STAN / ANTI SHIELD Pink playing coy over questions of her race early in her career, saying, “They totally think I’m mixed! I’m like, whatever! Like, I’m a mutt we all are.”

That word, “mutt”, feels super gross in this context.

My parents’ generation has used the term “mutt” in my hearing to refer to being descended from a bunch of different European countries (all white) but it’s like, profoundly vile to imply that mixed race people are somehow less than “purebred” like WHAT

116

u/sfocolleen 12h ago

It’s me, I’m your parents generation, I say this about myself all the time. My Latino spouse’s family was really confounded that I couldn’t state that I was just German or Irish or Hungarian or Canadian or Scottish or, well you get the point. Too many countries to name.

31

u/Flagermusmanden 9h ago

This has always confused me about America. Like, I will always hear Americans say that they are Italian, Dutch or Irish etc. But, isn't it basically statistically impossible for an American to be only one thing?

18

u/AtriCrossing Friends with Ms. Rachel 3h ago

Not really. How recently a person's ancestors moved (or were moved) from another country varies from person to person. A lot of the time when people move to a the US, they end up in communities with other people who have similar ethnic backgrounds. This can be by design, moving somewhere where other people are known to speak your language, practice your religion, etc. - it can also be about privilege, access to services, and where job opportunities and housing can be found at a given time.

Go to any major American city and you'll find at least one neighbourhood named (or nicknamed) for an ethnic group who live there, if not many. If you are living and working near people, there are more chances to fall in love and have kids. You also have to consider the legal impact of racism in the US and actual historical (but in living memory) laws against people of different "races" getting married.

Some communities are more insular than others. Think of the Amish, for example. A lot of them are probably genuinely just Dutch-American.

All this to say, I wouldn't meet someone and assume that have only one ethnic identity, but it's not as rare or unlikely as you may perceive to be.

u/Fragrant-Tradition-2 17h ago

I feel like Pink was very Black-coded, or was marketed to be or attempted to be, in the early 2000s.

1.1k

u/AugustIzFalling 16h ago

It was her first album specifically. Can't Take Me Home. She blamed LA Reid for it but never acknowledged her participation or the nature of what she was portraying.

501

u/scrapsforfourvel 16h ago

According to that article, her mom was originally shopping her around with two other girls as a trio of white R&B singers.

326

u/r3volver_Oshawott 15h ago

This is correct, she was in a girl group that died quick, then Babyface and a handful of others got their mitts on her and started marketing her very specifically as a white R&B artist like it was some kind of fun niche

208

u/AugustIzFalling 14h ago

"L.A. told me/you'll be a pop star/all you have to change/is everything you are." Oh it was all L.A. Reid's idea? 🧐

279

u/SuperFrylock 12h ago

Notice the hypocrisy. Pink presents herself as a victim of the industry. She was forced to change her identity to become a star. That's sad, right? But when it comes to other stars like Britney Spears or Jessica Simpson, Pink doesn't consider if they were forced or coerced into similar positions. Nope, they are STUPID GIRLS.

29

u/fiercelyambivalent 9h ago

Pink was the original NLOG. We loved her for being “real” and didn’t realize how badly she preyed on our insecurities with that.

she really tried to make it out like she was some mousy blonde LA Reid plucked out from behind the register at a Joann Fabrics and slapped some doorknockers on. I'm no LA Reid apologist, but be fucking forreal, lady.

also, the only silver lining to her existence is the song "most girls" off her debut album, so--

Of course, I can't speak for Pink, but that "marketed to be" is probably so very true for a number of celebrities. We've certainly her enough from them about what studios and production companies demand & push... It sounds like few have very much agency at all in how the Studio markets them.

Lol, so the Vibe article from 2000 that said that she grew up in a "racially diverse neighborhood in North Philadelphia" wasn't accurate either?

As someone who isn't from the area, the article's description just makes it sound to me like she grew up in an area similar to the one described in the Fresh Prince theme song

137

That's...actually hilarious, a lot of her lyrics on Misundastood (or however it's spelled I haven't listened to it in 20 years) imply that she was like from the wrong side of the tracks, growing up in big bad Philadelphia

101

u/pennoya_neutral 15h ago edited 15h ago

I looked it up. On that album, she had a song about moving to California about how she was getting out of the ghetto of Philadelphia. She said:

I'm like a rabbit on the run
Philadelphia freedom
Well it's not like you have heard, no, no, no
This city of brotherly love is full of pain and hurt

I'm going to California
To find my pot of gold

Corruption on every corner
Hustlers selling sweets
Baby is home crying
While her mom is on the streets
Everybody's dying
Have you heard the news today?
A woman in north Phili is mourning
A bullet took another son away

I'm going to California
There's a better life for me

So many of these pop artists were doing this in the 90s. We look back and think it was weird now, but like Justin Timberlake, Nick Carter, Christina, etc. did this shit all the time and everyone loved them. You were honestly the weird one if you thought this shit was lame. I know because I was one of the metal kids.

144

u/AroundTheBlockNBack 16h ago

Britney was the only one at the time that didn’t put on a blaccent or market herself as urban.

72

u/tequilasauer 16h ago

Yeah and it was especially in contrast to "X-tina" whose voice went from like sweetheart Mickey Mouse Club alum (like Brit) to like Chicago South Side in the span of a year and a half.

Or of course Justin. We laugh at Michelle Williams impression of him now, but this guy was the king of TRL in 1998.

33

u/Asleep_Assistant_468 I never said that. Paris is my friend. 16h ago

Michelle Williams reading as Britney impersonating (her assistant?) impersonating JT. Michelle should have gotten a Grammy for that!

25

u/tequilasauer 15h ago

"Aw yeah, fo shizz fo shizz!"

In my head cannon, Michelle saw this part and like practiced for several days getting this just right. She knew exactly what she was doing with this impression. There's just a little hint of snark to it.

"In between shoplifting and raving, she was experimenting with music and adopted the stage name Pink, the origins of which vary from a nod to Mr. Pink from Reservoir Dogs to a reference to her vagina which, she told Playboy in 2002, dawned on her when she relented to her friend’s pleas to know what a white girl’s vagina looks like (pink, like every other vagina). After that, Moore says that she, the only white girl in her friend group, was dubbed Pink."

I was pretty young when she debuted and thought she was a really light skinned biracial. It pissed me off when I found out she blackfished us but everyone simply shrugged it off cause she knows how to twirl on some ropes and shit.

Pink would say, “I’m not white, I’m pink, because everyone’s pink on the inside.”

76

u/brellowman2 16h ago

The irony of her bringing up what Macklemore did in 2014 but being radio silent whenever she's confronted with the blackface that gave her her career.

42

u/theserthefables 14h ago

I think blackfishing is more accurate here than blackface, she never deliberately made her skin darker to appear Black (afaik). instead it was her voice, her accent & persona, her first album being R & B, etc.

you're right though, she very much is a hypocrite. that whole instagram post was ridiculous & an attempt to deflect the criticism.

In her own words, "But sometimes it be's like that"

Using an animal to describe someone of mixed race is nasty.

I am so truly, deeply, genuinely tired of people taking my culture on and off at will like a fucking cheap ass Chanel bag.

I hated her back in the day. She was transparent AF in her chameleon money grab. Then I read some shit about how she was manipulated and I felt kinda bad for her. Then she said some good shit about raising daughters and I thought, ok, she’s grown up into a decent person. NOPE. Brakes. Back the fuck up. She is who I thought she was.

u/pandahotchocolate 16h ago

She’s always been a loser fr

People clocking her shit and dragging it all up after so many years is the only reason for that weird ass statement she just released.

Fuck St!nk

17

u/Clairvoient_Carl 16h ago

Girl, no one thought you were black.

16

u/ThatSICILIANThing 15h ago

Genuinely, I’ve never understood how anyone was fooled or legitimately thought she was black fishing. She has ALWAYS come off like a standard run of the mill lower middle class white girl that maybe went to school with a lot of black people and just started talking like them. We’ve all known at least one Pink.

12

u/MelonLayo 17h ago

Macklemore said, "peace and love for all" and she said "that scawed me uwu." Fuck this racist ass bitch.

14

u/bluntlordious 15h ago

The amount of people that dont realize that pink was a b team player at best who got brought up from the minors because 'punk' was trending and she could nail that aesthetic and make money for the industry

13

u/Mediocre_Tomatillo85 13h ago

She used to say she's not white or black she's pink. Funny how you don't hear that BS anymore.

13

u/TheVonSolo 16h ago

She should just stick to her trapeze act to appeal to millennial wine mums or something
