Anderson Cooper borrowed a friend's camera and forged a press pass and got into Myanmar to cover student protests in the 90s. He also went to Rwanda, Somalia, etc. back then.

He was legit before 2000 even rolled around.

There is a big difference between "I never heard of him before then" and "he actually became a good journalist"
