Doctors and nurses look stuff up all the time. You think they remember every damn thing off the top of their head? Sometimes they need a refresher. This is way more common you think. And lots of places have a hospital only playlist with videos from other verified doctors. Theyre not watching some randos video. Before video they'd refer to medical books. But cant always have a book on hand. Youtube you can watch anywhere. Much denser form of info. All medical books combined into 1 and fits in your pocket.

Dental assistant checking in to say it happens in the dental office, too. Most recently our lab tech youtube'd how to change one shade of a crown to a very specific shade.

We would not bat an eye if they were consulting a big medical book for stuff. Yet chances are those books are out of date. No institution keep buying the lastest edition of all the books they have. Yet people throw a stink when doctors look for resources online that wiuld be more likely to be up to date. Might be videos from a hospital channel so it might be legit.

It’s also wayyyy safer. You don’t want an attending do a lateral canthotomy on you without a refresher when they did one 12 years ago in medschool. You want their knowledge to be fresh

Years ago -about 40 - I had to get a tooth extracted. I got scheduled with the new dentist. I warned him novocaine doesn't always work on me, and sure enough it didn't. So I shrieked and he put the drill down, left the room and came back about 10 minutes later and gave me another. I think it took 2 more to numb me. What I think he did was ask my usual dentist, who told him yes, this was a real thing with me. Nowadays I'm sure he'd Google it.

Yeah this is insane. Youtube has just as much potential for valid information as any other source. Imagine complaining because your doctor was reading a book. Presumably they are referencing genuine informational videos rather than just click bait pop health videos and they are knowledgeable enough to know the difference.

Whether you're doctor or it professional, half the education is teaching you to both learn on the job and filter out the bullshit from the good advice.

The other half of the education is the hard skills you absolutely fucking need before you should be allowed to even do the job

Not to mention the field changes everyday and theres new procedures and protocols. Also gotta make sure the drugs or medications they use won't interact negatively with each other. Like the humble grapefruit and certain antibiotics can cause serious problems.

I occasionally fix computers on the side. Had one person act surprised and slightly irritated that I didn't know right of the bat what happened to their computer or how to fix it. No man, there's over a billion different viruses and malicious programs out there. I don't know every one of them. My first stop is Google lol

Hardware i can do with ease most of the time unless its custom water cooled and ill refer to a guide, math's and shit for bending pipes. Ill install whatever operating system and get that working. Im good at dealing with video games and most general computer use as well. But if its a system error im referring to a guide, if cant fix that, im getting someone else

I'll give system errors a shot and try to keep an OS in place but honestly sometimes it's easier to just wipe everything.

I went to the doctor for cracked ribs once. I looked over and he had googled ribs and the top search is an ad for chilis baby back ribs. I laughed so hard it at that.

That thing that they say about procedures "observe one, do one, teach one" does not sound like enough experience time to comfortably do something. I'd be looking up anything I hadn't done regularly if it was me.

For any technical job, you’re looking things up a lot. People with non-technical jobs see House and think it’s like that.
