I was a truck driver in Washington state. This is 100% true. One time I was pulled over on the shoulder and cars started to line up behind me. (It was sort of close to an exit but still) I got out and tried to wave them around. Pretty soon there was a huge line of cars behind me. I just sat there and chuckled to myself until I dealt with whatever it was and continued on my way.

I remember once in 5th grade, I was a little early for class and I stood outside the door before going in. I was just pretty much staring into space, we didn't have cell phones yet, and I honestly can't remeber what I did with my time back then. Anyway, I recall another student come up and wait near me, and before I knew it the time for class was now and there were 15 students outside. They just all assumed the door was locked and the teacher wasn't there.

I am in university. This still happens, I just got a new class, and went in, a group of 30 students formed in front of the door, me along with the teacher, both new faces, were already inside. We had to wait until 5 minutes after the lecture was supposed to start for people to come in lol

We had the entire school line up at a door once after a massive school recess. Everyone standing around for 15 minutes. A janitor showed up, confused, walked up, and opened the completely unlocked door.

In high school, my friend Kevin and I had English together, and coincidentally our classes right before that were both just a few doors down from the English classroom. So we were always the first two students to arrive for that class period, and this was before cell phones so we made our own fun to kill time before class started.
One day we stood in the busy hallway right outside the classroom door and stared in fascination up at the ceiling overhead, just to see how other people would react. After a moment, another student stopped walking and looked up at the ceiling too to see what we were looking at. This attracted the attention of another student, who stopped to gaze upward as well. A third and fourth followed. The first student gave up trying to see what was so interesting, and walked off, but was replaced by another student who was attracted by the other three craning their necks to look straight up. On and on, like dominos falling.
By this time, Kevin and I had stopped looking up, and were standing off to one side shaking with silent laughter as a knot of random students formed, all in assorted stages of staring pointlessly up at the ceiling. That became our favorite form of passing period entertainment for the rest of the year. So fucking funny.
RIP Kev. Miss you, bud.

Me and a few friends tried doing the opposite a few weeks later where we got there early and waited in front of the doors. We made the entire class 10 minutes late to lab...

Everyone is super quick judge their intelligence but it’s pretty clear they think the traffic from their exit is backed up and jumping out of the line only to try cutting back in a few hundred feet later would just make them an asshole and you would judge them for that too

Depending on the traffic in the left lane, it might be scary to try to peel off. Obviously the ones in the left are going way faster than stopped, and it takes some time to get into the other lane and get going, making yourself an obstacle. This is true for the rest of the line too, even if they have the foresight to suspect the cause.
The video of course doesn't look TOO bad, but you do see a truck getting overtaken, and we don't know what's behind. Even a valid window might not seem so if you see vehicles in your mirror going literally 100x+ the speed you would be going if you carefully squeeked out
I should say, I agree what you say is the move, but I also see how I might also hesitate on the first few openings
note that even though the video is slowed down, when OP passes the stopped truck, they are still going 67* mph according to the cam data. It's like trying to merge onto the highway from a stop with no ramp. It's nuts

Here in France it is mandatory to have a triangle in your car and to place it ~150m away from your car if it's broken down on the road.
You also must have a reflective jacket and put it on.
You literally can get fined if you don't have these in your car !

Well youre not wrong. Pretty sure all vehicles like this used for commercial use are required to have some type of warning device for instances like this. Driver should turn hazards on as soon as the breakdown occurs and has like 10 minutes to set the emergency warning devices out. Atleast thats the rule directly from the fmcsa. So this situation is pretty much entirely on the box truck driver not knowing/doing their job properly.

You have absolutely no visibility behind a truck like that. There's no way to know there isn't a massive line of cars in front of that truck.
Now after a few minutes of absolutely 0 movement, you might try to go around, but we don't know how long they've been there. A line like that can build up really quickly on a highway.

I've had someone blocking an otherwise clear lane for several minutes. I have also nearly been rear ended many times because of someone stopping in an otherwise clear lane trying to get over. I had just one recording of time I nearly got rear ended saved. I gave the person ages of space, stayed way back too, still wasn't enough for them. https://imgur.com/a/2TEvShd The stop is about half way through.

The point is that having a few assholes around is useful, because the first one who cuts around shows the others that maybe the line isn't real.
The zipper merge location is undefined for a freeway exit precisely because of situations like this. I've seen this happen more than once. Do I always blindly get in any line nearby to where I want to be? That seems a bit silly.

Had something similar happen to me several years ago on a much smaller scale, myself and 2 other drivers. I pulled off to the side in an otherwise empty parking lot, across a few spots, to take a phone call. Where I had parked, I was facing a concrete barrier and a 20 foot light pole. I was not near the entry/exit, let alone blocking it from anyone wanting to enter or exit this otherwise empty parking lot. I’m in the middle of my phone call and suddenly I hear a horn honking, so I look behind me in my mirror and see not one but two vehicles lined up directly behind me. Again, let me remind you that I was parked across a few spots, foot off the brake, and I’m pretty sure too that I even turned my car off. I ended my phone call, started my car again and maneuvered my way around the barrier and drove away. I looked in my mirrors as I drove off and didn’t see either vehicle anywhere, leaving me even more confused. I wish I had thought to ask the property owner if they had outdoor surveillance to make sure it had actually happened because it was so bizarre.

Hmmm, this seems to be an unusual case of people actually DOING THE RIGHT THING, but being mistaken! Nobody wanted to be the jerk who goes around the line and cuts back in at the front… But if they had done that, they would have seen the broken-down truck and easily made the exit!

God I miss the weather and beaches of SoCal but never ever the traffic. I remember being in bumper to bumper traffic at 2am on a Wednesday early AM on the 101 because of night construction but it blew my mind that there were still enough cars on the road to cause it to become gridlock for over a mile going from 4 lanes to 2 at 2am.

I used to take that route for work everyday. It really does get backed up that bad so no surprise to sit standstill like that. Theres only one lane for the exit, which actually is an intersection to another standstill freeway. Definitely the trucks fault for not signaling that it's stopped.
