Morality of paying reparations but you have to renounce your citizenship and go back to Africa
Morality of descendants of slaves being offered $100,000 in reparations but additionally they must renounce US citizenship and get dropped in your choice of country in Africa. If you don’t accept you are still a citizen and nothing changes.

u/BusDriver213 1h ago edited 1h ago
That would be 4.9 trillion dollars in reparations max, it’s just not possible. If only 25% of African Americans accepted it would still be over 1 trillion dollars.
If you reduced the amount offered or made it somehow possible, most African countries would still not accept taking in the immigrants.
18
u/empty_graph 1h ago
$4.9 trillion. And that's all black people. Some are not descendants of slaves.

u/BreadDziedzic 1h ago
Liberia has a policy of granting any and all African Americans who want to immigrant there citizenship just for getting to the country and asking for it.
4
u/Pudddddin 1h ago
Just to be clear, it's not specific to African Americans, the law says anyone of "Negro" descent. IE it applies to people of African descent that are not American too

u/BreadDziedzic 1h ago
Ah, didn't know the exact language of it just always heard it in reference to the US.

I think everyone knows that it’s not possible. The question is, would it be moral?
1
1
u/AloneFarmer3138 1h ago
It's not mandatory in this theoretical but If it were it'd cost under 5 trillion for every African American to receive 100,000 so it would be comparable to the 2009 bailouts.
0
u/Income-Rude 48m ago
The cost is irrelevant.
I can’t go to your house and steal all your stuff and then at trial say. I can’t compensate BusDriver the cost would just be sooo high….
Besides 1 Trillion is not that high us gdp is 32T a year.
We’re talking about the labor exerted in the US over the course of hundreds of years. 1T would just be 1/32nd of the labor done in just 1 year. If that’s justice then it’s def at a bargain price.
Imagine running someone over and paralyzing them and rather than compensating them for having to suffer paralysis for the rest of their life you only have to compensate them for suffering paralysis for just 1 year. In the legal world that’s a big win.
-3
u/No-Examination4896 1h ago edited 1h ago
4.9 trillion dollars while the US has spent 1 trillion building and mainting ICBMs it has never used and is planning to spend 1 trillion buikding nuclear weapons it will never use in the next ten years alone
6
u/FlatHair8469 1h ago
Would you rather have a nuclear war so all those weapons were worth it?
Their purpose is deterrence
-2
u/No-Examination4896 1h ago
So we have to spend trillions of tax dollars on 'deterrence' while every other western country gets to spend tax on free public services, checks to its citizens, education, healthcare. Id rather risk it, maybe canada can pick up the slack and start soending their tax on deterence
3
u/Complete-Meet1992 1h ago
America isn't perfect but that has nothing to do with too much military. We have tons of unemployed people and almost everyone works a job that isn't really necessary. If we were more efficient we could double our military.
2
u/True-Anim0sity 1h ago
Lol yes, you know America picks up the slack for other countries too right? That's why they don't spend as much on defense/deterrence
1
u/FlatHair8469 1h ago
If thats your position, it’d be more rational to move to one of those other western countries, pay their high taxes, take advantage of the public services and still have a defensively strong US to return to if SHTF
21
u/No-Act-7928 1h ago
Immoral.
I didn’t do shit and now my tax money have to go to ‘reparation’ these guys?
1
u/Pudddddin 1h ago
I don't think the argument that you're paying for something you didn't have anything to do with necessarily makes it immoral
I've never used food stamps but I don't consider it immoral that I have to pay for it. On the other hand, I think it's immoral to force taxpayers to bail out corpos who gamble and lose. So the key factor over whether it's moral or not must lie somewhere else than the actual act of forcing people to give money
2
u/Monterenbas 53m ago
You don’t pay for food stamps because you use it, you pay for food stamps because it’s cheaper to feed starving people than to police them.
0
u/Pudddddin 47m ago
Is it moral to use taxpayer money for this outright, regardless of whether the taxpayer agrees with the idea that its more "worth the cost" to fund food stamps than policing? If so, then the argument over whether something is moral or not must be determined by something other than the act of paying money, that's the point I'm making
OPs post is immoral for a lot of reasons, I just don't think "I'm paying for something that has nothing to do with me" is a very strong reason
2
u/Monterenbas 23m ago
The point is, you pretend that you don’t benefit for foodstamp, but you do, tho not by using them directly.
0
u/Pudddddin 9m ago
You could say this about literally anything funded by taxes, so then it must stand to reason that the collection and spending of taxes in itself can't be a determinating factor in morality
I mentioned I think it's immoral to bail out corpos that I don't have anything to do with via my tax money, but these bailouts often prevent people from becoming unemployed, and an increase in unemployed people is bad for the economy, and bad for me. The reason I think it's immoral to bail out these companies is because it simply encourages the behavior long term, bail outs aren't a "real" solution for the problem and the economic impacts of those bailouts tend to also negatively impact the economy at large.
I can make the same argument food stamps wise, if I'm saying that paying for food stamps makes sense morally to me even though I don't use it because it reduces crime in the society I live in, I could also say that it's immoral because it doesn't address the root causes that led this person to be food insecure in the first place.
I see this as pretty much "is giving homeless people money moral"? Not enough info to determine on its face
1
u/Please-dont_downvote 40m ago
Easy for you to say when it’s my money that’s going into your pocket.
1
u/Pudddddin 33m ago
Living in a shared modern society makes "taxation is theft" a political argument rather than a moral one
1
u/BillCarson12799 1h ago
We’re currently living in and benefiting from a country whose infrastructure was built by slave labor. All of our modern achievements were almost literally built on their shoulders.
The whole “why would the descendants get the money, they were never enslaved” angle would probably work better if African-Americans weren’t still suffering from systemic racism, lack of generational wealth, and political repression.
-1
u/Please-dont_downvote 38m ago
Really? Slaves built the IPhone? Slaves built the Empire State Building? All our modern achievements were not built on the backs of slaves.
2
u/BillCarson12799 31m ago
Slaves built the infrastructure needed to build the infrastructure needed to make stuff like iPhones and the Empire State Building, yes. Or just, like, the food needed for the country to not starve to death. That would have been a pretty prohibitive roadblock for national development.
-3
u/whyrusosensitive 1h ago
You benefit from it to this day if your ancestors lived in the US during slave times.

I'm broke, wasn't given a proper chance to finish high school, don't know my father, get pulled over all the time, drive a shitty car with no AC, work construction pouring concrete in 20' trenches and then I get to come on reddit and see way more successful whiners talking about how I am benefiting from and somehow privileged by my family immigrating here 100 years ago because they were white, even though they were put down constantly, struggling to keep up to the point where my familial name is about to be extinct.
How about we focus on the class war instead of whatever made up BS you are trying to put on innocent people, just because they are a certain color?

32
u/turboninja3011 1h ago
The logic somewhat holds.
The descendants of slaves got a way better life than they would have in the country of origin of their parents.
So if they still demand reparations it only makes sense that they give up the benefits they gained.
Otherwise that benefit is the reparation
8
u/Income-Rude 42m ago
How do you know that?
The labor exerted by slaves was the foundation of the us economy for hundreds of years. Def the foundation of the south.
Before being a manufacturing powerhouse the us made its money through agriculture…. That means work done by the slaves.
Of all those people had been doing work in west Africa over the course of all that time they presumably would have created the same results there.
The reason the us is comfortable to live in is because of the economic foundations built by people who lived decades before us. A major contingent of that labor was done by slaves AND people who were unconstitutionally disenfranchised and marginalized under Jim Crow.
You don’t get to take the fruits of slave labor and pat yourself on the back and tell the descendants of the people who created those fruits that you did them a favor and that their lives are better because of how benevolent you are. That is psychotic at best.
9
u/masochistpupper 1h ago
That just sounds insane to me “we kidnapped and enslaved your people for generations and continue to oppress you to this day, but if you want us to make it up to you, you can’t have any of the nice shit you fought tooth and nail for two centuries for!”
2
u/True-Anim0sity 1h ago
They werent kidnapped or enslaved or fought for anything tho? That was all other people who 99.99% are dead

u/SpaceLuxor 1h ago
So in regards to black history we should celebrate only the white people who saved them? Which was only possible because white people had the power and black people were literal slaves or second class citizens and could make no institutional change by themselves? What is the point you're making? Should black people not be celebrated at all for anything in regards to emancipation or civil rights?

>The descendants of slaves got a way better life than they would have in the country of origin of their parents.
In this hypothetical situation where the children’s ancestors were never slaves, that sort of implies that the Atlantic slave trade never happened. If so, and we also assume that the colonialism of Africa also never happened, nor subsequently all of the lasting damages to Africa’s political stability and resource exploitation that it caused. Without those factors present, it’s entirely possible that Africa, or at least several parts of it, could have industrialized into prosperous nations by the modern day. At the very least, the possibility couldn’t be ruled out.
>So if they still demand reparations it only makes sense that they give up the benefits they gained.
That’s like kidnapping someone, going to their house and ripping out all of the furniture, valuables, and copper wiring, then, 10 years later, handing them a check for like $50k as compensation for the kidnapping and giving them an Uber ride back to the aforementioned copper wire-less, burglarized, dilapidated house.
1
u/bloomingdeath98 21m ago edited 17m ago
I’m not going to argue that the slave trade never happened, and in fact argue that it absolutely happened, as the slave trade regarding those that descend from Africa flourished because it was those from Africa selling other people of Africa to white peoples. Other African tribes did the capturing and selling of other African tribes to the whites. I highly doubt it’d have changed anything at all for industrialization given the only difference being that there’d just be a higher population of people in Africa who would only have been enslaved to other African tribes rather than shipped off to America to be slaves to colonists instead.
Edit: also, colonization aside, we all know no country tends to avoid grabbing as much power as they can in other lands less developed, so it is ridiculous to assume grabbing political and resource power via colonization wouldn’t happen. The only thing you could judge to make it be differing for how things in Africa turn out different is how the peoples of Africa directly act and respond, which their actions were taking and selling slaves to whites.
1
u/BillCarson12799 19m ago
…You know there was more to african colonialism than the slave trade, right?
1
u/bloomingdeath98 15m ago
Are you talking about African nations doing the colonization, or that people set up colonies in Africa? Because I did an edit literally as you replied with this, so I could address their point of colonization

u/Caelus-9 1m ago
At the point of 'We now have to make up for not only slavery, but any harm our country has ever done', we've kind of created an absurdity.

Countries like Haiti were threatened with war crimes for reparations, for generations Taking between 21-115 billion dollars, up to 80 percent of Haiti budget
A pure evil action
It is okay for former slave colonies to ask for restitution
5
u/turboninja3011 57m ago edited 40m ago

Haitians live measurably worse due to unjust acts of French and others in the past.

u/SpaceNemo13 54m ago
I'll try to explain it better for you. It has been over 160 years since the end of slavery, almost 60 since the civil rights movment and we have people talking about reparations for slavery. What will happen if 10 years from now they want more reparations because it turned out it wasn't enough. 49.2 million of African decent live in the US and not all of them are direct descendents of slaves so should everyone receive reparations. So it's simple. Either stop dragging the chains of the past with you and move on or you can have your reparation money and we'll help you move back to the land of your ancestors so you can help develop the economy there. But let's be honest the ones who want the reparations the most won't be much help.

u/CapitalEmployer 1h ago
????? I think racist white people on the internet should really stop having opinions and delete their account for the greater good. This is one of the dumbest takes I have read in my life.
Descendants of slaves didn't get any benefit they got segregation, fake laws to imprison blacks to continue slavery legally, and a history of violent racism.
And also a lot of countries in Africa are currently in the state they are cause the descendants of slavers fucked the countries. The US alone has ran multiple coups in Africa when countries became too leftists and cared a bit too much about the interest of their population instead of the interests of conglomerates.
Otherwise that benefit is the reparation
BTW did white people get reparations then according to your logic since they still hold today a far better situation in those countries, are those schroedingers reparations?
3
u/Gmazing23 53m ago
My sub is slop now.
No one would accept that anyway.
What does 'go back to Africa' even mean? Most people have zero idea what their culture of origin was.
And reparations would be better spent as part of an investment package into impoverished communities than a direct cash infusion.

1
u/Income-Rude 1h ago edited 22m ago
The basis for reparations and for citizenship are two different things…
Reparations is to make one whole for a past harm and to try and make it so the harm never happened.
The United States has birthright citizenship if you are born here you’re a citizen. Trump is the child of an immigrant the only reason he is a citizen is because he was born in America.
Why would receiving ones just due require them to denounce their citizenship?
Besides the basis of the post seems to be that the poster is highly invested in screwing over African Americans. In their mind if they cant get away with stealing their labor for free the least they should be able to do is alienate them from the society that benefitted that labor. The poster feels that if they are not getting something for free at the expense of another then their being robbed because their superiority is not being adequately recognized.
Entitlement like that is the mark of a weakling. They know they can’t compete on even terms so they are desperate to tilt the playing field in their favor.
It’s like why do Incels complain about ladies night at the club but Chad doesn’t? Because Chad actually gets laid, and the incel is mad and wants somebody to pay….
Pathetic

this money would be better spent on improving the infrastructure of Black-majority communities and neighborhoods most heavily affected by the legacy of slavery and a lack of generational wealth and opportunity. would Black communities be better off by being given $100k per person, but being deported, or by putting millions to billions of dollars into improving cities like Detroit, neighborhoods like Kensington (philly), etc, where the population is majority black but impoverished due to various reasons, both legacy of slavery and otherwise
2
u/ValitoryBank 39m ago
Kinda racist post here. Will deportation also apply to white Americans considering the country is stolen land? Their share of reparations would go to the native Americans, obviously.
Reparations isn’t just for the enslavement of African Americans but the centuries of continued abuse to enrich white america.
Immoral: reparations should be paid without deportation.

1
u/InitiativeEastern902 23m ago
Except they do get paid. A person working minimum wage in America has a better standard of living than most of Africa.
Plus it wasn't even this generation so your comparison doesn't work. It would be more similar to my great grandfather working in the mines with no labor protections or benefits and me benefiting by making a good wage with good benefits 2 generations later working in the same mine.
1
u/Unable_Kangaroo9242 49m ago
Yeah, then we have to keep paying them though. It would be far less expensive in the long run to give them a one time payment followed by the boot.

It was called the GI bill. Your grandpa def got his due for participating in the war. Cheap / free college at a time where the vast majority didn’t go. Cheap mortgages, access to healthcare services. Post ww2 america was a good time to be a vet for sure. Well at least a white vet.
Of course, the African Americans who fought, bled, and died, in battle with Japan and Germany were systematically blocked from being able to enjoy the benefits they were entitled to under the bill. So them and their kids they just kinda got screwed.
All this so one day his grandchild could grow up and talk about how entitled they think African Americans are on the internet.

1
u/Lord_Corves 1h ago
Daring today, aren't we? I mean, all things considered, trying to say whether this is moral or not seems like a mixed bag. I guess you could say as long as it's optional, but where would be the fun in that? Considering this isn't anything too insane, just extremely controversial, I'll say it this way. It's not practical, and it simply wouldn't work. First and foremost, there was an attempt at this a long time ago. You might have heard of this country, or maybe you never heard of it whatsoever. It's called Liberia. They gave a lot of former slaves and just black individuals who so happened to be free at the time, the opportunity to be given some money and move to Liberia, where they can in some way effectively make their own country, govern themselves, develop their own laws and rules, ideally free from any of the problems or baggage that would come from living in the US. And while for some there were good intentions, for others they were just hoping to get rid of a problem they thought was brewing. That being said, as far as I recall, Liberia is still very much a failed state. Instead of essentially building Wakanda, or at least a little America in Africa, it devolved into a hellhole. So, that didn't work out. And honestly, 100,000 per person... Yeah, that's not going to be practical by any stretch of the imagination. There's no way you would be able to get the reparation money without essentially bankrupting an entire country. The inflation caused by this sort of thing, for all the people who may accept this proposition, well, let's just say it this way. By the time they land in whatever country they choose, the money they're carrying will be worth less than Monopoly money. And perhaps, one more big impracticality comes down to this teensy-weensy fact that a lot of people apparently forget, especially in the US. Africa is not a country. It is a continent. It is filled with many different cultures, many different tribes, religions, ethnicities, cultures that go back hundreds, if not thousands of years before Europeans even set foot beyond the Sahara. Regardless of whatever ancestry black people in America will claim, and not wrongly so, they would still be foreigners in a foreign land. And hell, there's a good chance that even some of the cultures they might have derived from, simply don't exist anymore because they may have been wiped out. So, you have a bunch of people going to what essentially is a foreign land where regardless of their granted citizenship or not in that country, they'll be essentially treated as a foreign culture. You want an example of how this is currently going? You need only look at South Africa, where a lot of people that came from other African countries have pretty much been attacked, harassed, and forced out by the locals. So, yeah. And then of course, there's getting the individual countries to actually agree with this idea. So many impracticalities, so many points of failure. And at the end of the day, it just wouldn't work. Not even with the best of intentions.
1
u/Global-Map-12 1h ago
Why would I pay reparations just to go back to a country I never been to?

u/SoftAndWetBro 46m ago
That's the point of the hypothetical question.
You are given 2 choices: 1. Recognize you are a red blooded western American and refusing the state sponsored handouts built off of theft of the innocence.
- Being a short sided and degenerate reparations taker willing to go to a shithole country that would treat you like dirt.
The choice is pretty obvious.
1
1
u/Mega3000aka 1h ago
It sounds fair in theory but in practice there would be a lot of problems. Why would you pay for a person contributing to your country to stop doing it? Which country's citizenship would potential expats get when most African states wouldn't accept them? Does USA even have enough money for this?
Also I just don't see the point of paying reparations to descendants of repressed people in general, when almost everyone in the world is a descendant of some kind of a repressed group. Those resources would be better spent fighting present-day racism.
2
u/ThroawayJimilyJones 1h ago
"Does the US have enough money for that"
30 millions of afroamerican * 100K -> 3 trillions.
So around the war in afghanistan in term of cost.
1
u/Mega3000aka 58m ago
I supposed US probably has the money, but would it be a smart usage of resources to spend trillions only to reduce the amount of people contributing to the country?
1

Nope. Also a lot of people would be angry. The left for the whole "here's the money now go back to africa", and the right for having to pay 3 trillions in reparation.
But it's technically doable.

Contributing is a strong word. Those who want reparations tend to be a net negative to society. African Americans or more accurately Americans wouldn't take the hand outs period

In a vacuum, moral af.
However, the fact is that there is no one left who is still a decenant of a slave who is not also a decendant of a slave master and/or a free citizen who held no slaves. Not to mention the number of Black slave masters that existed from the start to the end of slavery in the United States. Then you also have to consider the many other persons who were enslaved at various points and in various ways, such as the many Natives as well as the imported "Chinese" (really a grouping of East Asian) labor that were treated to slave-like conditions.
The waters are too muddy to make this clean.

Countries which benefited from slavery should be obligated to improve the conditions in the countries hurt by it. If you pay an individual to try and make up for the systemic damage and personal damage caused by slavery, then you haven’t addressed the problem or the impact of slavery

Most of the countries who have been hurt by slavery have also profited from slavery. Slave were usually sold by neighborg. Today the descendant of the slave and the slave trader are often in the same country.
Also some country won't be able to pay. Algeria (well Alger) have been a slave hub (litteraly the base of their economy) for 1200 years. Have you seen Algeria? You think they can afford the bill?

Reparations are fine.
No one had a problem with reparations being paid to slave-owning families here in the UK.

I mean with such kind of money you can move to Africa and start remote working for a western company, can live somewhere in the capitals of Kenya for instance or Botswana

I’m pretty sure the pro black FBAs that demand reparations will not accept that deal because they are also racist towards Carribiean, African, British, South American black’s they have the tribalistic xenophobic mental illness.

Immoral. because it fails to actually rectify the sitation that creted the desire for reparations.

Forcibly taken from your home and also Forcibly sent back.
Giving money doesn't make that moral.
And if we are talking about america. You would have to send white people back also.

Every year we talk about reparations, we get further and further from anyone being alive that was actually involved, in any way. This is one of those things that should have been made right back in the day, when those responsible could have done so. You can’t undo history without a Time Machine.

Being involved is irrelevant, you still reap the benefits

Roughly 80% to 85% of all Americans trace their lineage to ancestors who arrived after the abolition of slavery in 1865, with post-1865 white immigrants alone making up about 50% of the entire U.S. population today. Which leads me to ask, who’s holding the bill? If the answer is the governments involved, they’d “give it to you” out of the taxes you pay.

If we have to give blackies over a trillion dollar in "reparations" I'd rather just make their fears come true and bring back enslavement

If a white person can prove they have an ancestor who was an enslaved individual do they get the $100,000?
