I would say very moral when I lost my wallet I wish someone had charged me 5 dollars and returned it to me losing a wallet is so much fucking work outside of just losing what ever cash I got in it my licence my credit card my mcp card it’s all such a hassle to replace
And then trying to go through all your automatic bill payments to replace all the forms with your new card info. When my card got stolen online I had like two different bills that went unpaid because of this
I just carry a sleeve for cards on the back of my phone. I rarely lose my phone and if I do it has gps on it to find it. Idk why more people don't do this. Plus a wallet is bad for your back in the back pocket of clothes and its uncomfortable in the front
I used to do this but I kept forgetting my cards were in my phone so I’d go frantically searching for a wallet. Now I use one of those thread wallets attached to my keys.
I lost mine in an uber and pretty sure the guy took the $60 bucks I had in there (couldnt prove it could be another passenger easily). But I could not care less because he drove back to me later to drop it off.
Randomly had some dude like 20 years ago show up at my house and return my wallet from the address on the ID. Said he didn’t know what else to do with it. Still had like $200 in cash in there. What a guy.
Hate to say it but I’m in the position where somebody could charge me like 5 fucking hundred dollars to return my wallet. I’m an immigrant so there’s stuff in my wallet that’s my lifeline to existence, I can never afford to lose my wallet ever.
Seriously, even when I was in college and I lost my wallet with my last $11 cash, I was still relieved when it turned up at the lost and found with everything but the cash. Didn't have to deal with getting a new wallet, new school id, new driver's license, etc...
I'd say in general, if the cash in your wallet is more than you can afford to lose as a finder's fee for recovering your wallet, maybe carry less cash in your wallet.
I left my bag in a late night Lyft with my car keys and a few other work things in it, this was before you could call back previous drivers about lost items. The driver saw the bag the next day, looked in it and saw where I worked, drove there, and had a coworker call me and let me know it was there. I would have had to pay like $400 to replace the keys alone. She was apologetic that she went through my stuff at first but I legit gave her $200 for going through all that trouble and saving me at least $200 even after paying her.
I drive for lyft, recently had a customer forget her wallet. She caught it before I got another ride so I got it back to her within 10 minutes. I didn't charge the lyft $20 lost item fee because it was so short and she tipped a whopping $0. That $200 probably made that persons week.
I spent about an hour chasing an Instacart customers lost dog and she also tipped me $0 lmao
She told me she wouldn’t be there to meet me for the grocery drop off because she was looking for her lost dog. When I was leaving the house I saw a husky running around, sniffing and darting around like dogs that get out usually do so I messaged her asking if it was a husky she had lost. It was and I spent almost an hour trying to wrangle the dog while it ran away from me and ducked in and out of houses.
Instacart gives you the option to tip up to 24 hours later and she did not leave a tip lol
I don’t even take no tip orders but she was batched in with a generous tipper

Like I am bringing food to your house. There is virtually no safe guard or any real vetting or way to prevent someone unhinged from doing something terrible. One lady called me a dumb bitch because I wouldn’t stop and get cigarettes for her. I’m delivering baby puffs to your home, like, really? What if I was insane and spiteful?
That sucks! That was a big part of their business model. They don't advertise so they use the cheap hot dog and the cheap rotisserie chicken to get people in the door. You have to walk past the membership desk to get the hot dog and the loss leader price on the chicken gets a huge amount of word-of-mouth advertising. The cost to get potential customers through your doors is so high that even though they lose money on those 2 items they get enough new customers from them that they actually save money overall and drive huge customer loyalty.
I'm guessing those people never lost their wallet and had to to through the pain of cancelling all their credit cards, order a new driver's license, etc. Easily worth a $20 finders fee at least.
I accidentally left my wallet at an online pickup kiosk in Walmart 2 days before Christmas. It had $1200 cash in it. I’ll never forgive the asshole who took my wallet that year, take the cash. Leave me with my shit. I know I shouldn’t have put off Christmas shopping so late but i only had the one gift to give. If you’ve had to replace everything in your wallet $5 is fucking nothing
A replacement driver's license in Canada is $40 alone, So the time and fee cost to replace it and any other ID would easily justify $100+. I would still cancel/replace any credit and debit cards, but I would pay an extra 50 or more just for the reduced anxiety & urgency.
I lost my phone and the person who found it wouldn’t pick up my calls. I texted them a $20 offer to get it back and they called me right away.
It was 15 year old girl with her father and they looked downtrodden. I wasn’t mad, because that phone was worth more to me and they looked like they needed that $20
This was mid 2000s where their was no backups and my work connects were very important to me. They could have easily took out the sim and kept my phone. There was no account lock
When you factor in the cost of the wallet, cost of the cards and cost if time, we're easily over $100 to replace. Nobody carries tons of cash anymore, so I'd venture to say that all the cash in the wallet goes to the finder for returning it unless when they look in the wallet they react surprised to the amount of cash. Feels fair.
I keep a few of my business cards in my wallet. They contain my cell phone number. I specifically make sure to keep at least one in there because one time I didn't, lost my wallet, and the dude who eventually returned it said he had a hell of a time trying to get in touch with me.

"Funny" story from years back. Oulu, Finland. A drunk man broke into a pig farm with naughty ideas. He got in, had some hanky panky with an animal there. Only got charged for drunk driving and tresspassing.

It seems like that would encourage people swiping things they claim were abandoned. I have found multiple cellphones that people have left behind and managed to get them back to their owners. Seems crazy legally I could have taken it to the police and been entitled to $100.
What if I see a stroller at the park, nobody around it, perhaps parents on on the other side of the park with their toddler, but it’s just sitting there odd the side of the walking path. Can I just take it to the police station and get paid if they want it back?
There's a difference between the morality behind following state mandate and enacting one's own perseption of equality to justify taking belongings that aren't yours.
As members of Lithuania, ideally all members of the population are aware and have agreed to the social convention of the finder being entitled to some portion of the item value. It is an unspoken agreement between the person who lost the item and the person who found the item. To some level, it is fair to assume anyone in the country has already agreed to fork up some portion of money as they continue to live in the country.
There is no reason to believe members of other countries, that are subjected to different laws and social convention, have made this unspoken agreement that is represented in legistration. There's a comparative lack of consent.
As in, the police give you that value in money? Or the person is required to give you that value in money? One is a moral incentive program for returning lost stuff, one is an immoral fine against people for losing stuff and having it found by someone else
$5 to go to a police station and file paperwork and do all that and go back home is considerably less than minimum wage. If that happened at a bar I would buy him hot dog and beer which is gonna run up $25 with him doing none of the above.

I'm in Canada, and there's only one bar I know that serves hotdogs. They only serve hotdogs, and yeah... $25 sounds about right. $15 hotdog, $7 beer, plus tax
Considering the cost of replacing a single ID card, a wallet, and all of the headaches associated with a lost wallet, $5 is the last thing I'd worry about at that point.
I may be showing my age a bit here as I know tap to pay exists on phones, but losing most methods of payment is a major pain. You can't withdraw cash either because your bank card is in your wallet as well as most people's primary ID. A lost ID replacement is $20 in my state, not including going to go get it at the MVA/DMV in the first place. It would be good practice to cancel and order CC replacements anyways, but it's better to have the option than having to mandatory call and cancel/freeze every one of them.
Losing any work badges in said wallet could also cost you depending on the work location, but regardless an issue.
I once told somoene that was mugging me "I'll gift you the money if you let me keep my wallet and cards" and I was carrying like 200 dollars because I was about to pay the mechanic, and he agreed.
It was still a lot of money for me at that time, but I remember at least keeping my phone/wallet and not having to cancel my cards.
Once lost my wallet the day I was coming back home from college. Went up to the front desk at the university's admin center and luckily they had it. Whoever gave it to them took like $50-60 dollars that I had in it but left everything else and handed it in.

I found a wallet with tons of stuff inside, like photos, credit cards, and probably some very personal things that the person who lost it would like to get back.
I know it's morally bad, but it also contained money, not much, but at that time it would cover at least essential needs for the coming days for my wife and my kid, as we were in financial difficulties due to a lost job and illness.
I took that money, but I gave the wallet to my town administration, who would give it back to its owner.
I'm not evading the fact that i took that money, everyone's in difficulty theses days, but some peoples would have just thrown the rest in a bin and call it a day, some stuff inside would have costed more than what i took, like ID card, crédit cards and driving licence.
I didn't wanted for that person to loose more than a little amount of cash, personal stuff matters more and i would have done the same for anything valuable enough to be given back to his rightful owner, like a phone or laptop.
Something similar happened to me about a week ago, left a bag out to use the bathroom and in the like one minute I was gone it got stolen. But the thief only took the money, about 50$, and returned my bag and wallet to lost and found. Didn't lose any cards, ID, anything in my bag. I figured it's the price I'll pay to learn that lesson.
Except the next day I remembered I had 900$ more in there because my landlord was late to pick up the rent. I'm no longer comfortable paying the price of this lesson and I am suffering.

This literally just happened to me. I dropped my wallet outside. Someone from my apartment complex picked it up. $3 dollars are missing but it was returned.
I would say moral. At no point did he have to help the owner, he did it anyway. He could have thrown the wallet away and keep the money, instead he just takes 5 bucks and makes sure the remaining stuff returns. As someone who has lost a wallet in the past, the cards in there are way more important than 5 bucks!

Moral, I believe there's a social expectation that people are fine with a person taking a bit of money for themselves upfront as a cost of their time and effort to return your wallet.
Given that's the default assumption, I wouldn't exactly call it stealing. Even though technically you didn't give them direct permission, most people would assume it was a fair default assumption to make.

Completely fair IMO. It would be more morally correct for the finder to not take any cash, but if they hadn’t I’d insist on at least buying them a beer. I’ve returned wallets before, never took any cash, but when I lived in a place across the street from a strip mall with a liquor store, there would often be teenagers asking people if they could buy them cigarettes and I’d go “Sure”, and they’d slip me a $20, I’d buy them cigarettes, they’d ask about the change when I gave them the cigarettes, and I’d say “procurement fee for doing a crime, bitch”.
Moral. A 5 dollar finder’s fee is nothing in comparison to the headache of deactivating bank cards and getting new ones let alone the nightmare that is getting an ID replaced.
Funny and moral as hell. Shoutout to the kind lady who found 19 year old me’s wallet at the gas station and messaged me on Facebook after looking at my ID, then drove to my house and met me at my front door to return it. I gave her a $20 and she went into my work around the corner and left it with my boss to return it to me as well, then I never saw her again.

When I worked at a ski hill in Canada, we would always find backpacks in the car park with people phones, wallets and go pro cameras. Never stole any of it, however, if you had weed in the bag I would tax it and then ALWYAS return the bag.
Lost my wallet at the state fair and amazingly it was returned anonymously with everything inside. Not a single dollar missing. Would have loved to reward the honest person.
Honestly I'd feel like I owe them something, but any exact amount would feel too much or too little. Them taking $5 and never seeing you resolves that situation and dramatically reduces awkwardness, which I would appreciate.
I'd only be pissed because I'm broke as hell, but like... not as pissed as if I just never found my wallet. He found the wallet, texted the owner, told the owner WHERE he'd bring it (which is an actual safe location), and openly admitted he snagged a mere fiver. Quite moral, really. Modern day hero.
