Haha, for a white dog, you can just use freshly cut grass clippings.
Presuming wonkybingo would object to that as well, unless the dog rolled themselves in it, but should the clippings be purposely presented to the dog it may create moral gray area for them, lol

Out of his own volition or was he tempted? (just making sure wonkybongo won't be upset if they read it)
16
u/StSomewhereToaster 1d ago
Of his own volition! He did NOT consent to the bath afterwards, though. I must be a terrible pet owner!

Well, it's more or less the same as dyeing your own hair. I'd say it's neutral. But I'd be careful around other dogs, they might have some very odd reactions
137
u/Silent-Victory-3861 1d ago
Or your children's hair - people can do all kinds of things to themselves that they are definitely not allowed to do to other beings.
197
u/fikozacc123 1d ago
As long as the chemicals safe There's literally no problem
66
u/Dark_halocraft 1d ago
Well a child might actually care about how they look while a dog wouldn't so it'd depend on of the kid is ok with it or not
9
u/Electrical-Fig-5009 14h ago
Dog might love the extra attention too when people are like !!! COLORED DOG!!! in public

Kids love having their hair fun colors! Iāve never heard of a parent forcing their kids to dye their hair.

We had a kid come into my 2nd grade class with neon blue hair. The only ones that seemed distracted were the teachers coming in the room to tell him he had to shave it or dye it back.
He didn't lol

u/Kindly_Ice_7510 23h ago
Most adults who dye their kids hair aren't just doing it because they play barbie with them, there are lots of kids who'd kill to dye their hair (I was one), the far more worrying trend with moms and kids are things like diet culture and the slow dysmorphia that leads to kids 'wanting' plastic surgery or implants.
What about how we let our kids do their own hair? Grow it out or cut it off? Their make up? Piercings? To a kid in it, hair dyes not all that different, unlike piercings its semi permanent, it grows out just like a haircut or bangs you don't want...
IMO, Parents are far more likely to prevent a kid from doing what they want to their hair, than doing something like a perm or dye against their will, but by the point they want to do that to you, you've probably seen mom do it enough you're kind of numb to it, and/or you've been having your hair "done" enough you're numb to it (my hair texture was curly, so it was a mess my whole childhood unless mom spent time flatironing it), and/or you've been actively negged about your natural hair color's beauty so much you agree to it (I was told I had dishwater brown hair, from ages 10-12, when I finally agreed to bleaching blonde, and I've not been natural since.)
signed someone who self identified as my moms dress up barbie from ages 8-16, and only felt safe to finally use purple hair dye with the Atlantic ocean between us (she's gotten over it).

u/FeralGinger 21h ago
Oh can I tell a memory that you just unlocked.
When i was a baby, I was super blonde. For one Halloween, my brothers used some colored mousse to give me pink hair. They didn't expect to stain for a month.
Coincidentally, it was right around this time I was losing my baby blonde and growing in copper. My mom used to tell people my brothers gave me the ginger

Dogs don't see color like we do
3
u/No-Temporary-4227 17h ago
But they're not completely blind to colour. Even then, if you paint a dog to look exactly like a fox, which has very contrasted colours, another dog might actually not see that dog as a dog. Until the sniff test, that is. I just can't say there's no risk factor involved

Iād imagine a dog dyed as a fox has a higher chance of getting attacked by other dogs. Half the dogs if dogsat absolutely hates foxes.
39
u/wanderingAtlas 1d ago
Dogs are much more likely to use smell than sight. I dont think theyd confuse another dog for a fox just because its fur is dyed...

Seriously. Haven't people ever noticed how wildly different various dog breeds look? If you have a dog that's never seen X breed of dog before - something extreme like a toy poodle or chihuahua, they aren't confused.
And that's on top of the fact that they don't have access to the same color spectrum that we do. They can't see orange for example. The whole point of foxes being that color in the first place is that it acts as camouflage. (This is the same reason why deer can't see the orange vests that hunters use.)

Neutral. Assuming pet safe dye. They probably don't like the dyeing process, but they probably do like the extra attention they are getting afterwards.Ā
53
u/komakumair 1d ago
This, it does need to process to get the effect, so it makes the grooming process longer. For the more complex dye jobs, a lot of the videos I see are of the groomer working with their own personal animal, who is supremely used to being fussed over and is very chilled out as their owner paints crazy dye shapes onto them.
→ More replies (1)12
u/Grouchy-Way171 23h ago
I think the only real argument against it is that it brings the animal as an accessory rather than a companion a lot closer. Then again, the people who dish out this type of money for their animals also make sure their animal is very well taken care of so *shrug*

u/Starlightriddlex 17h ago
The guy who did most of these dye jobs actually dyed my dog (she's a lion). She loves people and being petted, so after she got dyed and turned into a magnificent lion I took her to the local ren faire and I swear everyone in attendance stopped to pet her. I'm not sure I have seen a happier dog. The queen of the faire even requested her to attend to receive additional pets lol.

I met someone who specialized in this kind of thing. She'd get people flying in from all over the country. She explained that most of the dogs were therapy dogs who visit children. If the groomer is using dog safe dyes I think it's perfectly fine and can make a sick kid's day. So I'd say morally neutral, because it doesn't harm the dog and contributes to their job but it's also not technically necessary... As long as they don't try and cut corners and they do it the proper way.
6
u/Sad_Management4627 13h ago
It also prevents theft of pets/service dogs, since a more recognized animal is harder to slip out of a crowd with, and until the fur grows out they can't shave off the color so its more hassle than worth it for most
52
u/Kaspatronix 1d ago
Non toxic dye? No harm? no allergic reaction? Moral. As long as there is no animal abuse going on and the pet is happy, it's your animal and you are allowed to adjust it's appearance.
Way better than other (somehow legal) things people do to their pets.

u/rosy_pink_ghost 1d ago
Neutral. Not necessary but as long as pet sage dye is used it's fine. Also I feel like people who dye their pets are more likely to get them regularly groomed, so that's good. I've seen videos of groomers having to deal with EXTREMELY matted dogs (like dogs that haven't been to a groomer in years) and it always upsets me when it's revealed that the dog HAS owners
17
3
u/TheUndeadBake 21h ago
I have heard that some people dye their dogs if theyāre of a breed that are highly coveted and expensive, as a means to discourage would be thieves because 1) a rare/expensive dog thatās been dyed would be highly conspicuous 2) a rare/expensive breed that was dyed and then shaved would also be conspicuous either due being dramatically shaved short or hard to get rid of the dyed for without complete shave. Either way itād be noticeable

I mean, I wouldn't. But as long as it doesn't hurt the dog and it's well treated, who gives a shit. I'm sure the dog doesn't
23
u/DiabeetusDeletus 1d ago
Neutral. As a groomer I'll way in, dyeing dogs is completely safe as long as... 1. Dog safe dye is used. Not just non-toxic it needs to be DOG SAFE specifically. The dye used is wash out so temporary but might stain white dogs, no bleach or permanent dyes should ever be used. We often use chalk (like hair chalk). 2. The dog LOVES grooming and is willing to allow it and is healthy and able to sit for the process. (Trying this on any dog that hates or even mildly dislikes grooming is cruel, believe it or not dogs that love the process and would do it all day exist) 3. You are aware that other animals might react differently to your dog with such a drastic change and take precautions. However this is true for any time you get your dog groomed. Appearance isn't actually that important for dogs in recognising people, the smell is more important. Cats especially freak out a bit when smells change. 4. You keep in mind that your house will probably end up dyed too.

u/PartyPorpoise 1d ago
My old dog loved going to the groomers, she totally wouldāve been down for this. My current dog would probably like it too, but heās all black, nothing to dye.

u/Sickofchildren 1d ago
Dyed dogs are less likely to be stolen and as long as the dye is pet safe itās fine. The dog doesnāt care. That being said I think itās kind of odd how the owners give them some of the stupidest haircuts and dye jobs, it feels a bit like a humiliation ritual or like they want their pet to look really silly. Neutral
4
u/Grasshoppermouse42 1d ago
Neutral as long as you're using pet safe dyes. Your pet doesn't care, and doesn't know it's any different from getting a bath. Also, if your dog loves attention, and most do, they'll love having a bunch of people smiling and gushing over them when they see them.
4
u/nonbinaryunicorn 1d ago
Neutral, but make sure you use dog safe dyes, stop if your dog expresses discomfort, and don't do it to dogs who do not like attention from strangers.
4
u/D4rk3scr0tt0 1d ago
They look happy, assuming they're not in danger from the dye then it's alright
4
u/Cc_the_husky 20h ago
Moral itās safe for the dogs (if using pet safe dye which I believe all the clips in this video are), the dogs donāt care, and itās easier for the owners to identify the dog if it got lost or stolen :)
3
u/stfudonny420 23h ago
So from what I can tell these dogs are being dyed with animal safe products and are used to regular grooming. If the dog was scared or being forced that would be immoral. If the dye was unsafe that would be immoral. Seems like none of those things are happening so I would say moral.
3
u/Ok-Phase-9076 23h ago
On one hand, you shouldnt turn your pet loooking like a plushie just for fun or attention. On the other hand, i doubt the dogs give a fuck and are happy about the extra attention from strangers.
As long as its not physically harmful i guess?

2
u/ScoutTrooper501st 1d ago
I mean I wouldnāt call it entirely moral but itās def not a bad thing
The dog doesnāt care how it looks, itās just happy to be there and happy itās getting attention, so long as the dye is dog/animal safe I donāt see any real issue
2
u/woodland-haze 1d ago
I mean, if it doesnāt hurt the dog in any way, i guess its fine? It just looks really uncanny
2

2
u/DragonsAreNifty 1d ago
Itās fine. I have a cat specific and safe shampoo that deposits pink color into the fur. My cats both have tummy issues and need to be bathed more regularly. The dye has actually been helpful with tracking when their worst tummy episodes are, as the color gets brighter based on the number of washes in a given timeframe.
2
u/thejudgeofmortals 1d ago
Dogs are incapable of caring about what they look like, so as long as it's done in a non harmful way it's fine
2
u/viccyofficial 1d ago
I think itās okay, if itās a pet-safe dye.

Here's my take as a vet nurse of nearly 10 years. All the things people do to their pets, all the neglect I have seen... if people want to pamper their pets and dye them (with pet safe dye) thats great! I love that they love their pet enough to keep up with a high maintenance coat routine! The dog does not care about the colour and as long as correct dye is used, it isn't harmful! As long as their pet is happy, safe, loved and healthy that is all that matters.

The biggest thing is just how badly the dog minds it.
Like some of these poodle cuts, you know ow the dog is bored out of their mind and does actually mind being up and shorn.
They live such shorter lives than us that I feel bad for the dogs that are told to just stand there and become a canvas for hours on end.
But that's a huge miniscule amout totally, I guess to me it isn't actually the dyeing of the critters more than it is the styleing of them.
I always threatened my mom that I would dye any of the dogs with beet juice LMAO

They can't always see well, so they rely on their smell. When the smell is disrupted it can be challenging for them.
Basically imagine trying to recognise your friend in the dark. If they are far away, you may think they are a stranger until they come closer and you can see them better.
(Smell obv won't help.)

I don't necessarily see anything wrong with it. As long as the dye and all other addings can be removed afterwards and do not cause any allergic reaction, I'd say it's a harmless form of art.
Animals don't exist on the same ,,dimension" as we humans do, if I can describe it as such. For instance, many people could frown on me if I was a parent and dressed my kids up in ways like this, and then made them go to school or other public settings like this without their agreement at least; similarly to posting it on social media. Whilst technically legal, it isn't nice to do to them, as it may hinder their social interactions; in other words, what I'd be doing would no longer be harmless. Animals don't view each other this way; they don't understand what would be wrong in wearing a rainbow fur or being dressed up as a small lion. Their social interactions will not change because of that.
1
u/North_Affect_8167 1d ago
Did it cause harm to the dog? Yes, then is immoral. No, then is up to debate.
Are dog collars immoral?
1
u/Aggressive_Manner429 1d ago
Well the dogs seem fine, as long as they don't mind the hair dying process and aren't allergic to any of the ingredients I'd say it's completely fine
1
u/Eastern-Move549 1d ago
Providing it does no damage to the animal its still not moral as dyeing will cause all sorts of stress on an animal.

The only immoral one is the hairstyle (fur style?) that obstructs the dog's vision.
Other than that, so long as the dog doesn't mind, and gets extra attention after, neutral. So long as other dogs don't treat them differently, neutral.
1
u/LegoBattIeDroid Megatron 1d ago
the act itself is probably neutral but I think it's immoral to try given the high risk of allergic reactions

u/TheSkyElf 1d ago
Neutral; if it's pet-safe, then there is no danger as long as you don't dye them in a way that gets them attacked. And it isnt permanent either.
Besides, doggo gets more attention and love, and would be harder to lose/kidnap.

1
u/suspiciouslyrobotic 1d ago
So long as the dyes are non-toxic to dogs, there's literally nothing wrong with it.
1
u/Roving_kitten 1d ago
If the dog doesnāt care, thereās no reason for the human to care unless it hurts them.
1
u/GabysWildCritters 1d ago
As long as its pet friendly dyes and the dog dosnt mind the grooming process i think this is fine.
Some dogs are very tolerant and dont mind the process so if safe dyes are heing used the its fine but if you have a dog that gets very anxious and you're doing this just so they look pretty then immoral.
1
u/ShuukBoy 1d ago
Weird? Yes. Waste of money? Yea. Immoral? Probably not more than your average extravagance
1
u/ShadowTheChangeling 1d ago
Long as its pet safe and the pet in question doesnt seem to mind it, its neutral
1
u/K1bbles_n_Bits 1d ago
I think it depends on the temperament of the dog and how well (or not well) they handle a trip to the groomer.
If they're the sort who gets really stressed and is miserable during grooming, then it's not right to put them through more than necessary (like nail trimming, bath, mayne a trim if necessary).
This is about the shaving to achieve some of these looks rather than the dying, but it's worth noting that some breeds shouldn't be buzzed. Some have an undercoat and shaving it down can damage it and permanently affect how it grows back. In which case, immoral. Of both the owner and especially the groomer for either not knowing better or not caring.
But specifically for the dye? As long as the process of doing it isn't causing undue stress, then nbd. The dye itself doesn't harm them and the dog doesn't care what color it is. But if it stresses them out and scares them to go through the dye process? Then shitty and selfish for a person to do it for their own amusement and vanity.

1
u/Impressive_Clue_9193 1d ago
I hear so many people scream "ABUSE!!!" mainly on yt even though it's literally dog safe dye and I'm guessing the dog does in fact not hate being groomed / the process because no groomer would do unnecessary shit to a dog that is clearly having a bad time.Ā
Those videos of severely matted dogs who are usually freaking out the whole time because it hurts, even the groomers in those videos sometimes have to stop before they can even finish a necessary groom because it's too much for the dog and they need to just go to a vet. So of course a groomer wouldn't be dying a dog who is already very upset just at getting the initial trim and bath.Ā

Unfortunately there's not enough PSA's to prevent people from using the wrong dye and then harming their pets. I saw a little dog abandoned in pure misery bc somebody dyed it with harmful chemicals. That poor dog shivering in agony stays with me.
1
u/vxsapphire 1d ago
Moral if the product does not harm them or other animals. Immoral if it does.
Iād enjoy the hell out of a dog parade by this stylist since they use pet safe products.
1
u/Punisher703 1d ago
These are a bit ridiculous, especially if the dyes have chemicals.
Back when my mom had her shih tzu the only thing she'd let her have was hair chalk, and only on her head, to let it get washed out on its own.
1
1
u/PhantomPaw 1d ago
Pet safe dye and quality groomers won't bother a dog. Sure, its still best to keep dye away from their eyes and any spots that might have a reaction, but its fine. I've heard of some people who dye their dogs so theyre easily noticeable if they escape/get stolen. Not many dogs out there that can easily be described as "rainbow"
1
u/-AleXisiXelA- 1d ago
Generally Iām against it unless itās a poodle bc poodles have extremely thick fur so they are really difficult to harm with dyes. Overall neutral bc the dog canāt consent but if youāre not harming them itās fine
1
u/Thiingswithwings 1d ago
Neutral if not moral. Obviously, there are unsafe ways to dye animals, but when done safely, they just look neat and the dog doesn't really care about what it looks like.
Plus people will often dye their pet's fur to prevent them from being stolen, as people are less likely to steal a dog thats so distinct and easily identifiable.
1
u/PopcornInspiration 1d ago
Well seem pretty happy and like they donāt particularly care about their hair
1
1
u/NoShine1143 1d ago
As long as it's safe to eat it's fine, cause animals lick themselves. I think there was one movie in the 80s that needed a panther cause it was a sequel but they could only get a tiger so they painting it black and it died cause it keep licking itself and eating the paint.
1
u/vanillacreamwafer 1d ago
Neutral, but I don't know how to feel about the dyes being so close to their eyes. One of the most famous pet safe dyes still use chemical colorants that are known carcinogens and potentially cause behavioral changes in dogs when ingested, not to mention prolonged dyeing can cause skin irritation and develop allergic reactions. Its just an unnecessary risk purely for human enjoyment that I wouldnt take but if the dog enjoys it and its done sparsely, it's not very harmful.
1
u/TheOwlStrikes 1d ago
It's stupid but morality wise I think it's really just based on how toxic the dye is. If the dye is nontoxic than I think it's morally neutral.
1
1
u/Naive-Amphibian9904 1d ago
Stupid? Yes. But if the dye isn't toxic to the dog and has no negative effects then it's whatever i guess. Dog breeding selective traits that makes a dogs life hell and shortens life spans should be looked at legally though. (I know that part isn't relevant in this post but still)
1
u/Dear_Sunshower 1d ago
As long as the dye is safe, whatever.
Personally though...I hate it. So much.
1
u/Downtown-Row-321 1d ago
Iād be so worried about something happening. Especially with the Fox-dyed pup.
I live in the deep boonies and I wouldnāt doubt some crazy would shoot it.
1
u/Razberryrabbit 1d ago
There's a lot of fearmongering with doing it because some people find it ridiculous or don't like it. That's fine, but they will also tell others how it isn't safe and the dog doesn't have a good time.
It is 100% safe, dyes for dogs exist. Will the dog suffer? No, it doesn't hurt them, however a lot of dogs don't like going to the groomer's, usually because they haven't been conditioned from a young age. Dye jobs are not necessary unlike everything else so if the dog doesn't behave I don't think it's a good idea.
