters. Blackmail. Infidelity. While not every episode was all action I don't think you can say that nothing ever happened :p
Yeah, if anything the show cycling between mundane banter and extreme events at the top of a hat is what made it the rollercoaster that it is lol. You didn’t even mention Edith’s fiancee getting clubbed to death by the precursors of the Nazis off-screen. Brutal (Edith really couldn’t catch a break).
And sometimes the surprises were really nasty on-screen, too. Sybil’s death was so sudden and horrible and caught me completely off guard. Only time I was absolutely sobbing while watching oof
I’m watching the series for the first time from the beginning. Did it backwards, saw the movie and AJLT first. Oh my gosh… the truly ruined her. I feel like they had to do that otherwise it would highlight how problematic Carrie would’ve likely become. She was truly unlikable in both series.
From what ive read, it was at the actress’ urging that they changed Miranda so much. A lot of her storyline comes from the actress’ own life. But in order to do that, they had to let Miranda make weird decisions and act even weirder. Still feel bad for Steve, who couldve just stayed with that nice gf he had
Mad Men has so many good ones, but this one takes it for me.
Joan’s “you’re not a good man. You never have been, and you know what I’m talking about” to fuckass Greg is also peak.

That "you know what I'm talking about" was so good, probably my favorite scene in the whole show. She ignored that he raped her two seasons back, got married and never got back to this until then. But she remembered. The reveal that they didn't mention this before, despite all the arguments, and the way she delivered it, scolding him like he was a schoolboy - everything was perfect.
I was a teenager working at McDonald's when this aired and one of my most vivid memories is gleefully yelling back and forth with my friend about the scene where Jess calls her out while we worked the drive thru the next day. Just "RORY WE USED TO MAKE FUN OF GUYS LIKE THIS" between cars reveling in the catharsis of it all lmao. Everyone thought we'd lost our minds but man I'd never had a shift go by that fast at that fuckass job, it felt great.
I commented about Claudia outsmarting Lestat at the end of Season 1, but this argument was truly epic. Louis called Armand the softest, beigest pillow, lol!
Also, when Louis tossed Armand into the wall at the end of Season 2...
She wants a divorce, he said he'd only divorce her if she got down on her knees and begged him to leave, thinking she'd never debase herself like that. She does so without even hesitating because she's so done.
It was such a masterclass in both writing and acting that Claire kneeling to beg was actually a power move. "I didn't think you'd kneel in that dress..."
I watched The Sopranos for the first time during covid, and the acting was so good that halfway through this scene I paused it and had to google to make sure they both got Emmy’s that year
That was such a great finale too. And Tony would’ve gotten away with the cheating at that point in the show if he had never beaten up Irina’s ex-boyfriend Ronnie Zellman and slept with her cousin Svetlana.
Zuko confronting Ozai on the Day of the Black Sun is probably my favourite moment in the show. Him calling out Ozai and how terrible of a father he is and how much he failed and he is no longer letting that hold Zuko back. I love it. I tried to channel that energy when i confronted my dad about his shit.
I was a kid when it came out and I remember waiting an agonizing amount of time for the finale. It sounds silly but I think it might be my favorite series resolution ever
And the other four stuck in the bedroom - despite how emotional that episode is, it has some major laughs in it too. Say what you like, that show had some top talent in it, both in the cast and in the writers' room.
Lilly trying to say to Marshall how selfish he's been when he finally confronts her on how she fucked out of their relationship to "find herself" in San Fransisco.
IRL I’m never a fan of fights where one person shares how they feel about something and the other responds with ”oh well you did this shit a year ago”, but yes, this one was well needed and well deserved
Sophia Bush PERFECTED that character. One of the most well rounded and compelling portrayals of a teenage girl and it was all down to her. Brooke Davies deserved the BEST.

Ruth and Debbie’s argument in the hospital when Ruth breaks her leg. The writing and acting is absolutely sublime and feels like everything the two characters had been leading up to for the first two seasons. I miss you, GLOW.
When Carrie finally let’s Big have it outside her brownstone. “You and I…NOTHING! You cannot do this to me again!” OMG, the number of times I’ve watched that scene. She, and the audience, NEEDED that.
I was going to say, many of my favorite confrontations in television history were in Breaking Bad. Whether between Walter and Jesse, Walter and Skyler, Hank and a number of people, even Walter Jr. between both Walter and Skyler. The acting in that show's phenomenal.
I'm not sure why Miranda was suddenly pro-Big at the end of the series. Petrovsky was the greater of two evils, but not much greater an evil. I also think it was bullshirt that Miranda caught heat when her little hissy fit about marriage caused Big to play runaway groom. He was always one foot out of that relationship, and she could have saved us sitting through that first crappy movie if Carrie could take off those rose colored glasses and see that relationship for what it was.
maybe a bit of a deeper cut, and complicated by the facts that a) Crozier was in the right here about needing to make an escape plan and b) some of Sir John’s comments are colored a bit by the anti-Irish sentiment of the day, but damn does Sir John rip him to shreds in ep3 of The Terror, all while Crozier stands there just seething:

You complain in the safety of speculation, you claim foresight in disasters that never happen, and you are weak in your vices because your rank affords you privacy and deference. In degrassi the next generation holly j and Anya are best friends but holly j consistently treats her terribly. When Anya finally stands up to her holly j actually has this really poignant line about the dynamic of their friendship.
Idk about “long awaited,” but one you definitely knew was coming: Ted saying fuck you to his mom in Ted Lasso definitely healed some part of my own childhood trauma.
Any Carrie/Miranda confrontation. I always felt they were the most honest with each-other. Like when Miranda and Carrie argue about Paris. “Fine! I don’t like him!” “Then don’t you go to Paris with him!”
edith fucked up ROYALLY in season 1 and spent 5 seasons growing and changing as a person and mary didn't grow up literally at all until the very, very end. that being said i am glad to see in the movies they addressed their relationship and grew the sisters closer together. after all the losses they both shared together and apart, i was grateful for the reconciliation of sorts.
Glee when Will finds out his wife was faking her pregnancy the whole time! Yeah he was emotionally cheating on her and there was jealousy from Pillsbery it was all a mess… ugh it was such a intense moment for my younger self
