I did the same as a mechanic, and one thing to consider is that someone trained in the field can usually spot bullshit. Sometimes id have to look around for a while and differentiate crazy shit from actual useful information.

Did their non-conventional methods work in the end usually even if you knew there was a more proper way to do the task? Honestly curious, I don't know shit about engines but wish I did.

Not a mechanic but was tasked with changing a truck tire at work once. I YouTubed it to make sure I didn’t fuck it up. I had only owned cars up to this point and had never changed a pickup truck tire. Just wanted info on jack points. Boss comes out, thinks I’m playing on my phone and fires me on the spot. I show him the video, as it’s playing. He stands his ground.

The Pikachu face that he had when the EPA showed up a week later to talk about the oil he was dumping down the drains was epic. Fuck you, Gerald.
