I was getting ready for work. My friend called me and said there had been an explosion at the WTC. I turned on the news as they were playing footage saying a plane had hit. I wondered how that could happen on such a clear day. Then the second plane hit and I knew we were under attack. I was chilled to the bone. I will go to my grave with the memory.

Amazingly everyone from the unit survived. The subject Antonios "Tony" Benetatos was on his day off and reported for duty after the initial response. he and a few other off duty firemen hopped on a pick up truck and assisted the evacuation effort. He’s currently a lieutenant in the FDNY

I was sitting in psychology class in college. Another professor ran in, told us to turn on the tv, and we watched after the second plane hit. Classes were dismissed and folks were sprinting to their vehicles, as the third and fourth plans were going down, I thought WWIII was upon us. I was 18.

I remember being in third grade and just knowing something wasn’t right by how my teacher was acting. She was a younger teacher so she was still all zaney with everything, including with attendance. But she came in and very quickly did attendance, went out to grab a tv cart and popped in a kids document on Beethoven.

One by one kids were leading the classroom and being called out. We had no knowledge of what was going on, just that kids were slowly being removed (in a town within fifty miles of NYC, we really had no clue unless an adult told us. Everywhere within 100 miles was up in arms over fears since Pennsylvania happened as well) fully thought we were slowly being taken out to be killed. No one would answer any questions, and it didn’t help that in my first grade year we had a bomb threat. Just a mess of a day till my mom got me and then took me home. Told me what happened to me and my sister, had us pray. Then I just played hey you pikachu

In my sixth grade class I remember feeling the same, only they rolled the tv in and put on the news. We were all dismissed before lunch and I just remember sitting in my living room with my parents watching it all day and my dad saying this will be war.

This was barely a second year in America for me. I didn’t know what the twin towers were or why it was such a big deal.

7th grade. We sat down in the classroom and watched the news together. I remember this day very well. What class it was. Who was there. It’s an out of body experience unlike any other when 9/11 comes around every year.

I feel so awful still. I was a teacher, in the UK. It was lunch time and I popped back to the office for some paper and my colleague asked if I'd heard that a plane hit one of the towers. I just thought small aircraft how awful and went back to get ready for class. Thought nothing else of it until I went home that evening and saw the news and just could barely comprehend what the actual reality was.

I was very similar. We were on holiday in Bali. Because of the time difference we were out in the evening, drinking wine, went back to our room, we were young, so we were NOT turning on the TV after a nice romantic meal...

Next morning, at least 12 hrs after the planes hit, we wandered down to the beach, people were talking about this event with a plane, "Oh ok, right...." Spent the day at the beach, got back to our room. Finally turned on the TV to see the horror. About 24 hours after it all happened.

We must have been some of the last "Westerners" to see the news. About a week later, the airports were open again for us to fly home, we flew first class, we could see the cockpit door from where we were sitting, we were given steak knives for the meal. it was a strange time.

We were at John's Hopkins (Washington DC) getting my son tested to see if he was still allergic to peanuts. The attacks were on TV in the hospital room.

We drove home to Pittsburgh through DC. We went right by the Shanksville (Somerville County) crash site on the PA turnpike at about 4:30 pm.

I was coming down from an all-night 2CT7 trip with a group of friends and another buddy came running into the house after just getting off work and was like, "y'all gotta see what just happened!", and turned on the news. We didn't think it was real.

I was heading to work, just about to get in my car when a friend calls on my Sprint Samsung SCH-3500 flip phone. "Did you see a plane hit the World Trade Center?" I head back inside and catch some news before heading to work. I worked for a large insurance company and they had these brand new drop down screens and projectors on each floor so they dropped them down and we watched. Then the second plane hit and we knew it wasn't an accident. Since the city where we were located was a major financial hub, they made the decision to send us all home for a few days just in case.

Hard to believe seeing the size of that hole and fireball anyone thought it was a commuter plane. I think it was hard to believe a commercial jet hit the building because pilots don’t do that and it was just unthinkable

I was walking home from chemistry at Purdue University. I had so many missed calls telling me to turn on the tv the second I got back to my dorm room.

One of the only times in my life I seriously had a hard time believing a current event was real. (Notwithstanding certain lunacies going on now. It just hit different back then.)

Oddly enough, I don’t remember a single other detail from that day, other than sitting on my couch alone and staring at the news.

I was in my living room had gotten out of the shower about to head to school and watched the second plane hit. I knew it was an attack immediately. But I lived in Iowa and knew nothing was going to happen in Iowa. It’s fucking Iowa. Anyways I headed to school.

I‘m from Germany. I was 14, my nephew was 1 year old. We were watching a zoo television show. I remember they were showing elephants when the broadcast was interrupted and the news came on. I stayed in front of that tv for the next 12 hours. I remember my mother crying. The world was changing right in front of us.

I was across the river watching from the Williamsburg, Brooklyn side. Saw the falling of the buildings too. It was unbelievable that they fell. It started as such a clear and beautiful day. Certainly never forget that.
