Not defending it or anything but I think it has to do with your ability to mimic those depicted behaviors. Like sure you can get into fights and some become mass shooters, but’s it’s harder for most people to enact the same violence they see in media, since they understand it’s going to put them in jail.
Meanwhile, romance, sex, and sexual deviance is pretty easily accessible online and in the real world, so there’s more fear for your child to see that on tv and try to mimic it.

u/RogellTheRaider 12d ago
They're pretending that getting a gun and killing people is as easy as engaging in sexual relationships and ending up getting pregnant. Kek.
→ More replies (1)12
u/MatchstickMayhem 12d ago
The danger of a kid having a gun is obvious, but keeping kids ignorant about their bodies and sex doesn't make them safer either.
Age appropriate sex education can help protect kids from predators and help people make informed choices instead of just leaving them to 'fuck around and find out.'
9
u/antsh 12d ago
Luckily, most civilized places start teaching kids age-appropriate sexual education in elementary school. Unless, you’re in like Kentucky or some such place, then it’s abstinence only.
3
u/MatchstickMayhem 12d ago
Some places don't even teach abstinence only. Some completely omit talking about sex to elementary aged kids because they think it's 'more civilized' to leave them in the dark about it until it literally can't be avoided, like when puberty hits girls and they start bleeding or boys wake up with sticky sheets.

We get man boobs far more often than woman boobs too

Might have something to do with dicks sometimes being considered humorous where as a vagina is more often just considered lewd. Definitely a double standard there and with boobs.

I agree, if every uncomfortable subject gets treated as inherently inappropriate, kids might learn shame and silence instead of how to actually understand boundaries and healthy relationships

This one is interesting. I think both scenes affects the brain differently. Watching action movies is not the same as viewing sex scenes. There's definitely a difference.
Obviously I am not talking about thrillers or gore movies. Just regular action scenes.

I think most healthy people know the killing in movies is not true and won't mimic.
Like the classic question: Which is more evil in games? killing someone or rapping someone?
I think most people will say the latter since we all know killing here is not true.
51
u/Any_Instruction5382 12d ago
Killing is definitely worse. Rapping someone is just harassing someone with music. Killing someone is taking a life.

Im glad someone broke it down. This debate has popped up a lot recently for some reason. And the part a lot of people are brush past is TV and movie sex is clearly meant to stimulate, not for education. By all means as a parent teach your kids about sex, but the random sex scene in the show you are trying to watch with your family is probably not the time or the way you want to have that sit down.

Not the same because the former is much more normalized than the latter one. And guess what? Anything’s thats normal isnt weird. This is why u can see some villain in a show commit genocide and nobody will bat an eye and matter of fact the villain might attract admiration. But have a villain commit sexual assault and all they will attract is disgust lmao. Former is normalized, latter isnt.

u/RossNReddit 12d ago
lmaoooo, this is what I'm saying. People talking about "too young to teach them about sex".
Like bruh, it's adult ignorance to assume you don't need to educate your kid and things will be fine. Parents get bent out of shape about leaving 2 17 year olds alone, but whether you like it or not, that same shit's likely happening if you leave 2 under-10's alone.
Praying and blissful ignorance isn't going to educate your child. Education is what educates your child.

u/ReklesBoi 13d ago

3
u/--Arcanum-- 12d ago
My parents would tell me that in a joking tone kind of way, making me think this is prob not the kind of thing to watch with your parents and that kids shouldn't be doing it, but they also weren't serious enough to make me think it's wrong or taboo
So I think the way parents tell their kids not to watch or go after sexual/sexually toned content at younger ages makes a big difference in how their kids perceive it on their own
13
u/amortized-poultry 12d ago
I mean hear me out:
Kids can play fight. Kids should not be playing sex. Sure, killing people is more wrong than having consensual sex, but as far as imitation goes, I would rather kids do the play version of violence than the any version of sex.
Maybe I'm just a crazy prude though Idk.

in a way i kind of get it though. like, death could happen at any time and it’s better for kids to wrap their heads around the concept of death earlier in life so that they understand they’re not immortal and things can and will hurt them.
but there is such a thing as learning about sex too early.
81
u/martianman111 12d ago
Statistically there is not such a thing as learning about sex too early.
Earlier education about sex leads to fewer teen pregnancies/STDs, better awareness about abuse, and generally healthier views of sex
19
u/G-man1816 12d ago
I'd argue however, the birds and the bees are different then an erotic scene in a movie. Sex Ed might not be too early (although its a VERY dangerous leverage point) but erotic content can be

There absolutely is not such a thing as learning about sex too early. Thats not what any research shows. Porn? Sure. Sex as a concept and understanding things like attraction, consent, etc? No.
The biggest impact learning those things early has is decreasing the chance of someone being a victim / not knowing when or how to report it.

Actually, waiting to teach your kids about sex makes them more likely to have sex at a young age or be sexually abused. It’s important to start teaching your kids about sex and what’s appropriate from a fairly early age. Even toddlers can understand the concept of a no-no zone. That one lesson can save them from a predator who assumed they were too young to know better.
2
u/Catymvr 12d ago
A “no no zone” isn’t teaching kids about sex. I think you’re conflating quite a few concepts in your argument.

This debate always seems to come up here in resdit and it's always presented in bad faith.
Most violent scenes in movies are action scenes depictions that look intentionally vague and rarely are graphic or focus on the gore/violence. Think James Bond or Jason Bourne type movies where they shoot someone in the middle of a fight and all you see is their head jerk back and they immediately go ragdoll. Not exactly traumatizing for most people.
On the other hand, sex scenes are a lot more intimate and these days don't shy away from showing off or depicting things vividly. Most families aren't turning their kids away from a simple kissing scene (it's all over Disney films lol) but sex scenes I'm definitely covering my kids eyes for that.
It's really not that deep but reddit can't really do nuanced good faith conversations anymore so here we are.
12
u/Human_097 12d ago
My parents literally let me watch and play resident evil and mortal kombat when I was 13, and even played it with me with passion. Once a make out scene with no nudity comes om a movie, the whole room goes silent.
I don't know why you think everyone's trying to be bad faith, not a charitable view.
6
u/G-man1816 12d ago
My parents are similar. Assassins creed at two years old was fine but I still can't watch bikini scenes without discomfort looks from them
9
u/Vessel767 12d ago
It’s always going to be a little awkward watching a make out scene with your family lol
5
u/BasuraFuego 12d ago
This is it in my opinion.
Sexual visuals can cause sexual arousal. Most people don’t want to be in the room with a family member who is becoming sexually aroused. It’s not that deep.

I don't know what you thought of Mortal Kombat at the time, but I can assure you that people do not have multiple ribcages in their bodies, waiting to explode out if punched with the correct button combos. Nor do real dead bodies look like dehydrated clowns with bad make-up, even if the body has been reanimated.
But you can kiss people. Weird as it may sound.

You're right but you're comparing a simple gun shot to intimate sex
9
u/Dingaling015 12d ago
James Bond films tend to have both of those. What movies are you thinking of that families watch together where graphic, gorey violence is depicted vs the usual shaky cam oh no I'm falling off a skyscraper quick cut to the MC's face before you show me actually dying stuff you usually see in movies?
8
u/ragnarlothbruv 12d ago
I think taking your kids to any R-rated film (which is where you’re going to get more gore and graphic violence) is also wrong. There’s a point where violent images can be traumatic to an undeveloped brain. Implied violence is different.
→ More replies (2)3
u/G-man1816 12d ago
That's the point. Most movies you don't see a guy get hit with a rocket and watch his intestines fly across the screen, compared to the sex that happens on screen its basically the same as being shot with a nerf gun
2
u/External-Gazelle-752 12d ago
To be fair, no one should be showing their kids bridgertons intimate scenes nor Terrifier's gorey scenes. The commenter is obviously saying most action movies have the violence level of James Bond or maybe Fast and Furious. Where you know what happened but its not gorey. And lots of movies have kissing scenes or heavily implied that kids can watch. But you shouldn't be showing your kid soft porn. Because when they start playing imagination, would you rather them use a fake cardboard or plastic as a weapon, or copying the intimate scenes they saw. Not saying either one is better, but I understand more about covering the kids eyes when its sex scenes.
6
u/Throhiowaway 12d ago
There are countless people on this platform that believe wholeheartedly that shows writing teenagers to have crushes is "sexualizing minors" and fully equivalent to pedophilia that should be punished.
Zero way you're getting rational responses.
(Genuinely, children see people kiss in real life fairly frequently. We tend to try to keep them from seeing murder in the streets. Even if gore in media is given a pass because it's fictional, there's no reason for basic intimacy to be treated so taboo and it probably directly leads to high teenage pregnancy rates.)

u/ElBrunasso 12d ago
I'd say moral only if you think consuming problematic content can make you do the things that are depicted. In most parts of the world It's relatively hard to get a weapon. In the other side, all children have genitals, and that makes It easier for them to angage in dangerous activities and even abuse.
Edit: This is my opinion, please don't destroy me and feel free to correct me if you think I'm wrong.
3
u/Ostrichslinger 12d ago
Agreed. Sex is something everyone becomes naturally interested in, but can be heavily influenced by the context with which you've learnt about it. If a sex scene shows two unstable abusers cheating and having hate sex, it's 100% best to not show kids that stuff.
Better yet, how about we have the opportunity to teach our kids about sex instead of letting Hollywood do the job. Its a no brainer, but people (weirdos) disagree.
And then we wonder why rates of infidelity are so high, like they ain't busy watching Love Island like it's the Simpsons.

u/Iluvatar-Great 12d ago
I remember reading this very interesting essay on this topic by a psychologist some years ago, sorry don't remember the exact source. It goes something like this.
Violence is obviously worse than sex, but at the same time, violence in movies is clearly perceived as just an action scene in a movie. We don't really have a deep connection of feelings when someone dies in a movie. Also we don't later go out of theater thinking "Wow I wish I could shoot someone." It may be dangerous for people who are ALREADY predisposed to violence and some movies or media can just deepen this issue.
On the other hand, sex and sexual emotions are very real and most of all they are addictive. When you see something that arouses you, it will give you a strong chemical buzz in your brain make you crave that thing. For example, if a heterosexual man sees naked woman, it instinctively make them horny. And this feeling is again very addictive. So the more people watch erotic content the more they are addicted and also push their fetishes further and further and for some individuals it may end up really bad. For example Ted Bundy was a porn addict and porn no longer satisfied him so he seeked something more exciting, raping and killing.
To summarize this, basically if you see someone shooting in a movie, it doesn't have the same effect as if a 15yo boy sees a sex scene in a movie.
6
u/StarchyJ1540 12d ago edited 12d ago
I feel like this is a product of confirmation bias than anything backed up by science to be honest. no offense
It ignores that depicted violence can give you a similar effect as sex, especially in more interactive media (mortal kombat?), hence "It may be dangerous for people who are ALREADY predisposed to violence".
Also, there are many counterexamples like r*pe fantasies (as you can guess this does not involve wanting to actually r*pe or be r*ped), niche fetishes like inflation or vore, the absurdly common incest theme on certain websites and so much more.
As for Bundy, I think this bit from wikipedia is key:
...most biographers,\376])\377])\378]) researchers,\379]) and other observers\380]) have concluded that his sudden condemnation of pornography was one last manipulative attempt to shift blame by catering to Dobson's agenda as a longtime pornography critic.\381])
Dobson being the interviewer and head of the christian organization Focus on the Family, which "prominently lobbies against LGBT rights"

Thank you for this cool comment. Appreciate the discussion. Yeah I am probably not the best person to talk about this complex topic as I am not an expert. I just wanted to share something I learned long time ago.
There is also spectrum of violence. You get some simple beating (Asterix and Obelix comedy type), and you also get some absolute gore. Also the gore itself may not be the main contributor but rather intent. For example, the TV series about Dahmer, isn't too graphic, but the fact that it shows deeply mentally unstable person doing dark things it make your skin crawl.
But movies like Terminator, are full of shooting and blood, but the shooting is there to point out the action and excitement of running/getting away from danger. So we don't focus on a bullet in a head of a random mobster. Whereas movies like WW2 actions movies are focusing on the horrors of war. So then when we see a depiction of a dead 18yo boy, it makes us very sad because it is grounded in reality.
5
u/Vastergoth 12d ago
Thank you. It seems most discount or don't understand the psychological and biological impetus sexual stimuli play vs depictions of violence. Biologically we are wired for sexual stimulation and activity we are not necessarily wired to be violent outside of self-preservation and most depictions of violence in fillm is rather non-descript, impersonal, and most depictions of it non-gratuitous (for PG13) movies it's just not the same equivalent for sexual depictions which are more arousing or stimulating and maybe poorly understood by younger audiences.
2
u/Iluvatar-Great 12d ago
Well said. Sexual feelings are experienced by 99% of population, but violence is mostly rare.
2
u/sinteredsounds_69 12d ago
I think this is the correct perspective, just because we can't quantify these into accurate stats doesn't mean this doesn't fall in line with what I consider as the practical human experience. It seems pretty obvious to me that things that are sexual in nature will envoke a more predictable experience in a human being than something violent in nature. Consider the 15yr old example. I would assume by the age of 15 you are taught about respect and being kind or others. It is far more common for an individual to go thru situations of "violence" throughout their life than it is for an individual to go thru something sexual. An example would be two children fighting for a toy in daycare or preschool. One child responds by hitting or pushing or pulling the toy away which causes the other child to fall down. This can be perceived to the individual as a mild violent action and so that is why I say a human being has more experience with "violent" interactions than sexual ones. Therefore when the 15yr old experiences those things they are more likely to find them addicting and want to pursue what those feelings are.

i can think of a few factors that may or may not be correct. though im referring to sex here, rather than just kissing
cartoon violence is kind of unavoidable to media creators and that creates kind of a slippery slope to accepting more realistic violence in media
sex or nudity is much more avoidable, is much more problematic if it were in kids media, and creates actual hormonal responses and discomfort within its viewers. And the hormonal responses can REALLY affect a childs brain. possinly causing discomfort to the point of trauma. depending on what you define as trauma at least.
Children are much more likely to act on sexual ideas then they are to act on violent ideas. like uh... hitting someone with a big mallet or stabbing people.
Kissing and bikinis are different from this because its not inherently sexual, much less avoidable, and much less dangerous for childrens psyches and behavior
Kids watch adult shows too. Even if they shouldnt. so no sex allowed.
making viewers uncomfortable, especially in the deep way sexuality can, isnt profitable
puritanism

u/Catymvr 12d ago edited 12d ago
Do you watch your parents have sex? No? Why not. It’s just sex right? Do you have sex in public? No? Why no? It’s just sex.
You don’t have sex in public or actively watch people have sex in public because sex is considered an intimate and private thing.
Erotic content isn’t more taboo than killing because killing is viewed better or as more normal. It’s because sex is viewed as intimate/private whereas killing is not.

There is a reason for this supposed 'double standard':
It is MUCH easier to depersonalize killing than sex. Little boys naturally play shoot-em-ups all the time, with each other or in video games. Bang bang, you're dead, let's go mom is calling us for lunch. Psychologically, the small child's 'caveman brain' is getting ready for when it will take over the role of its father to hunt game or protect the tribe from the 'bad guys.'
Nothing similar can be said of sex. Although children harbor a certain anatomical curiosity, e.g. the infamous 'playing doctor,' the same cannot be said of sex. There is even a period in the child's development of natural self-inforced segregation by sex, where you wouldn't be caught dead playing with someone of the opposite gender. And there is a simple reason for it: it's a protection mechanism.
What does 'sex' bring in a child's life? Nothing good. Parent's having sex bring 'competition' and any interaction of that nature brings nothing good to the child's body or psychology. So naturally, a child's mind has no use for sex until it reaches puberty and therefore it usually children experience revulsion even at something as benign as their parents kissing in front of them. This is why 'playing war' is common, but 'playing sex' isn't. Any topic related to sex is a topic best left for when the child is fully psychologically ready for it and overall has a strong enough sense of self.
As a parent, you quick figure this out, so the impulse to protect children from age-inappropriate sexual content is not as ridiculous as it may initially seem.

I think it's more based on the expectations for the movie you're watching with you're kids. If it's a horror movie then it's expected but too many movies have out-of-the-blue straight up pornography that I'm sure no one wants to watch with their mom and dad.
If parents went into a movie theater with their kids expecting to see an innocent Disney movie but suddenly it cuts to a brutal gorefest, parents would immediately cover their kids eyes and won't even look themselves. They'd even leave immediately and complain.
2
u/No-Departure-6900 13d ago
Slightly inmoral, but more hypocritcal than anything.
It really doesn't make sense that seeing a character doing something non sexual while nude is too much, while a character getting their arm cut off with realistic gore is more acceptable.
What's truly immoral is when sexual things are censored in ADULT media. Like, who the fuck is that for? Who is allowed to see the content if not an adult?

Morally neutral.
Listen, violence happens. It does and being squeamish about it isn't going to solve it...Sex does too, but violence is acceptable at just about every age. Kids getting into fights and should know it is a tool to use to defend yourself and others, teens throw hands to defend themselves and learn to stand up for themselves, adults fighting for X, Y, Z reasons all happen and is healthy, to some degree, to experience and get used to. It is even more important to teach them that violence is a tool that should be respected which is why in most situations violence is solving a problem you can't talk away. You don't pull a gun out during an argument, you do so to defend yourself or others from harm kind of deal. But sex is inherently different in this case.
There is no reason for me to sit here and say they're equivalent and there is no reason anyone here should say that it should be more blatant and open. Making it more open makes it more acceptable to a younger audience and the only reason you'd want to do that...Well, there's a few questions we should ask about you. Violence being more open in things is meant to make it more openly discussed on its uses and more openly accepted to seeing it happen around you...That said opening up with more erotic scenes in things that are meant to be more family friendly or just in general is making it more acceptable and is trying to reach a younger audience...And yes, it leads to some people trying to push it towards the young. Whether you like it or not, it happens.
Kissing overall is fine, heck my heavily conservative family didn't give a rat's ass about kissing as that happens and would even do so in front of my brother and I in public much to our protests when we were young, but that also is the scale of it. Romantic should be fine, seeing what love and how you're supposed to act to one another in amorous or supportive natures without diving into full on tongues and grinding is something that should be acceptable.

I did a Google search on this once, it started a couple hundred years ago with the puritans I think. The puritans, wanting perfection and to keep away from the rest of the world ended up shaming different acts such as nudity and anything sexual. My idea is that killing people who go to jail or enemies in war was common enough for that to not get shamed but with church encouraging virginity and puritans purity, nudity and sex was seen as shameful and thus avoided

It's too perplexed for reddit and 20th century movies filled with sex fried people's brains on the issue. Let's see how it affects children in the animal kingdom. Kittens will for sure see their mom killing prey to bring them food and they will also copy her via playing onve they are over 75 days old by pushing a dead snake, bird, mouse, etc with their paws around. But they will not see their mom having sex with tomcats for maybe up until they are 10 months old since cats who raise kittens avoid getting pregnant again until they even bring those kittens at teenage age. So it's not as ''natural'' as redditors believe and kids really do not need to see that happening at all even in animals until they themselves are teenages or even adults in the animal kingdom. While hunting and killing is something they need to learn from the time they are toddlers since carnivores need to hunt, herbivores need to be willing to kill a predator to defend themselves and omnivores both these actions.
So from a purely biological standpoint it's moral.

Its extremely immoral and actively harmful to the development of humans. Its driven by puritan BS.

What's crazy in that in some countries, the roles are reversed. Erotic moments and fan service is considered family friendly but violence is censored and for adults only

People are acting like parents always treat violence as better than romance. Can’t speak for everybody, but in my house they didn’t. When I was really young, my parents would be fine with me watching a movie with some violence, but nothing gory or extra bloody. Similarly, they’d be fine with kissing scenes but not sex scenes. In fact, parents are usually fine with their kids watching innocent romance/rom-com movies where the whole point is romance, but less so on movies where the whole focus is violence and violence alone.
It’s the classic storybook tale where the knight slays the dragon and rescues the damsel in distress with true love’s kiss. If the knight rescued the damsel in distress and then had sex with her, I don’t think many parents would be comfortable with that. But if the knight disembowled the dragon and feasted on its blood and stuck a bunch of rusty needles in its eyes before it died, that also wouldn’t fly. It’s about the innocence and purity of the act.

My grandma cheered while we were watching a Rambo movie and he was mowing down a bunch of Asians. I knew she hated my aunt that my uncle brought home from Vietnam but that really opened my eyes.

I don’t remember ever getting my eyes shielded over kissing or hugging.. would have to be more explicit than that

Not really comparable though right? I’ve made this same point in the past but overtime I’ve kind of landed on the idea that they shouldn’t really be compared in terms of rating systems or personal approach when exposing media to children. We’re definitely a repressed culture (at least the US) but I don’t know that the comparison is valid.

I don’t cover my kids’ eyes for either of them, but for some reason they cover their own eyes if the characters so much as hug.

I think thats personal preference.
There's people that cant stand PDA (Public Displays of Affection)
and plenty of people that can't stand the sight of blood.
I was allowed to watch whatever I wanted as a kid.
I can say its moral to put restrictions on what your kids watch at young ages,
but I also say its moral for the parents to pick and choose whats appropriate and whats not, for their own kids.
No immorality here.

Yeah, I'm all for sex in movies, TV, video games, and my bedroom...but I think it's disingenuous to argue that people should treat them the same.
I acknowledge that violence exists...but for most people, and especially the type of violence we watch in media.... it's effectively not real.
I'm not in middle Earth. I'm not fighting zombies. I'm not attacking Thanos...
I understand, even as a small child, that this type of violence was pretend.
Sex is very different.
We can debate whether or not seeing sexual acts in media has any impact on anything; but it's still fundamentally different.
I wanted to have sex. I did have sex. Having sex had a profound impact on my life - more than anything else.
At some point, my kids are apart certainly going to have sex.
They will almost certainly never even attempt to do the violent stuff depicted in media. They almost certainly wouldn't even want to.

I think that viewers are more likely to have "relations" than to murder someone. I presume that is why. Moral.

1. Don't be violent. Why? Because it hurts others. Do you like being hurt?
Extremely straightforward and can be demonstrated easily. Kids learn quickly just by regular roughhousing anyways.
- Don't do sex. Why? Because sex feels really really really good. Do you like feeling good?
In an ideal world, everyone will have parents who teach their kids about the COMPLEXITY of sex and tell them about the dangers of unprotected sex and sex predators.
Explaining PERMISSIBLE sexual behavior is complicated and requires careful explanation that navigates reasons why one shouldn't do it before you're "mature enough" (hint: most teens believe they are far more mature than they really are)
Condemning violence is very straightforward by comparison and most kids quickly learn it's a Bad Thing.
It doesn't take much to convince a 5 year old not to drink foul-smelling brown sewer water, while they may be attracted to the look and smell of a bright yellow alcohol-infused pina colada.
Both are bad ideas for the child, but one is harder to get them not to drink it.

I'm not commenting on the morality of it. But are you saying you wish it was more socially respectable to watch sex scenes with your parents?
2
u/GeckoGecko_ 12d ago
It is kind of funny when you consider that sex is a good thing that humans generally want to do and are expected to do, while murder is an absolute taboo no-no. Why is one suddenly worse than the other simply because it's happening on a screen and not irl??

I don't know about a moral but I do think it's incredibly stupid and it should have been backwards a long ass time ago.
The fact that people see literal murder as more tasteful then a penis or some boobs is wild.
It is especially hilarious in countries where this stuff gets moderated despite being targeted towards adults.
Like.....bro I would literally die from cringe living under a government filled with people who are that regarded. Why the fuck would a grown ass adult need to be protected from seeing sex or private parts? XD

u/darkestvice 12d ago
This always puzzled me. I mean, people usually attribute it to the religious guilt ... but there's no commandment against having sex, while there absolutely is one for murder.

I don't get it I really don't. Who the fuck wants to watch this shit with their family ESPECIALLY with kids? It's so ungodly uncomfortable and terrible

u/Impossible-Bat-4246 13d ago
Who's them? Most of the time the ones being killed are either monsters or masked people that may as well be robots.
If monsters or masked people were kissing then they could be watched.

u/Luckyguy0697 13d ago
Idk man, plenty of people don't have a problem watching John Wick with their kids. But will totally freak out about a little tongue action
2
u/Impossible-Bat-4246 13d ago
I may be out of touch, but I think the vast majority of parents aren't taking their kids to see John Wick.

Sounds like growing up in a Mormon household. Mormons are very anti infidelity, but yet they will watch horror movies or really violent war movies. And then there's the video games that their kids are already playing.

its an old joke that european censorship goes: porn - good, violence - bad
and american censorship goes: porn - bad, violence - good

Yeah god doesn't care if you kill people, just don't fuck outside of marriage.

u/TheT85_Jr 13d ago
I mean, it depends on the severity of that in both cases.
Kisses and censored kills like Disney did them are are both completely fine.
Actual NSFW Scenes obviously not. Also in both cases
1
u/sodabad4bones_ 13d ago
It depends. Lets say…im watching “full metal jacket” with my offspring. I would personally hide the scenes of sexual behavior and some of the violence is Important for the film. Like the sniper scene

u/Lorelessone 13d ago
This is something that always confused me about American TV especially.
I was watching the walking dead and they had maybe 20 scenes of brutal death, people being turn apart by bare hands, guts being stretched out etc etc. Then they had a scene with a woman in a shower and the care taken to avoid any nudity being shown was comical in comparison.
To any sane person a nude human body, especially not engaged in any sex act, is perfectly fine compared to a human body being torn apart and eaten.

When people get naked in movies, they really do get naked. When people did in movies, they're only acting

Reminds me of this time people freaked out that there was a sex scene in The Walking Dead. This was several seasons into the show. They had already dealt with cannibals and Negan and all sorts of awful shit.
People filed complaints because two people had very tame sex in an episode. Mostly off camera.
