Morality of getting too many cybernetic implants

u/Awkward-Iron-2031 16h ago
Doesnt it depend? I never played the game or watched the show but having too many of the implants can cause you to snap and go into "Cyber Psychosis" and harm others around you right? So I guess if you dont overload yourself its moral.

Personally I'm a fan of the theory that V is just in full blown cyber psychosis for like the entire game after the tower but is just held back by having a second mind jacked into their brain to share the load Pacific Rim style.

u/Awkward-Iron-2031 16h ago
If you always go full cyber psycho then it would be immoral as you can just start harming the people around you.

you can have a insane amount of implants aslong as you have a ton of meds to inject yourself to turn you back to normal from cyberpsychosis but once you run out then there is nothing you can do
however very rarely somebody can handle it without meds like Adam Smasher

Its... Complicated. Mike Pondsmith, the creator of cyberpunk likened it to Steroid Rage. Different people have different tolerance and reactions to cybernetics. In the anime, David has an incredible tolerance for it, to the point its speculated that the megacorps are after him to research why he's so adept at taking implants, to build the next generation super soldier.
Meanwhile in the game, V is sharing the load with the Relic Engram, the addition of the digital ghost of Johnny silverhand is the equivalent of splitting the load across 2 people. Of course there's the issue of the engram wiping their mind buut that's a different kettle of fish.
Lastly, on the tabletop, there's the Humanity stat, which correlates to how much cyberware you can shove into you safely. Going over your limit runs the risk of you losing your mind any time you activate any piece of tech. And its up to the DM ajd the dice to decide what happens. Extreme examples of Humanity is Adam Smasher, the man is so psychotic/sociopathic that his humanity is null, not 0, but nothing, he feels and acts the same whether he's piloting a trillion Eurodollar mech suit as he is stuck in a fleshsuit. Hell he probably prefers being a brain in a jar driving a mech.
Another example of wild cybernetics is David's Sandevistan, his fancy bullet time slow mo implant. By table top rules this thing lets the user do double actions for no stamina cost. The downside is that you basically have 20s of uptime before you lose your mind, and another 20s before the implant flat out kills you. 3 seconds of use is the equivalent of 2 weeks of detox and therapy, where you're not allowed to use any cybernetic.

Only an issue if you go Cyber Psycho and start hurting allies. If you can handle it, its no big deal
14
u/FrijDom1 16h ago
If you can handle it, it's by definition not "too many".

But you literally don't know the limit. That's like saying I intentionally blow the Asian continent, but then for some reason everyone moved out of the continent and not a single soul was there but I'm not aware so what I did was moral
1
u/FrijDom1 15h ago
That's... The most insane statement I've ever heard, and completely opposite my point. My point is more like it's immoral to blow up Asia even if you know there's a possibility that everyone could've already been evacuated. You might not hurt anyone, but you're more likely to than not, and if you don't it's by pure chance.
1
u/2w0be 15h ago
Literally my point. Are you not seeing it? There's a chance you will go Berserk and hurt people and you don't know how much will finally trigger it but you keep doing it anyway so how's that not immoral???

u/FrijDom1 14h ago
Then you're talking to the wrong person. I never said it's not immoral. The guy I replied to called it not a big deal "if you can handle it". But if you're only going as far as you know you can handle, you're by definition not getting too many. I was pointing out that his statement didn't address the actual question.

Im sorry but there’s no way someone would get cyberpsychosis after installing a kebab cyberware, if anything that’d reduce the risk of cyberpsychosis

Immoral. It fucks with your mental stability and causes you to become spontaneously murderous to anyone in the vicinity. Like you might as well ask what the morality is of putting a bomb in a public space, concealed so no one knows its there. And every minute it activates a random number generator 1-20. It blows up if it rolls a 1.

Stupid idiot did stupid idiot things.
In general, only immoral if you are aware if you descent in to cyberpsychosis. Because that makes you a danger to everyone, not just yourself.

That is like asking the morality of getting a tattoo. Your body your choice. End of discussion.

considering you can go cyberpsycho and then completely lose it and kill abunch of people while being nearly unkillable...

In the context of cyberpunk it is immoral. Going cyber psycho from to many implants can lead to dozens of people dying

By the image i assume we are using cyberpunk logic, in which case this would put both yourself and others around you in danger, thus immoral

Do amputees go insane if they get plenty of prothesis? Would you grandma turn psycho because of her titanium hip?

Moral. Cyber psychosis explicitly is not real. It's a catch all term used to deflect blame away from the cruel inhumanity of world and onto the individuals who are being crushed under the weight of that society. This is shown in the ttrpg itself and confirmed by the creator.

The thing about cyberpsychosis is there are countless perfectly sane fullborgs and exotics. The self actualization can be deeply fulfilling.
However, your average corpo, ganger, soldier, or edgerunner has the mental health of a particulary coked up march hare. It does not take much to drive them off the deep end.
They're not getting chrome to self actualize. They're getting chrome to become killing machines. And so they do

Have you seen shwarma prices? You are wasting money by not getting one.
