The number of legitimate medical conditions where wearing a mask would be problematic is so vanishingly small that anyone trotting out this excuse should be required to provide evidence from a doctor.

I’ve never encountered a single person yet with an actual medical reason to not wear a mask.

Only “my right” after enquiry.

I actually had one. I have severe eczema and the mask caused the moisture of my breath to stay on my skin and cause inflammation.

I still wore a mask. Because me having a rash and cracked skin in my face is still better than the potential harm I could have caused.

Those people were assholes.

I still wear a mask (the news is horrifically quiet about a new strain of COVID running wild right as flu season ramps up). I don't have eczema but I do have an aversion to fabric pressed against my face.

I bought plastic frames - 5 for around $10 - from evil amazon. They sit between my face and the mask. It barely touches my face, the fabric doesn't touch at all except on the far edges of my cheeks, and it doesn't get moist and icky inside.

I bought the plastic frames too thinking they’d be awesome. I had an allergic reaction that was worse than just the damage wearing the mask alone caused. Apparently I can’t win. I even tried frames made of several different materials, I reacted to all of them. So maddening.

For a few young kids with sensory issues- they could be excused if everyone else wore masks

But the adults who say ‘thay can’t breathe in them?’

Oh lordy- they need to be exercising more, or doing breathing exercises if a cotton mask is a problem. They would not fair well on a respirator if a cotton mask is too much.

Even in clinical settings children attempted to be brave and wore masks. Being better behaved than some adults.

I didn’t realize how childish some adults are until I entered healthcare.

I have Erythromyalgia. Wearing a medical mask rubbing against my very sensitive cheeks, plus my breath adding humidity can easily kicks off a flare-up that feels like a third degree burn on them. It doesn't stop for a long time after taking the mask off. I'd love to mask up on flights, but I hate taking a chance of facial pain. I have some soft cloth masks, but there's always thr possibility of setting off a flare-up with them too.

I'll still wear a mask when asked. No problem.

I could see it for severe respiratory or cardiac conditions where people have a reduced lung capacity or severe issues breathing in general (something like a severe case of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, for example), but this is going to be such an extreme corner case that expecting someone to provide proof should be a non-issue. Anything else I would just consider someone being a baby.

There's also the case that if it's bad enough that they have to be on an oxygen tank anyways, in which case the mask is a non-issue again. In any case, this is not something that should be left to self-diagnosis.

One more corner case, woman who had been grayped had ptsd, relived the experience of hand on mouth from the mask. I had seen one article way back and a quick google shows at least 3 cases...

To date, over 7.1 million people have died from COVID globally and over 1.2 million in the USA alone. The USA was losing people to COVID at a rate of roughly one 9/11-sized tragedy every week. If you can't have some consideration for public health, then by all means chalk it up to self interest, but pretty please with sugar on top: mask up during a pandemic. Or stay home, which I think everyone would prefer.

Tokyo has some of the most people living with nearly the highest population density on the planet. They didn't have any lockdowns. They didn't have nearly the same death rate from covid as most countries (including the US). They overwhelmingly masked up. Most of them were already doing it following previous coronavirus outbreaks that had affected southeast Asia. Masks work. Bitching about masks and refusing to comply with emergency health rules kills people.

Chances are the daughter was, like, fourteen and put on her mask without complaint when asked to, because she understood that wearing a mask wasn't just an aesthetic or political choice even if her mom didn't.

I worked at IKEA through most of the outbreak. It really made me hyper aware of how stupid and selfish MOST people are. If it wasn't a unmasked boomer Karen/Kevin spouting facebook quotes, it was some jackass who ripped apart their entire kitchen THEN came into order cabinets and couldn't comprehend how the shutdown of the global supply chain meant we were sold out of most options for an unforseeable amount of time. Right before I quit one of my elderly female co-workers was assaulted by a grown man because he was mad about not being able to get what he wanted. Management did absolutely nothing about it, didn't even call the cops. Walked out as soon as I heard about it and since then, those same people have only gotten worse. Louder, more hateful, violent, entitled, and purposefully ignorant.

There are some decent, or straight up amazing people out there, but they are the rare exception.
