SPORTS SECTION Belgian defender Thomas Meunier on the Balogun case: “I think this event was a reflection of the whole World Cup — led by capitalism, entertainment, money. This World Cup was the dark side of traditional football.” “The problem is that football was not the first priority at World Cup 2026.”

The treatment of the Iranian team was reprehensible. A complete stain on this World Cup.

Democrats were completely silent about it by the way, in case anyone thinks it’s just a Republican thing to be a reprehensible piece of shit to other people on this planet

The democrat leadership are too busy maligning the left flank of their own party. Or anyone who doesn’t fall in line with their corporate centre right finder assigned agenda. They don’t have the time to actually stand up for anything, outside or sending a ‘strongly worded letter’ on occasion.

And the Somali referee who wasn't allowed to enter the country

OK, as bad as this one was are we just going to forget about the atrocities in south africa and Qatar, where thousands of workers died, poor communities displaced and bribery in fifa. Fifa sucks no doubt, but lets not pretend it just started this year or that this event is an outlier.

Can't wait for euros, I think they are doing a much better job.

Besides the blatant whataboutism, putting South Africa on the same level as Qatar is wild.

or the US, the only one to ban a referee and refuse to host another nation

What atrocities in South Africa?

Wage theft, rigged construction bidding, fifa bribery scandal, displacement of vulnerable locals. Not on the same level of Qatar by any means but still not great.

What is the point of this red herring? He’s not talking about either of those tournaments, he’s talking this this one - can we focus?

When we start talking about everything, we end up talking about nothing.

This is what bothers me too. Making THIS world cup into somehow the bad one than other ones just reeks of "America bad"-ism. At the very least, we have corruption scandals going back as far as the early 00s.

Meunier just signed for my team this Summer and every interview I’ve read from him he seems an incredibly intelligent thoughtful man

Let's not just restrict it to WC2026. Worldwide football has Ben all about dark money for decades.

It's turned into sports-washing for oil money.

Don't forget all the slave labor and deaths involved in the Qatar world cup in 2022.

Don't forget all of the premier league teams owned by oil oligarchs, the entire Saudi league trying to clean up their country's image.

maybe bringing the initial game of WC2030 to
one of the most traditional stadiums honoring Uruguay being the first hosts in 1930 will help us reverse course a little… but not while Infantino is in charge
