People should dance more. It's great to see them all have so much fun.

Yup! Learning to dance was awesome and a confidence booster when I did it! Even if you’re uncoordinated, take the time and make the effort.

Seriously, for the longest time I thought I was just not cut out for dancing until I happened to start taking lessons. Crazy how that works 😅🙈.

What type of dance lessons do you recommend for an absolute beginner? Hip hop, jazz, swing etc. I’m extreeemely uncoordinated and awkward when dancing, but would love to improve just so that I don’t feel so awkward when I go out dancing with friends!

East Coast Swing is beginner friendly and the crowd is beginner friendly, too. Find a spot in your town where they do swing dancing and show up an hour early. Normally an hour before the normal start time there’s a free hour-long lesson for newer dancers.

I think it highly depends on what your taste in style is, the teaching methods, and also the people in your class. Aside from that, Salsa is quite popular for its relatively low threshold. You could also just sign up for single workshops or visit an open house. The hardest step is just trying something out in the first place. Don't be too hard on yourself and just try and have fun. 💜

I did take some dance lessons when I was in my teens. If you consider someone like Bob Fosse to be at 99%, this couple to be at 70%, and my expectations for myself were at 0% I surprised myself by being a full 3% and hitting my skill cap.

It's a great idea to at least try dance lessons for a bit. But not everyone will succeed. Some of us just really are that uncoordinated and awkward.

The best thing is dancing can mean so many things so its a very inclusive activity.

My fucked up legs says no though. 😞

Go with your fucked up leg anyway. Not all dancing is high impact. If you don’t need mobility devices, chances are you can dance.

If you DO need mobility devices, you can still dance. I learned how to dance in a wheelchair at a punk bar. I was in the chair for years and the punk bar was the only music venue in the city without stairs.

It's a lot more fun when you're good at something, and getting good requires a lot of practice.

I beg to differ. Dancing is, or can be, fun at any skill level. It's not always or just about being good at something. Music, physical movement and community in itself have a positive effect on people: that's where I'mgetting at. Sure, learning a skill can be that much more satisfying as you progress to higher levels, but dancing has a comparatively low threshold when it comes to fun factor iyam.

Community and ambiance are great. But bad dancing is like bad cooking; everyone can try, everyone can learn, but if the result is poor, no one is going to want it, and you're not going to get a lot of satisfaction. But you just have to keep learning.

I really don't understand dancing as an activity, I can't even watch the full video it makes me cringe for some reason

That's kinda sad if you ask me 🥺

That’s a very strange reaction.

I'm with you. Not everyone can (nor should) resonate with the same hobbies. I'm sure they would be as uninterested in mine as I am with theirs.

It's nice when done with a person you like or generally to have fun, but learning it is kinda boring if you are doing it on your own. Try some dance classes, you might actually like it more when it's taught to you in a group.

I disagree. I decided to learn to swing dance to impress a girl I was going to see again in a few months. I went to solo every swing dance event in the metro area for months.

I had a blast! The people were awesome, the dancing was great, and later when the girl and I met up again months later it was fun.

Definitely worth it.

I hate dancing , I don’t care that other people like it but I do not like it

Thank you for contributing your view on the matter. Now if you don't mind, the rest of us would like to have our fun without listening to your hate for it.
