Lupita in the background living!

u/Somnambulist815 12h ago

I seriously thought it was a really tone deaf skit up until Smith broke FCC censorship. Even then, I was only half sure it was real.

46

u/Wafflesxbutter 11h ago

Me too! I was watching with my mouth open and I could not figure out if it was real! I was watching with my sisters and we were all confused.

u/THE_Visionary88 3h ago

As someone who has watched WWE since I was a kid, I was almost certain it wasn’t real. Shame on me lol.

12

u/NewYorker15 2h ago

I thought it was scripted pretty much the whole time, Lupitas reactions made me realize!

Chris Rock should have gotten slapped, just like maybe at the after party. Nobody talks about how weird Chris Rock has been towards Jada since the 90s. He was making weird ass jokes about her way back on his HBO show. It wasn't just a one off joke. But you know, it's easier to blame Jada because they had an open relationship.

Yeah afterwards is fair, I felt bad for Questlove and his collaborators who won the documentary award after him having to accept their award in the most awkward moment in award show history.

I dunno, hot take I guess but I don't think we should use violence against people we disagree with

u/lanicorain 4h ago

It was a slap not white phosporus lmao. Sometimes you say something stupid and get slapped for it, such is life.

2

u/VKTGC 24m ago

white phosphorus is killing me how do u even think of that 🤣

2

u/animedeathspiral 24m ago

Yeah, but you also don't get slapped for a milquetoast gi Jane joke.

15

u/dtwhitecp 6h ago

no but you see he made weird ass jokes

48

u/Vlodivostonks 7h ago

A dude made an awkward joke and another dude went on stage and slapped him.

So who is at fault? Obviously the woman the joke was about

6

u/sonnytron 3h ago

The issue is Will literally laughed at the joke and was going along with it until Jada got mad and then he changed gears like some unstable psycho. It’s Chris fucking Rock. You know he’s gonna be there and it’s not like he surprised everyone like the fucking Undertaker ambushing Steve Austin during the Intercontinental title match. Will went from “AHAHAHAHA clapping and slapping knees” to 🤔 🤨😳🤬 to “KEEP MY WIFE’s NAME OUT YER FUCKING MOUTH!”

2

u/Time_Jump8047 5h ago

What a bizarre take

2

u/dtwhitecp 6h ago

I don't think anyone blamed Jada at any point for this particular event

1

u/Mindless_Director955 1h ago

they weren’t even together at that point 😭

I watched this happen live and it was surreal. At first I thought it was a strange bit, and the audience there chuckled nervously not knowing if it was a bit, but once Will Smith sat back down and started yelling curses, it became obvious this was real. And then online everyone started sharing the uncensored overseas broadcast clip. And then the next presenter was fuckass Diddy, of all people, who tried to act as statesman smoothing things over. It was such a time.

52

u/peasantry94 8h ago

That's what people who only saw the clip don't fully appreciate. The crippling awkwardness of the rest of the night. Nobody could focus on anything else, especially knowing that he was pretty much guaranteed to win Best Actor and give a speech. It's one of the most surreal nights of live television I've ever seen.

16

u/AABBBAABAABA 4h ago

And then the gave him a fucking award, lol

It’s crazy how fast the slap is and how accurately it connects. Will Smith is an asshole for doing this for sure, but he had like a 1/50 chance of the slap connecting in any kind of a meaningful way and he STILL absolutely nailed it.

23

u/staebles 9h ago

Man can slap, mhm, yes he can.

21

u/Starkcasm 4h ago

It's not THAT hard to land a slap

4

u/lxpnh98_2 1h ago

Especially when the other person isn't expecting it. And of all the situations in which a person is not expecting to be slapped, "while hosting the Oscars on national television" has got to rank pretty high on the list.

4

u/sCREAMINGcAMMELcASE 9h ago

Chris Rock had been bullying his wife since the 90s. The reaction is understandable.

It’s weird how that the bullying is essentially condoned by the academy. But Smith is on a ban list of 5 others, 4 of which being rapists.

5 the 5th loaned out a few screeners.

u/TheWholeOfTheAss 9h ago

But… is he the asshole? If some random dude pointed to your bald wife and said, “GI Jane,” you’d be pissed too, right?

40

u/onelostmind97 9h ago

Will laughed, the turned and saw his wife's face. Also, no. I would hate if my husband reacted like that, in front of idk millions? Be an adult.

HE COULD HAVE KILLED HIM!!

/s if needed

u/Bak0ffWarchild_srsly 9h ago

/s if needed

Doesn't help nor hurt. Comment's equally confusing either way...

I legit don't know if you're talking about the slap itself, or one of the men just being capable of killing the other in general, etc... None of it rly scans tbh.

42

u/BlackWunWun 8h ago

There was some director who tweeted after the slap "he could've killed him!" And he was being 100% serious. Im pretty sure thats what the comment was referencing

7

u/jonsnowme shiv roy apologist 4h ago

Judd Apatow tweet about the incident.

92

u/Annanon1 11h ago

And people were so crazy about. I thought it was funny af

27

u/souryoungthing 9h ago

Lupita is all of us lol

17

u/EbmocwenHsimah Find me at Whole Foods, bitch, I don't care 4h ago

I think us in Australia were one of the only countries who got that moment live and uncensored. Seeing that happen live, at an Oscars party with friends we held at uni was the second greatest thing we saw that day, we knew immediately that this wasn't scripted, we could see the air just get sucked out of the room.

The first greatest thing was the growing realisation of "fuck, wouldn't it be funny if Will Smith then won Best Actor", which he did twenty minutes later. We were crying tears of laughter, I've never seen what should be a career-high win feel like an absolutely agonising loss.

18

u/EllipticPeach 8h ago

I can’t believe he wasn’t asked to leave

9

u/Verucaschmaltzzz high body count hair 8h ago

Is that Lupita Nyongo? Lol, I never noticed this.

10

u/figuringthingsout__ 7h ago

I remember watching this live at a bar. Everyone kind of froze, then we immediately went to our phones to make sure that it wasn't some kind of weird prank.

6

u/_crystallil_ 3h ago

I just wish the reactions were as strong as this to Adrien Brody forcing a kiss on Halle Berry, or Isaac Mizrahi grabbing Scarlett Johannson’s breast…. but whatever I guess “he could have killed him” as a wildly inappropriate slap between contemporaries and collaborators that knew a woman he’d known for years was struggling with alopecia and chose low hanging fruit.

downvote all you want, nuance. none of it is okay.
