Have you tried monetizing sitting under a tree? You could produce a video of you sitting under the tree or live stream it. You might be able to get sponsored content related to trees. Or anything as long as they pay. But the weather might not be great every day. Maybe you should move it to an office or studio and produce sponsored content videos there. And when the weather is nice produce prank videos in public.
Oops! Turned your hobby into being a terrible person.

The thing a lot of the hypercapitalists haven't quite cottoned on to yet is when there are so many people making money by doing what amounts to just living their life, that's a powerful argument in favor of UBI.
Especially when you consider how many of those people have made eye watering amounts of money by just living their life, but streaming it, and in the process corrupting the societal fabric through spreading their absolutely braindead antisocial behaviors.
Imagine if the people making public benefit media fifty years ago were transported into the present day what they would think - without the gradual decline if existing in this toxic milieu as it went from positively selecting good role models to whatever the fuck we've been doing
https://giphy.com/gifs/sczSE6UkynwiY
They would think we're fucking insane, not because we've given the tools of "free speech" to literally every person possible, but because we are either allowing "the market" (aka people with enough computing power to manipulate what gets traction) or are lying about how things become popular, and either way, what we're doing is amplifying the absolute last people who should have a large influence on society. Absolutely stupid decision making.

I was explaining to a colleague a few weeks ago that my day starts when I get up, gets paused when I leave for work, then resumes when I get home. I consider the job to be the "waste of time". It's necessary, but if I had a choice I wouldn't spend my time making money for someone else.
And believe it or not I actually do like my job. I just like my time being my own far, far more.

u/Temporary-Cucumber35 4h ago
I said the exact same thing about my job to my coworker last week. "My day starts when i get off of work at 4"

u/PhoenixApok 3h ago
I like my job too. It gives me zero personal satisfaction, but its physical enough that I don't feel lazy, and listening to music and audio books all day keeps the mind occupied.
But it is literally "I trade my time here so I can do everything else"

yeah no one is worried about an after noon under a tree, or family time
"wasting time" is spending 4 years of your 20's drinking every night and watching cartoon porn in your shitty apartment, getting fat and not being able to get a girlfriend.
enjoy the afternoon off - no one gives a shit

u/Ok-Primary2176 8h ago
This is what saddens me when I hear new-age parents talking about things like grocery shopping as a "waste of time" and opt for online shopping instead, or instruct each one in the family to shop alone during different days on a schedule
I wonder what they use that saved time for. If it's doing another family activity - great. But I can't help but think all of this saved time just goes into video games or social media
Its also not so much about what you do but how you do it and the fact that you do it together. Something as simple as grocery shopping can become an adventure if you want it to

It’s hard to get my youngest out of the house, but when I succeed I usually spoil the crap out of him. My oldest is game to go where ever with me because he knows he’ll get something out of it. Do my best to spoil both of them as much as I can
Try to treat every time we go out as an adventure

Some people feel offended by the wasted time they perceive from others being alive. They make it their mission to stop others from wasting that time. Apparently

Wait until you retire and people keep asking you how you fill your day. I pretty much do whatever I feel like doing and most times it is not “productive”.

Same and amen. It's amazing how many people can't remotely grasp the concept of not constantly striving for more stuff, more money, more praise, more...idk, everything. It's interesting to watch their frozen faces as they struggle to process the 1000 kHz tone pulsing through their brains when I tell them I didn't invest the day fervently clawing and breathlessly striving for X. Assuming one's basic needs are met, less isn't more. Less is better. Less is peace.

Time is considered wasted when it’s something else we’d rather be doing. It isn’t actually related to productivity. It’s like I wanted to watch a tv show but I needed to mow my lawn. But then I discovered my lawn mower needed to be fixed. Hours later it’s fixed and the grass is done. It’s now time for bed. I was productive even though I might feel like I wasted my time.

Easily amused but lack the imagination to do nothing. Dig a hole, stack rocks, anything is better then nothing at all. Nothing to do can be a form of punishment. It's not for everybody.

u/Obvious-Lake3708 11h ago
It's because we need money for housing, food, and the freedom to spend 2pm under a tree. I'd be homeless otherwise and no being alive is no where near enough to justify an afternoon. I'll take death today over another afternoon

Nah wasting time is not just not converting time into money, it's about converting into nothing at all. If you under a tree to unwind and relax and clear your head then maybe that's not waste time. When we come home and doomscroll watching the equivalent of 200 ads for an hour and a half without remembering anything and just keeping our brains idling, that's wasting time for me.
It's time I could have spent working for money, sure, but it's also time I could have spent developing a skill or hobby, learning, spending time with family, reading, anything.
Some activities really do waste time.
1
u/EJX-a 8h ago
I've never interpreted wasting time this way. To me, wasting time means your doing something to no effect. You get nothing out of it.
And im not talking about making money or improving yourself. Im talking about going and making memories, enjoying a hobby, chilling with friends. Even just napping for a bit to recharge.
Wasting time to me is doomscrolling a whole weekened away. Watching tv all day, day after day, week after week, as your whole life slips by.
Taking a moment to enjoy the world and things around you is one thing, enveloping your world in a single source of dopamine to stave off boredom is something else entirely.
Stop and smell the roses, yes, but remember there is a whole lot more on this journey than just roses.

Try to find something in between to do I guess for most people.

You could hold a piece of atring to become a weather analyst. If the string moves, it's windy. Moves more, it's stormy. Gets wet - rain.
Enjoy earth's rotation with earth's weather.

u/WhiteSnakeShinobi55 2h ago
This is one of those things that sounds really deep until you realize it's absolutely silly. "Wasting time" for most people is when they have responsibilities that they aren't living up to. Relaxation and rest isn't a waste of time. Doom scrolling when you have a paper due absolutely is.
Eg. I tore my shoulder 11 months ago. I was cleared for exercise 4 months later. 5 months after that I finally got back to exercise and thought "man, it'll take me like 5 months to get back to where I w-..." I realized that the time bad already passed. Literally if I had started when I could have I'd have been there by now, the time passed either way but I wasted it.

Time is most definitely wasted when you spend it all doom scrolling instead of reading or getting a hobby that would be more fulfilling in the long run
5
u/Firegh0st 9h ago
Well, I get what you want to say and generally I agree there might be more healthy hobbies, but if you enjoy doom scrolling, is that really wasted for you then? Someone said once "the time we a enjoy wasting is not wasted time".
-2
u/Traditional-Buy-2205 8h ago
but if you enjoy doom scrolling, is that really wasted for you then? Someone said once "the time we a enjoy wasting is not wasted time".
Things need to be done in life if you actually want to enjoy your life as a whole. You need to eat, drink, have a clean place to stay, have resources like money, maintain relationships with your family, have a social life, have a healthy and fit body, etc.
Life is not just about enjoying the current moment, it's also about setting yourself up for the future and making sure that things overall are functioning properly.
Those things require work. And if you're putting off this work for the sake of enjoying doom scrolling, then you're just degenerating your life and setting yourself up for misery later. That's why we call it "a waste of time".
2
u/Firegh0st 8h ago
I think you jumped the shark a bit.
The initial article was about enjoying a relaxed afternoon without doing anything productive.
You come in here as the exact person that this article is for.
I agree that one should put effort into things if they want to achieve something, but one should also be aware that it's perfectly fine to rest and give your mind a pause from the pressure and stress. Note, I said "pause" meaning stopping for a moment and then resuming to what you were doing afterwards.
Life is about struggling, yes, but there is a reason why we need sleep. Our physical body needs rest. The same applies to one's mind, having a hobby and doing something you enjoy helps you relax your mind. Some watch a movie, some meet friends, some might watch the news etc. finally, some might enjoy watching shirt videos and articles on their phone to "zone out" so to speak.
Why would you try and stop someone from enjoying how they spend their free time, if it doesn't affect your life in the slightest?
0
u/Traditional-Buy-2205 7h ago
I was mostly commenting on the "the time we a enjoy wasting is not wasted time" quote, which is blatantly incorrect.
A lot of people have screwed up something in their lives precisely because they put too much value on enjoying the present moment at the expense of something else. It's a story as old as humanity.
Why would you try and stop someone
Oh please, give me a break and spare me these idiotic assertions. I'm not "trying to stop" anyone. I'm commenting and discussing.
Sharing my opinions about X doesn't mean I'm trying to stop people from doing X, for christ's sake.

The biggest luxury in life is to be able to consider time spent earning money as wasted time.
-1
u/Traditional-Buy-2205 8h ago
Entropy. Things degenerate if you don't put in the conscious effort to maintain them.
If you don't eat, you die. If you don't drink, you die. If you don't clean your house, it turns into a disgusting mess. If you don't maintain and repair your items, they break down and become useless. If you don't acquire resources, you run out of them. If you don't train your body, it atrophies.
So, no, "simply being alive" isn't enough.
