Morality Ranking Morality of this?

u/natgrett 14h ago edited 14h ago
I mean is the business local, if anyone saw it happen, regardless of posting, the guys actions could still backfire on him or the business if people identify him. If my local water heater installer had a guy screaming about Christian nationalism I wouldn’t want them in my house especially if they aim to destroy private property they don’t agree with. The people have a right to know who they do business with and to feel sure of their safety when they do.

Moral
67
u/they_themsworth 13h ago
Yes. I tend to think “doxxing” implies info a person would reasonably expect to stay private. Things you did in public, in the lobby of an open business, before hopping into a car with a huge branded logo on it is not that.

I think it’s this incident here
https://www.fox13news.com/news/starbucks-customer-accused-ripping-down-stores-pride-flag.amp
Here’s the bodycam of him getting arrested.
15
u/Thefluffiestcat20 9h ago
Shit, I didn't click on the links, wish I could take the heart back. The cops were too nice to him and he got out after 6 fucking hours
4
u/the_boss_of_toys 4h ago
Not surprising i used to run away and fight all the time and the police mostly went "eh... stop it..." getting arrested is super easy... getting into jail is a little harder. Ive literally gone 35 over the speed limit, caught dead to rights by a cop and then let off with just a speeding ticket. Legally I should have went straight to jail. You could literally steal a TV from a Walmart and get let off, you could randomly punch a dude and get let off, you could trespass and get let off. You'd be surprised by how many cops really dont want to book you/legally cant.

sure freedom of speech means getting to commit hate crimes, but it also means being able to do this
17
u/Blep145 11h ago
I think freedom of speech protects you from the government - it doesn't mean you get to go around saying whatever you want. I know you're not defending this person- it's just that a lot of people seem to think it means you can say whatever you want without consequence

Exactly. Dude is publicizing his business. How the fuck is it immoral to state his company name!?
1
u/WildGoose1521 4h ago
No. The original post is actually a link to a business supposedly listed on his truck and from there people quickly found the owner’s address and started posting his home address with comments saying “it’d be awful if someone paid him a visit”
1
u/Late-Childhood1285 3h ago
They are literally portraying their business to personally identify them and quite literally destroy them
Both sides are Immoral
1
u/WashedUpRiver 2h ago
Yeah, this is straight up what people mean when they tell you that you represent the company while wearing the logo and such. It's no different really than leaving a negative review and telling everyone they're shit.

5
u/TickyTackyShotAFashy 14h ago
I have an earnest question, do the actions of the immoral change the morality of our response? Or does it change our willingness to accept the otherwise morally intolerable?
7
u/Gape_the_snake 13h ago
Any action or reaction is morally decided on context imo, and the entire purpose of this subreddit, as is puts the action/reaction underneath a microscope to decide it's morality.
Example, murder is morally wrong. Murder in earnest defense of your life though is moral.

Turn the narrative on its head and see if the act is still moral.
"A guy came into my store and was super nice. Anyway here is the company name we saw on the side of his truck. Have fun."
The positivity or negativity stems from the actions of "the guy" and not from the sharing of publicly available information.

I feel like this fits neatly into the Tolerance Social Contract. This person wasn't tolerant of people who did nothing to harm them, seeking instead to harm these people. By choosing to be intolerant of people who (hopefully) did not harm to begin with, this person was no longer protected by the social contract.
More directly, there's levels, and responding to immoral actions in an immoral action can harm you and others that aren't the intended target

This is a hard question to me because of the idea of for me at least, Having the name be known to avoid the company and not support them, Moral, The name being released so people can harass the person even if they are not a good person is Immoral.

Does an immoral action excuse the fact that this tweet has just potentially exposed him to further/more severe immoral action?
If someone had done this to an American flag and screamed something about Iranian school children, would you have the same stance?
In either case, the person associates a symbol with an immoral action, even if that symbol means something entirely different to most other people. Is it fair to put them at risk of physical/long-term harm because of the way they treated a symbolic piece of cloth?
6
u/Low-Lifeguard-3455 13h ago
What you say has some truth to it. However as the event was told to us by this post. The man came into a business for the sole reason to destroy private property and spew right wing slop at the people working there for no other reason than because he wanted too, yeah no he can go to Hell. I would have called the police on him, not because specifically because of it being a pride flag, but because he is disturbing the peace and destroying private property, and is clearly disturbed and possibly a threat to the safety of the people working at the business. Same as the person in your example about the American flag and Iran.
2
u/BrockObarnerLybian 13h ago
Fair, and I would take much less issue with calling the police than putting vague “justice” in the hands of internet strangers.
I don’t know that the post implied that he ONLY came in to do that though. I interpreted it as he was buying something at the register and started being a dick

There's a difference still: he chose to take these actions while using a truck with identifying info on it intended for public view. The point of the truck is to advertise the business, and this is a form of advertisement. It's totally fair game to note whatever is on the truck and spread it.

Immoral to damage someone else's property and disrupt their work without any reasonable provocation. Immoral to dox them as a form of retaliation. Two wrongs don't make a right, especially since OP never explicitly said that this information was publicly available.

Morality of allowing hate to spread?
Difficult. I mean I hate activists and woke people. At least the ones who riot, loot, commit arson, assassinate political figures, celebrate their deaths, and then have the audacity to think they can take the moral high ground.
Violence and murder are not justified. Charlie Kirk was always willing to debate, so the people who attempt to use the Paradox of Tolerance to justify his death have no clue how stupid they look.
I understand their intentions are good.
The Egalitarian Pluralistic worldview is impossible to achieve. It’s a paradox.
People with this worldview believe in equality. They believe there should be no hierarchy.
However, they ALSO believe that their worldview is superior to all other worldviews.
That is NOT equality. THAT is hierarchy.
They claim to value pluralism. They believe that all people from all cultures and all walks of life should be welcomed. Unless you disagree with them. Then they Tre you like a pariah. Especially if you’re conservative or Christian.
The whole thing is one big performative contradiction. They are hypocrites blind to their own hypocrisy.
I think that’s probably why they seem to have this insane Actor-Observer Bias, but hey, humility is a virtue. Why cultivate virtue when you can just virtue signal?
1
u/CuteResolution5538 14h ago
Moral. No one called for violence, just pointing out who this douche is. If he loses business from it, that’s capitalism. He expressed himself, assaulted staff (yes assaulted, an act intended to create harm or cause fear of harm) and they didn’t even call the police. He had his free “speech” moment, now everyone else gets to have theirs by disassociating with him as they please. The first amendment doesn’t protect you from damaging relationships with friends, family, or associates or from reputational or business losses for your sad emotional outbursts in public. Stop being weak. Hold your shit together.
1
u/Medium_Tell8679 14h ago
Im not sure what you're asking. The morality of him snapping the flag in half or you putting his business out there to get it canceled?
Its illegal to take your property and destroy it, even a simple flag. Next time you can just file a police report. Putting someone else's name out there to be canceled often backfires on you.

If they don't take measures to reprimand him then blast them.

You have to assume the original story is accurate to justify the actions taken. If it was true, then justified and the guy was a douche.
But since we see so many half truths and lies on the internet from people with an agenda, I don't assume it was true without evidence. This story seems like a lie. Random guy zeros in on a small flag, rips up flag, then also happens to hit other trigger topics for the left? Sus.

Both immoral. You shouldn't damage property and yell at people. However exposing a company to possible widespread outrage and the damage that could cause to the business and other employees due to 1 persons poor behavior is imo even worse. Unless its the owner, your possibly going to cause damage to someone else's company and other employees livelihoods due to 1 persons poor behavior they had no control over.
