The call before he talks to his son also counts. (paraphrasing for both of the segments)

"Yes sir, I did."

"Why?"

"Well sir, he stole John Wick's car and killed his dog."

Staraptor in this animated Pokemon short

874

u/RynnHamHam 14h ago

Aura Sphere is a move that never misses so the fanon joke to keep the lore consistent is that it locked onto some poor Bidoof or Burmy in the bushes instead of Staraptor.

156

u/Rogol_Darn 13h ago

Or Staraptor used Detect, it's not like that move would have much of a visible animation in practice

96

u/4C_Enjoyer 11h ago

Yeah but that's not nearly as funny as sending your never-miss hand nuke at someone only for it to veer off course and snipe some deeply unfortunate bastard of a Caterpie that was just chilling in some bushes

667

u/M-Shadowtoad 15h ago

The issue is, if the attack has that much destructive radius, it could just be fired at the ground near it.

345

u/Dragos_Drakkar 15h ago

A typical problem, don't fire the explosive weapon at the target, aim at the environment near the target, and let the splash do the work. Unless the target is too big to miss or can't move, but that’s still risky.

Temari says this exactly when Madara pulls a meteor from the sky (Naruto Shippuden)

613

u/Riverwind0608 15h ago edited 1h ago

That anime really went from being about Ninjas into Wizards dressed as Ninjas.

*EDIT*

Alright, i woke up to what is pretty much mostly the same comment from different people. To those i have this to say.

Yes, there were "kaiju", some fireballs and what not. But in the earlier episodes, those was and were considered special. Especially the really extravagant ones. They were rare. And the techniques that the earlier episodes had can still be associated with ninjutsu. Elemental techniques, shadow clones, chidori, etc, was still within the realms of what is considered ninjutsu. If you take a look at other media and/or videogames, like FF14's and Ragnarok Online's Ninja, they do use elemental techniques. Even the old anime, Flame of Recca, made use of elemental techniques. Basically, the earlier episodes still stuck to the theme.

Then all of a sudden, everyone and their mother had a cursed or hidden technique and what not, that could level everything from buildings to mountains, to entire towns. And the ones actually practicing ninjutsu are literally getting shoved aside. The ratio between actual ninjas and what are basically wizards is skewing to the latter. To the point shown by the pic where Madara just straight up summoned a meteor. I think the only ones actually practicing ninjutsu is Shikamaru and Tenten and some i may have missed. Most of the rest are basically different flavors of wizard.

Yes, i know that Kishimoto basically pulled what is essentially malicious compliance. Since he originally wanted an anime about magic and sorcery, hence how the anime ended up. But at the very least, the earlier episodes tried to stick to the theme that Kishimoto begrudgingly stuck to at the time. Hence my comment.

376

u/Terrariant 15h ago

As is tradition with anime. Start off small, by the end you are fighting god (literally, a lot of the time)

267

u/Beginning_Bee2500 14h ago

A classic trope at this point.

First mission: Save cat

Final mission: Slay god

240

u/shiawase198 14h ago

138

u/Terrariant 14h ago

The anime starts with people cloning themselves 100 times and transforming themselves into sexy women. The first major villain they face, zabuza can magically conjure mist, clone himself out of water, can trap people in magic water bubbles and even create a dragon from water. The first scene in the anime they're literally doing a ritual to bind a fox demon into a baby. When was it ever about anything other than magic?

It's a great scene because you just know that as a Warrior, he's used to any and all humans immediately dropping everything and fleeing at the sight of him.

Meanwhile Paradis' military has spent the last century doing nothing but fighting titans almost exclusively.

Puts a real fun spin on the lyrics of the first opening song. "Are we prey? No, we're the hunters!"

When Puss faces the bounty hunter wolf in Puss in Boots the Last Wish, he doesn't take the hint when he gets disarmed in the blink of an eye before he finishes his battle intro.

He starts to get the idea when the wolf starts cleaning the floor with him... and later makes him bleed. This leads to Puss actually feeling fear and retiring out of fear for his final life.

"You're not living up to the legend... gato."

I think it's also poetic for people who were kids when Shrek first came out and Puss was introduced.

18 years after first seeing him with Shrek, the kids are now grown up and facing the adult world, most of us realizing we're actually fragile bags of flesh and not as resilient as when we were kids.

If you were 8 when Shrek 2 came out, you would've been around 30 when the Puss in Boots came out. You've probably had health exams, gotten sick, had covid, or gone through a life-changing experience.

Loki in Thor Ragnarok when Hela broke Mjolnir

228

u/JingoboStoplight4887 14h ago

248

u/Viridun 13h ago

What's interesting about this gif is that while it's the same scene as in the movie, the background is clearly not from the scene used. They did this with a lot of the Ragnarok trailers, including not revealing his hammerless lightning powers.

110

u/AppleTStudio 13h ago

Odin was originally going to be in an old folks home in NYC. This scene originally took place in an alley outside the nursing home.

51

u/Belephron 13h ago

I think it’s reshoots more so than keeping stuff from the trailer secret. Clearly the original intent was for Odin to be in New York (Loki hid him in a retirement home) and not long after they find him, he dies, and Hela shows up, all in New York. Presumably that felt like kind of a bummer for a character like that to die in a grimy place, so they rearranged some stuff to have Odin die somewhere more picturesque, which changes where the Hela scene occurs, hence different background despite the shot being identical. Could also be to work around the Doctor Strange inclusion which was a post credit from a different movie and potentially not something the movie had fully accounted on working around.

I fucking love that moment. My interpretation is that Nolan already knew he was dead when he decided to destroy the planet.

But it was only in this moment that it occurred to him that Mark didn’t realise that, and wasn’t ready to die.

So this is the look of a father who wants to comfort his son, but has nothing to comfort him with.

35

u/eh-man3 13h ago

Nopan had never, once, in millenia faced anything he couldn't beat. 99% of the multiverse is like wax paper to him. Even the guardians was more of an emotional beating than a physical one and im still not sure be didn't job it a bit to give himself an alibi. Most of the things that could threaten him, he was still able to destroy utterly by freezing or dehydrating or sonic-booming the whole damn planet to death. And when they fought Conquest, they won.

Im not sure Nolan did think he was dead for destroying the planet. I think he was following his MO and assumed it would work the way it always had. Even the most dangerous enemy is defeated when they dont even have planet to live on anymore. And I think he still though the other Viltrumites would finally give up on the Empire with Viltrum fully gone.

I dont think he ever would have put Mark in a guaranteed death situation at that point. Risk his life? Sure, that's just being a Viltrumite. But hed become too human to send his sons on a suicide mission.

When Frieren reveals her actual mana capacity to Aura

139

u/NinjaBreadManOO 13h ago

You know what, now I'm only just realising that Aura probably never went up against an elf before. Sure she's seen demons and humans, probably a few dwarves; but I suddenly doubt she's ever viewed an elf's mana level.

Sure Frieren is hiding it from her, but Aura's only been around for like 500 years and there's very few elves. And, IIRC Frieren even mentions at some point her mana level isn't all that impressive for an elf (although she may have been comparing herself to Serie and other powerful elves), she's just good at managing it.

60

u/RC_0041 13h ago

In anime we've only seen a few elves, Serie obviously has an insane amount of mana (even when hiding it), Kraft is an ancient hero that saved the world, Frieren is quite impressive and killed the demon king, not sure about Milliarde but she is old enough to be very impressive also. So yeah all the elves we've seen are legendary figures.

38

u/NinjaBreadManOO 13h ago

Yeah, there very likely is some survivors bias with surviving elves, where the ones that have made it to the modern era needed to be more powerful. As killing an elf, even a weak one would probably be a pretty good feather in a warrior/mage's cap. So the young and weak ones likely don't make it.

The whole cinematic is of the Human and Orc characters locked in a battle to the death, only for Kung Fu Panda to interrupt and effortlessly beat the shit out of both of them simultaneously so badly they're absolutely gobsmacked into immediately calling a truce. Not that it does any good, because he proceeds to beat the shit out of them simultaneously a second time.

Tserriednich is absolute scum of the earth, but it's been genuinely entertaining watching him just embrace his masochistic side as he learns how deep the waters he's swimming in actually are.

To put the Dizzy finisher in perspective, her mother Justice aka Aria Hale Aka Jack'O, it's complicated Basically blew up Japan. Dizzy is no slouch in sheer power. Thankfully she is a genuinely nice person and the only reason that destroy attack doesn't hit the opponent is that she manages to pull her sentient wing aside at the last second. Notably, this attack then says "Surrendered" instead of "Destroyed" unlike other instant kill attacks.

Also, every character has their own unique animation panicking or in Slayer's case, calmly shrugging and acknowledging dizzy wins this round.pictured was my favorite.

Zoro vs Mihawk (One Piece)

Durante a luta, Zoro foi completamente e facilmente superado por Mihawk, que mal precisava usar sua espada Yoru (And when he used it, it was practically a near-death experience for Zoro)

141

u/IamFlapJack 14h ago

Only wanted to add that Mihawk absolutely did not need to use Yoru, he only used it to show respect to Zoro for challenging him as a true swordsman.

57

u/RavenCyarm 14h ago

It really shows the scale of power in the series, because up to that point Zoro was a total badass who everyone was terrified of. He looked like he really could be the world’s strongest swordsman. But then Mihawk shows up and makes Zoro look like an ant in comparison to him.

It’d be like if Beerus showed up to spar with Goku when he was a kid and Beerus only used his little toe.

69

u/intrinsic_nerd 14h ago

Not to mention that he specifically starts the fight with the smallest blade he had (like 3 inches long maybe?) to give Zoro any sort of chance of surviving more than 2 seconds

32

u/TankMain576 13h ago

I remember the old 4 kids dub called it the knife he uses to cut his nails or something and honestly, that's even more humiliating

That scene with the punisher was so funny. I also hate it at the same time. Spiderman gave him one job. Just the one and you know what he does? He gets too close and Jean brain washes him.

Kira yoshikage realising he messed up big time - source is Jojo's bizarre adventure

122

u/jawaunw1 14h ago

The entire second half of this part is him doing everything just to avoid meeting jotaro again. It really puts in the perspective of how scared he was in this fight

46

u/NeighborhoodDear2321 13h ago

This is why I really like Jojo, most series would've had Jotaro shelved for some reason for plot i.e injury or similar.

Here it just makes sense, Jotaro is the force of nature that the whole plot kinda revolves around, getting Jotaro in range of Kira is the goal of the protags (or otherwise defeating Kira), while getting as far away as possible is the goal of the villian. It's just natural.

Shout-out to Slayer’s version of Dizzy’s instant kill where he just shrugs with a tiny smile as if to say “eh, not bad, I’ll give you this one.” Because he himself is one of the most powerful characters in the lore and has canonically never lost a fight.

Overlord. Pretty much any time Ainz fights anyone. They go in cocky and then leave humiliated or dead.

But one particular instance was especially fitting. A group of mercenaries are sent to investigate Nazerick and got baited into a trap to fight Ainz. Initially he fought as a warrior, but he wore a ring that concealed his magic strength so Arche, their caster, couldn't detect it. Leading them to believe he was just a skeletal warrior.

The moment he took the ring off Arche panicked, vomited twice and realized they were all going to die.

This and the moment he summons the dark young. One guy in the army even asks "this is a dream, right?" Realizing they're about to be annihilated after watching 70,000 of their comerades die in an instant only to be sucked up by a black goo which turns into giant baby demon goats coming right at them.

Bleach - The main characters theme music plays indicating that he's about to pull off some cool shit. The big bad that just revealed himself however instantly defeats him, and stops the theme mid track. That theme music never plays again for the rest of the series.

The first fight against ORT in Fate/ Grand Order. Tezcatlipoca use his powers to briefly show you what will happen if you don't stop him from waking up ORT, so you try to fight him but you quickly notice it hits too hard, can negate many of your skills, each time he defeats a party member he absorbs them and has a lot of health that, if you somehow manage to deplete, the HUD changes and shows you that it he has still like a dozen health bars left...

And worse of all, later, when you have to fight the real thing now with a lot of support in your favor, its revealed not only that the first time wasn't even in his final form, but that during the "fight" he didn't even noticed your party a a threat and his attacks were actually just his reflexes...
