Love your Doggo…!
Her name was Pepper,
Our Pepper…
In the Mountains on her last day,
She graced the landscape with vitality and her spirits
Ever curious and mischievous
Her presence is forever etched on our hearts…

There’s something about senior pets that I love. I think it’s because to get to a certain age you know they must have been truly loved and cared for during their lives.

Jack Russell’s are very cheeky.  The ones I knew in the UK were happiest tearing up mice and rats around the barn.

22

u/Disastrous_Store_634 23h ago

Total chaos goblins, but impossible not to love.

u/craftyhall2 15h ago

The first Jack Russell I ever met was a 3-legger in a pub in (I think… it was decades ago) Bournemouth. I fell in love. A bazillion years later, I have a rescue JRT/Pug mix hahaaa. She’s her own thing, but catches rats very efficiently

Really? Of all the places you chose here to cut them onions 😭😭😭

It's beautiful seeing 100% unconditional love flowing both ways 🥰❤️

u/Iamthegreenheather 22h ago

My sweet girl will be 16 in a few weeks. I need her to last at least another 16. 😭

19

u/whisar09 20h ago

Gosh I miss seeing a little white face like that every day 🥰 my baby made it to age 16 this summer and I had to let her go. Hardest thing I ever did.

7

u/Prickled-Naty 19h ago

Hope you’re grieving/grieved properly. I’m sure your baby knew just how much you loved them🫂❤️

This past February I had to put my dog (Baby) down too — 16 years old as well. It was so hard but I knew it was his time to go.

I’m so grateful we both got 16 years with our babies🐶❤️

4

u/whisar09 18h ago

Thank you so much ❤️‍🩹 I did grieve, and am still grieving. The first two weeks were hell, but now almost two months later I'm getting to the point where I can think about her and smile and be grateful for all the time we had together.

I'm so sorry you lost your Baby too. We loved them enough to take the pain for them. I think they know that.

3

u/Prickled-Naty 16h ago

I’m very glad to hear you’re doing better. Yeah there comes a time where you can remember all the good memories and funny little moments and actually laugh and smile. And yes believe me, they definitely did know how much we loved them. Take it easy—your baby was very loved ❤️🙏🏼

u/Muffinlette 21h ago

We have a soon to be 15 year old Corgi and he has been there for every major part of my life. He was there when I was dating my now husband, first house, first kid. He's a little shit but he's great. He even went "viral" on Reddit once when I posted a YouTube video of him. People made little gifs and edited pictures it was so fun. I remember my dad telling everyone he met about the video in our small town🤣. He has brought so much joy into our life and I will miss him tremendously when "that day" comes. Until then I will treasure every day we have with him ❤️ love him so much.

Have a senior dog that just started being a "senior dog". What advice do you or others have to help us get from a dog being active to this point of walking her in strollers? It feels like a big jump from where she is now (3 legs are still carrying her, but she doesn't seem to mind) to that kind of life? When do you stop throwing balls? when do the walks get to wheelchairs or strollers?

1

u/Muffinlette 11h ago

My dog has definitely slowed down but thankfully he has always been very big into playing. You will learn what their limits are and you will see the limit will be lower or higher at random times. Im not sure about your dog but sometimes mine will have bursts of energy and go a little too hard. Or as he gets tired he fumbles more and is more likely to hurt himself. We switched it up and will play in spurts. Play a little then tell him to get water or wait 5-10mins and let the adrenaline wear off so we can see if he is limpy or wore out.

When it comes to play it's more about just having them engaged in some kind of activity. If they are barking or moving around that's better than just laying around bored. We have changed our games over the years to keep him engaged and just focused on movement and fun. Like fetch, we try to roll the ball instead of throwing because he tries to jump up to get it and that hurts his little back. We will get him pumped for it by moving the ball in our hand on the ground and trying to make him guess when we will roll it. We also got a noise making ball toy he loves to just roll around and yell at it. We also play "blanket monster" and will move our hards under the blanket and he will dig for them. We also have more puzzle toys now so he can hBe things to do. Any movement is good :)

All in all just keep things interesting and fun! I feel any walks you should have a back up method just in case they get wore out (Having a Stroller or wagon). As it gets harder for them to walk I would just think of ways to keep them involved. Going to pick up a prescription? Bring them along and use the drive-thru so they can just have a change of pace! Stepping outside to get the mail? Bring them with! It can be a short walk but it's something.

Some other advice: When he first started getting stiff we started to give him liquid glucosamine in his food and it helped but over time we noticed it wasn't working as well. We started about 2 years ago on a monthly injection called Librela. It was insane how much that helped him. The thing is you have to keep on top of it once you start. Poor guy depends on it now and you can see as soon as it starts to wear off. Don't get deadset on the shot though l, there are other medications for arthritis out there that might be better for your dog. That was the one that our vet recommended for us based on my dog and how much he hated pills.

u/silver_sofa 15h ago

Dogs are smart. They know time is short. My Chow mix is sneaking up on 14. His favorite thing is going downtown where they have orphan French fries. There’s nothing like finding cast away fast food warming in the morning sun. But he will happily pass time under the maple down at the corner doing absolutely nothing because that’s where time passes the slowest. Thirty minutes feels like half a day.

A minute lasts forever.

My JRT got homemade food.  Blind and deaf. Lived 17.5 years. Dog food is killing our pets.

Deaf and blind, but at least he still has his balls. Lot more than can be said for many other doggos.
