Am a doctor and also google shit all the time, mostly things that I’m 90 percent sure about and wanna make sure I’m 100 percent sure about

When I was in school for engineering I was flat out told that after graduation I needed to have all of these equations written on a clip board I carried around so that I would never get them wrong. Then I was told that would be cheating in school and that I had to memorize them.

The only way to never have a mathematical error is to use a calculator for even basic addition and to plug it into an equation that is directly in front of your face.

I'm a nurse and I often tell my students when they're doing their working practices that it's better to know where to find the info you need rather than trying to memorize it.

The databases we often use get updated rather frequently.

And being familiar with the layout of these few databases is going to help you a lot.

Just don't Google "what is a code blue"....I know of a case someone did this and was terminated. Little extreme or a case to do that, but going to probably guess they had several fumbles or someone just wanted them gone.

Exactly, when I was doing my degree and masters, I made an entire notebook full of equations with full explanations, pictures and notes, and a key for finding stuff.

When I was doing my undergrade dissertation, I made yet another note book with photographs and explanations l, working and general musings. My tutor liked that one enough that it went missing for several months after I handed my work on for marking. Turns out he was using it as a prop and example for other students.

Lots of people try and keep all their notes on a tablet ect, but a fat note book is extremely convenient. Why burn up your brain trying to remember this shit when you can have it on paper right in front of you.

You can't lack this much common sense. A doctor is smart in his field just like any specialist is in theirs.

And being a doctor doesn't automatically make you smart.

Yeah IDK why this is such a problem. I work in tech and google things anyone should be certain about just to make sure I'm not missing something or going too autopilot. It never hurts to look something up to prepare.

When I work on my vehicle or on something around the house … I still look shit up even though I’ve been doing it forever now. You never know if there’s new tricks or better ways to do a task. I’m still willing to learn! Also, work in tech!

I'm a bicycle mechanic and YouTube shit at times. Mostly how different brakes are bled, because some types have really effing ridiculously elaborate procedures compared to others. You want your professional to do things correctly, don't you? Let them use this thing called "the internet" to make sure they give you what you need and/or paying them for.

I want my doctor to make sure they're 100% about something rather than 90% sure. It's my (or my son's) health we're talking about and there's so much to know and so much that changes over time (new medicine, new information, better treatments). I want my doctor to want to learn what's best for me.

I'm a lawyer who represents physicians. Often, people think you guys should have encyclopedic memories of every aspect of your practice, which of course is a crazy expectation. It's what leads to a lot of complaints about care and decision making.

If much rather have a doc who takes the time to double check something, than has such a big ego they go with their gut.

As a doctor what are your thoughts on ai? I feel like ai is filling the internet lurking the cloud with actual centuries of human knowledge. I feel like ai needs to be made illegal.

LLMs are such a great tool. Instead of asking to make them illegal you should ask to make them more accurate, to compensate creators for content, to make them safe to use, etc.

The same way as any specialist. They know their field and can detect bullshit because they've not only studied it for literally many years but practiced it as well.

Of course a slightly medical literate person can also detect bullshit but not as much as an actual doctor, and now think of your average person, and realize they wouldn't be able to tell at all.

If doctors are using Google to look for medical advice then tell me why every doctor I've ever seen says not to look stuff up on the internet? I mean, I'm not stupid. I know how to properly research. I don't go looking for advice on social media; I use trusted medical resources.

They can decipher the bullshit immediately. You, generally, can't with any high level of confidence.

Same goes for any industry that requires a strong working knowledge to operate in... the stakes, overall, are just higher in medicine. Mistakes can lead to serious problems.

If your hospital system has some AI sub, that's also amazing. It's not always perfect but it's really good at finding good sources to confirm anything and it's far quicker than searching google directly.

I think most docs do this. It’s too easy not to double check in this day and age. Even if I’m right 99% first time it’s better safe than sorry when doing things so quickly because of how many patients we need to see.

Yeah but do you google shit right in line of sight of a patient youre treating while treating them? You can google stuff the 5 minutes you have between patients or face the PC away

But man this is definitely a doctor prank Id pull: increase font size to 72pt and google "what is a doctor" or "what is cancer"

Old sysadmin here. I know my runbooks and procedures by heart by now. But if they need to go right, I'll still take a look at the documentation and have a second person spot me.

This also led to a hilarious situation last year, as we had a new team member and where she came from, she was used to not be taken as a full team member and having to fight for every single shred of recognition. After a month on the team or so, we had a huge outage and she was tasked as copilot for 2 people to spot the correct execution of tasks.

At some point, she just said stop, because there was a slight deviation, and some combined 50 years of experience across a few people just stopped and started checking her concerns out. It was correct, and she had a mild culture shock from that, haha.

I’m a vet and do the same- the only thing I google more is how to spell things for the chart- doesn’t matter I’ve written it probably thousands of times, I’m using google to spell check tarsarophy into tarsorrhaphy every time.

Exactly. Besides there are a lot of YouTube channels run by major hospitals and health systems with some of the best experts in the world giving clear up to date information. There’s a big difference between someone squeezing an abscess in their bathroom sink and a surgeon in a hospital demonstrating a procedure.
