Building a data centre is costly, plus anything goes wrong you need people to actually be there.
Having a DC in the middle of nowhere will cost even more, and will be difficult to build plus hard to get to for workers. Environmental issues will also be a concern, i.e mud, rain.
They never will. It doesn’t have existing infrastructure to exploit. Unless the system is going to be 100% self contained, there’s no way they will offer up their own money to get infrastructure built.

That was the bit I was missing. The country is actively building infrastructure for these tech companies, so then yeah taxpayers get to foot the bill for tech to swoop in and destroy native land. That really sucks, I hope there’s a movement sooner than later to stop this. But a greedy government will stop at nothing to line their pockets.
Why would that be stopped? They're not actually destroying any natural reserves or anything, it's much better environmentally than building a factory or something and brings in foreign investment important for their economy.
Also, they're going to develop the region better for that investment so it'll be good for everybody else living there.
Data centers will actually suck the entire region dry of all water. You know, that liquid substance that all life is dependent on in one way or another?
Any that are fossil fuel powered or take from a electric grid that is fossil fuel powered are still huge sources of pollution associated with the mining and processing of said fossil fuels.
Mines, roads to mines, heavy industrial equipment(usually diesel), overburden rock, acid mine drainage, oil and gas wastewater, drill pads, pipelines etc.
They're huge energy consumers predominantly to produce AI slop and replace human workers and devalue human labor so that the wealthiest, least ethical, and most powerful humans can make money while externalizing the consequences on everyone else.
Consequences including pollution, downstream consequences of job losses, loss of human control of AI, AI powered scams, deep fakes, bot armies, AI weapons, and Orwellian Spyware like Flock, Axon, Palanter produce.
Its no surprise that Argentinas far right dipshit leader wants to shove that shit down his people's throats like right wing dipshit leaders are currently doing all over the globe.
Its just a rage bait article anyway. It would be nonsense to invest billions in infrastructure in a country known for instability, just to save some money on cooling.

We do need Nuremberg trials, if only because at Nuremberg the judges didn't accept "I was only following orders" and "I only nudged and winked, it was my underlings who made the actual decisions" weren't accepted as a legal defence.
But a legal defense for what? In this case they say to the Argentinan government "we want to buy your land for this specific purpose and we'll give you a bunch of money and it will create jobs" and the Argentinian government (which are supposed to represent the people) says "sounds good mate, go for it".
If anything the people who let them do it should be prosecuted for that, and really mostly for corruption if the money doesn't reach the people. But comparing tech CEOs to Nazis who executed a genocide is quite a stretch and honestly dilutes signifiance of the Nuremberg trials. It's like calling everything you don't like and is vaguely related to authority facism.

I’m not in favour of destroying habitats etc but I don’t want these near my house either. It makes sense to build some of these things in extremely deserted areas I think. But I wouldn’t trust these companies to do it in a reasonable way
Space is actually terrible for cooling. Sure space is cold, but the heat something produces needs to be exchanged through a medium which space is notably lacking. The heat from the data center would just get trapped and actually make cooling less efficient than if there was atmosphere.
Call me crazy, but I would think they would want the flat land where it's easier to build and closer to civilization, since they'll have to connect it to the power grid and internet.
You are right. So far they are planning building one in the city of Neuquen and another in Trelew.
Idk why people are speculating about buuild-outs in the middle of nowhere when the exact location of these planned data centers in public information and they are verly loudly announcing they want cities with all the infrastructure needed.
"Undeveloped" is a loaded word. It speaks of land that is not commercialized as being a waste. Maybe we should call it "land that is in a natural state." Any other ideas?

Hope they don’t plan on hosting US data. No entity with private data (healthcare, IP, anything) is putting their data where US privacy laws don’t apply.

Fun fact: They are planning building one in the city of Nequén, named after the Nequén river, which in the Mapuche language means "water that has strength". Well I don't know how you say "water that used to have strenght before they stole it from us and now comes scarce and full of poisonous industrial residue" in Mapuche
If you think trials will solve this you haven't been paying attention to the Epstein debacle. You are asking the wealthy to punish the wealthy and they only do that if it affects their profits.

You guys can't have it both ways. You can't be mad that they are in your city, and also be mad that they are trying to develop outside of the city. You are consuming their products, and mad that they are investing in the product you are consuming. Get over yourselves.
