two things that I find interesting about this.
first of all, Don't name it as a place that folk might thing it's the bridge for a new life 💀.
Secondly on a personal note, I have seen that reassuring messages and such are bound to make people more aversive and push you away when they are distressed.

They should try the opposite and have a sign that says “do it”

💀 💀. i doubt that will work either
during such emotionally stressful moments, being quiet and comforting can go a long way than trying to dismiss their feelings and reassure them regardless.
this is my personal opinion ofc from what I have accumulated interacting with people.

Sometimes “everything will be okay” is the last thing you want to hear when nothing feels okay

u/TheFrostBeard 46m ago
exactly, "everything wil be okay" and "I know how you feel" are the things you wanna hear the least.

Performative. They want to feel better about themselves without taking on any of the emotional load from the sufferer.

Yeah, a lot of those messages were a mess; especially the earlier ones. I honestly don't know what they were thinking. Not only did a lot of them sound empty and indifferent, a lot of them made it feel like they were actively mocking you, or even offering you escape from your situation. Clearly it was written by people who had no idea what depression was like.

u/TheFrostBeard 26m ago
I haven't read the messages but I can imagine how they must have been.
It's a shame that people don't yet realize how much difference a few words can make for someone 😔.

There's some studies proven that put trigger warnings only make things worse, for example.

I feel like this is one of those where you have to widen the aperture. Those suicides would have happened anyway but would have been more dispersed. The bridge became a beacon so the suicides more concentrated. Most areas eventually have suicide hotspots.

u/TheFrostBeard 43m ago
oh that's a very valid point, plus I'm sure the bridge renovation came with media publicity which put it in the limelight but for all the wrong reasons.

When money is put into a flashy show that makes the contributors feel better about themselves, rather than focus on the problems that lead to people jumping off bridges to begin with. 👍

That's a lame way to try to fix a problem. You need to think outside the box! I would add a small kebab kiosk with a hairy talkative Turkish man who calls everyone his friends and offers steep discounts or even some freebies for people who seem down. Sponsored by the city to make sure that every potential jumper has a chance for a quick chat and a meal.

A shawarma with a cake slice with a very friendly Turkish man and it drops to zero

Or a Turkish ice-cream seller who gets them all annoyed enough that they run away?

When you’re suicidal you don’t want corny platitudes. You want a reason to keep going that directly correlates to your life, in a way that feels personal and meaningful.

u/bachintheforest 44m ago
Yeah as someone who’s just about been there, when you’re majorly depressed, seeing some generic impersonal message like “tomorrow will be brighter” or “the world is better with you in it” is actually more infuriating than anything. I’m in a good place now, but I am very careful not to say stupid shit like that to people who are feeling down. When the world feels hopeless and you just want a way out, having a stranger tell you that they think it’s all sunshine and roses can actually make it worse. I guess it sort of feels like “wow I’m glad you’re so happy, wish I could feel that way but I don’t, so you’re actually reinforcing how terrible I feel right now.” I can’t speak to everyone’s experiences, but I honestly don’t think fake positivity is ever particularly helpful.

What would be the right thing to say in this situation?
3
u/Spare_Idea_6184 14m ago
I'm sure there are better people trained to respond that question than me.. But I think the notion that you will fail and that what you will get out of it is a life altering injury that will take away your autonomy and make living worse is something that should make anyone with suicidal tendencies question if that is the way. At the end of the day the thing that wants to die is your mind, not your body and it will try to keep living no matter what your intentions are and in all honesty you owe it to your body to be alive.

Also one that shows how life in one year's time has distinctly less suffering in it than now.

What if they put ads ?

Extra context from this article:
There has been controversy in the past concerning some anti-suicide measures. One example is the suicide prevention messages that were inscribed on the railings of Mapo Bridge in 2012 and Hangang Bridge in 2012 and 2013, respectively.
Some of them carried words of encouragement, but others featured bad jokes and what some described as questionable choices of words like, “Try it, then” and Hahahahahaha.”

Maybe I'm the oddball but that would make me laugh. Id want to jump less than if I read how life is so worth it while im considering ending it all

Gonna guess all that press made it a more famous place so more people thought about using it.

Well when you make it out like the bridge is having a better day than you it's going to make you a bit depressed.

u/Cellafex 52m ago
I dont think you wanna read those fortune cookie phrases when youre in that mindset. The amount of people killing themselves might also have increased in general near that area.

u/kylediaz263 17m ago
Many of those messages are basically:
"Look at how happy and normal these people are, why aren't you?"
or
"You're making people sad."
2
u/TokiVideogame 49m ago
its like facebook, highlighting other peoples happiness while amplifying your sadness lol

I feel like well it’s good intentioned, seeing that just makes you think of death. It’s like “You’re lucky to be born” etc all these ominous messages and it makes you think why they’ve put these up are because of all the death. Idk there’s probably other factors at play just my 2 cents

Almost like there are much deeper reasons for people deciding to take their lives, than a bridge's name and messages it's decorated with. Like the cutthroat work culture and sky high property prices. Almost like a bandaid doesn't work for such deep problems pushing people through the edge.
1
u/SirPinkyToes 1m ago
I don't think the positive message is the problem. People don't go :"oh, they tell me to be happy and don't end my life, well I'm gonna do the opposite of that".
It's kinda like streissand effect. People have killed themself all over the country, but now they "know" that there's exist a bridge that kinda (in)famous for sucidal people that thet have not heard yet, but now they have. so people come flocking to the bridge.
kinda like that infamous suicide forest in Japan. Not that there are anything different between it and other forest. It's just more famous, and more report.

Something something correlation is not causation.
4
u/MrZephy 1h ago
If not the cause then how else is this correlated lol
-1
u/Alternative_Cod7515 1h ago
Idk, maybe the goverment is kinda ineffective at making life better and this is the most effort they did. Of course it will increase the rate of sucide, and the bridge is not the cause ?
