DISCUSSION Rosie O’Donnell: “Those are our bombs that Israel is dropping in Gaza. The Pink thing with Macklemore, color me shocked... I don’t understand why someone saying we should not have genocide in the world anywhere is offensive to anyone. Maybe that’s just me.”

Rosie O’Donnell should have had the career and platform that Ellen did for as long as she did.

I remember Rosie's talk show, she was good at it

Her interviews with Gillian Anderson are so funny

I REALLY loved her show. She always made me laugh, as a kid I’d always watch it with my grandma and we’d just laugh and laugh.

I didn't watch her show much (talk shows weren't interesting to me when I was a child) but I loved her character in Harriet the Spy 🥲

17

u/Stiles15 18h ago

But did you have the book of jokes that the kids would come on and say??

3

u/ladyseymour 14h ago

I had this!! I loved it! I would pull it out every time we had a guest over

Rosie's show was delightful. It was a genuine joy to watch, and she was so much fun as an interviewer -- smart, informed, compassionate, and very funny.

I LOVED watching her interviews recently with Hayden pantierre and Britney Spears. She was SO gentle and calming with young stars

Also shout out to the kids movie Harriet the spy her and Michelle tractenberg r.i.p star in it and I have such fond memories of that movie

As a kid I didn't "get" her so when she stopped being popular I didn't really notice or care. As an adult I feel like she was almost ahead of her time. I feel like Millennials really like her now

She’s absolutely lovely, and as a kid growing up in the 2000s I always heard people trashing her for her looks and I’m so grossed out about that

Her talk show was massive and would have been on the air longer if she hadn't left to focus on her kids. They offered her a crazy amount of money to stay too but she didn't want to.

47

u/festivus4allofus 20h ago

Yeah it really was something she herself chose, I think she declined crazy amounts of money too. I think because ellen became so big ppl tend to forget how popular the rosie o'donnell show was, or are a bit too young to remember

16

u/JenningsWigService secretly gay and the son of fidel castro 20h ago

I think they're too young. I also think that on top of the focus on her kids, there was probably a connection between Rosie not enjoying being in the closet on her show (that fake crush on Tom Cruise must have been exhausting) and her decision to leave. She came out either near the end of the show or right after it ended.

18

u/callingallwaves 18h ago

It wasn't fake! She thought he was in fact a cutie patootie, she just wanted him to mow her lawn and give her lemonade instead of bone him!

13

u/almondmilklattehag 18h ago

She didn’t want it. They offered her crazy money. She had enough.

I was just thinking yesterday how Ellen shilled trips to Dubai as some of the big prizes on her show

-4

u/lemmegetadab 2h ago

She doesn’t have the charisma and I’m not an Ellen fan whatsoever.

She used to be my uncle's neighbor, she's always been cool as fuck apparently ❤️

I loved her on a recent episode of Amy Poehlers podcast

I have so much respect for Rosie. She left the country to protect her children, and then she decided to come back and raise her voice. I feel so much solidarity with her and she makes me proud of what a real American is or rather should aspire to be.

u/Lucky_Possession6102 feeding cocaine to raccoons 21h ago

I kind of bought into the whole bullshit around hating her from memes and that one South Park episode when I was a stupid teen. But based off what I've seen and heard from her. she seems very based, and a genuinely nice person. The internet in the late 2000s and early 2010s really did rot my brain.

212

u/TemporaryElk5202 21h ago

She was loud, confident, and obese and unabashedly a lesbian. That was enough to attract a lot of hate

17

u/PetitDayjayneigh 17h ago

Obese? I think she was just a larger woman.

4

u/JooseTheGuice 11h ago

Yeah, what the fuck is that comment? "Obese" fuck outta here with thay language...

14

u/Frostwick1 16h ago

From the loud, confident people who always preach being unabashedly yourself. Of course.

8

u/FoolishGoulish 3h ago

I don't care how much Southpark has turned it around. I used to be a fan until I realized that their cynical take on everything was maybe not causing but definitely supporting gamergate, people complaining about "identity politics" and the overall denigration of empathy and passion for pretty much anything.

1

u/HughJassJae 5h ago

As an Asian kid, I hated her for this performance. I still haven't forgotten.

171

u/valcraft 21h ago

I'll never understand the argument that Israel is not committing genocide. Like we have fucking eyes, we've all seen the footage out of Gaza.

Plus Israel isn't really hiding it. It's weird as fuck seeing Americans defend them, like baby, you don't even go there!

Is anyone really shocked that P¡nk is trash?

190

u/javachik i ain’t reading all that, free palestine 21h ago

Sigh. Yes. I am. I have loved her music for a long time and saw her in concert in Copenhagen a couple of years ago. Up until the last couple of weeks, been really wanting to see her again.

I will say that I was not tied into the Brit/Xtina/Pink zeitgeist when it was happening as I was not into music videos or the inter-dynamics of young rich pop stars at the time. So I was unaware of what a lot of people are discussing now in terms of her career. I just knew her being funny in interviews, having a powerful voice, and, in terms of appealing to ME, much more appealing songs than her “rivals.” I saw her sing at the DNC, loved how her socials usually showed a loving family, etc.

I doubt I’m the only person WILDLY and WHOLLY disappointed and upset by P!NK’s comments on the obliteration of an entire people.

66

u/Ladyhawkeiii 21h ago

You’re not. Same here. I loved her music and saw her in concert twice. Like you, I didn’t really watch her videos all that much. I’m truly, utterly disappointed to find out she supports what’s going on in Gaza. Don’t murders children shouldn’t be a controversial statement for anyone.

8

u/blking 11h ago

I was pretty neutral in her music. It’s fun, but nothing I would seek out. I did like a lot of things she said about feminism and she seemed cool in interviews. I’m surprised and disappointed that this is her stance.

36

u/redelectro7 just want to share a thought here because I can 21h ago

I genuinely was. Looking it up after I shouldn't have been, I obviously didn't pay enough attention.

11

u/EasyBakeCoven777 19h ago

Kind of? She’s been in the periphery for me forever but I was recently impressed by her talent when she hosted the Tony Awards. What a disappointment she’s turned out to be.

12

u/Luda0915 21h ago

Nope, absolutely not surprised. For anyone who made it past her releasing the song Stupid Girls twenty years ago without at least side-eyeing her, with peace and love: You need to examine how much internalized misogyny you're carrying around with you.

4

u/babywitch1980 13h ago

Yeah, that video and song did it for me. I really enjoyed her debut album, but as soon as that song/video came out I stopped liking her

4

u/RefrigeratorOk9413 18h ago

No, I've always hated her music.

86

u/red-cherrie 21h ago

I feel so bad for Rosie, especially with the President of the United States constantly mocking her. She’s strong asf, because honestly, I don’t know what I would do if I were in her position.

77

u/kibbean 21h ago

i missed u mother rosie

39

u/Humble-Particular978 21h ago

No that's not just you Rosie. A majority of the world is with you on this.

The oligarchs arent. And they might have influence, and be loud, and use their power to suppress... but history will remember anyone speaking up against the horrendous crimes committed by the genocidal apartheid state.

24

u/TrixieMuttel 21h ago

I’m so glad she came out to say something because I had the distinct recollection that they were friends or friendly (maybe it was just a Hollywood thing). I hope more celebrities come out to say this more!

her character was my favorite on Now & Then. I love that movie. she's a good one!

Killing and terrorizing children is the worst of humanity

17

u/Nerd-Dad-2779 21h ago

My mom loved her and got Shat on by her boyfriend and our family for liking her. Never got it until I was older, she’s always been outspokenly empathetic. And she’s funny as hell.

people thought I was crazy for having a vintage Rosie Barbie doll a few years ago! Rosie is my lifelong idol 🫶

Based Rosie

17

I had the good fortune to meet her once, as she was coming out of some Broadway show. She was a real sweetie pie. This was back before she even had her talk show! I’m always Team Rosie.

It's not just you, Rosie 🤎

u/Fay-control 21h ago

Soon, they’ll be asking us to submit a written request for permission to talk about Israel (or not talk).

I don't think these people have ever heard of the Streisand effect. The more you try to censor something, the more people will want to talk about it and the more curious they’ll be about the subject.

7

u/Clean_Affect_6415 21h ago

Just like her koosh ball slingshot days on her talk show—this was right on target! 🎯

8

u/TheRealToastGhost 21h ago

She was my favorite Barbie doll

I love Rosie… as a kid I always wanted her to be my fairy god mother or something.

I’ve developed such a crush on her!

3

u/reddollardays 20h ago

If you didn’t already love Rosie, go listen to her on Amy Poehler’s Good Hang podcast and you will adore her.

2

u/SprayIll9039 20h ago

I sincerely don't understand why anyone would still support Israel at this point.

2

u/Fiigwort 19h ago

I'm always confused about why there's SO MUCH backlash to people saying that 'genocide=bad', I can vaguely get politicians being bffs with that one country (though how it seems to cross all political lines in almost every western country is baffling to me).
But having normal-ass celebrities, with no connections to the country, becoming WILDLY defensive over it's right to do whatever it wants to anyone around them, no matter how reasonable the stance is ('hey, maybe don't murder people?') is so confusing. What does Pink have to do with that situation? Why is she so vehemently defensive, to the point that it might actually tank her career? I can't fathom genuinely thinking it's ok, so where is the benefit?

2

u/Peppermeowington 17h ago

Eff yeah Rosie. I was a huge fan of VH1 Standup Spotlight & she was my favorite host. Respect.

Just saw an old clip of Rosie talking 9/11 conspiracy theories with Joe Rogan. I appreciate that she’s anti-genocide, anti-trump, anti-Zionism, etc, but maybe we gotta cool it on the Rosie glazing.

1

u/DNAtimebomb 17h ago

Rosie was amy poehler and it delighted me. Id forgotten how cool she is.

What an absolute queen. 👑

1

u/NNM_01 7h ago

Exactly. There’s nothing offensive about saying “stop genocide” or “screw genociders and genocide supporters” unless someone is a genocider/genocide supporter. Simple as that.

1

u/waitingOnMyletter 7h ago

Not to minimize the failures of our defense department but I’m not sure the bombing in Gaza belong side by side with pop culture drama. They aren’t even close to comparable.

One is a social fopaux according to whoever the mob hates today for some dumb new reason and the other is a war crime.

Sorry but idgaf about why pink and Ed Sheeran have not done the “right thing” or Macklemore is no longer pc blessed. The strongest non-nuclear bomb ever dropped hit an elementary school in Iran in the same year that the dissidently poor have had a city leveled and invaded “because they attacked us first” in the on going 2000 year war.

Those two topics are not sitting next to each other.

-4

She's right here but I'll never understand why anyone ever listens to a word she say. She's such an untalented, vile person

-18

u/Colon_Oscopy_74 21h ago

Dear Rosie, no disrepect to you, I value your timeless contribution to our glory days of telling a vision, having said that, maybe "pink thing and said statement" isn't the problem to global offensive, rather perhaps "OUR BOMBS" IS.
