It looks like she was the alternate & subbed in for the bronze medal match (probably bc of the broken back!). I don't remember if Olympics rules state you have to actually fence in order to earn the medal in team events, but if so, fencing teams with a healthy lead will sometimes sub in an alternate who's not expected to perform as well so they can medal or gain experience. Regardless, the US dominated women's sabre for many many years, so even making the team is a huge accomplishment.
