My aunt use to have maggots and slugs all over her trashcan and we would be out there it seemed like every other day with salt or bleach and a water hose.
What is with Reddit recently and the constant reuploading of specific videos and images across multiple subs for weeks over the last six-ish months?ā¦
I should've taken a video, but phone cameras were shitty back when I worked at a George Webbs and the dumpster out back was completely covered in maggots. I could've been a pioneer of garbagemaggot content creation
I know the feelingā¦ once it happened in our flat! We cleand the whole flat but forgot some stuff in the bio bin under the sink before leaving for vacation. When we came backā¦ no, I canāt. I still have ptsd from it.
Damn I feel that. Happend exactly the same for us. The amount of flys after just 2 or so days was insane. After that I have fly ptsd. I see one, I kill it. The is no alternative.
I have six large pots of cyclamen going across a shelf in front of my kitchen windows.
One morning I got up there were scores of baby flies crawling up the windows and flying around. Didn't want to smash them on my windows, nor did I want to get Raid on them, so I removed the attachment from the vacuum and sucked them all up. It was so easy, and I could even suck them up in mid air. I removed the canister, emptied it and sprayed it with Raid. The next morning it was the same situation so I guess the fly eggs hatched at different times. I repeated the same process and it became a sport and I was very good at it.
A few years ago, my roommate and I did a first large grocery and ran out of space to store stuff, so we put a bag of onions on a high closet over the oven. Skip a month into summer and we're having a big trouble with lots of small flies in our house, we kill them but more come. I blame it on the drains, we plug them when not in use, then on the windows (the trash cans were around four metres from one of them) and then I just accepted that flies were inherent to living there, as we didn't spot anything rotten. One day, I was doing some cleaning around the kitchen, organizing the drawers and got curious about what could we have in that high closet where we thought we had nothing but kitchen stuff we didn't use. I stood on a chair and opened it.
You can imagine the rest, but I almost fell off that chair the moment I looked in.
That usually happens when you throw meat in the trash. My solution to prevent this is to keep meat scraps in the freezer and only put them in the trash bin shortly before it gets collected.
I used to work for an environmental consulting company and some jobs would require beaver carcasses (thankfully I never did those jobs). But they kept them in a freezer in a shed in the parking lot. The parking lot was sloped and the shed was at the top of the slope. The freezer died once and they started to rot (not sure if the freezer was left openedā¦I didnāt go look). The smell is unforgettable. Within a very short time, the entire surface of the 40-car capacity parking lot was COVERED in maggots wriggling around. I couldnāt walk to my car without sliding around on them. It was disgusting and I didnāt park in that lot again until they were all gone.
Its good.
When it gets hot out we usually put a stick inbetween the lid, so they are more likely to crawl out when its dark.
Then the moment it gets light the birds swoop in and survey the bin.
We got a few birds that are regulars. That will stick around.
When i go to throw stuff away i shake the bin a bit to make the small flies themselves get out.
Just make sure the bin is a bit further from your door and its totally fine.
This: feed the birds. I had the same thing happening when returning from a trip :compost bin was flooded with disco rice. I put it outside, open, and the birds had a feast. Afterwards bleach - rinse - as new.
Leave it open, first birds will gladly take care of the maggots and second, stuff will dry out, reduce the stink to almost zero. Learned that by doing it.
Yep...did this about a week ago....maggots are AMAZING at cleaning stuff like this. Leave the can open. They will eat until yhe buffet is gone and then you will be left with a pretty clean can and very little smell. It's almost like they were born to do it
Former garbageman here. Thereās a very distinct smell that maggots produce. You get to where you can smell it over all the other trash smells. Doesnāt mean we donāt toss it, just means that we handle it carefully. I know they canāt hurt you but it only takes one episode of getting a writhing shit ton down your shirt to learn otherwise.
Ugh, for some reason in all the years I've had an outdoor curb bin I've only had the maggot explosions while living in my current house. Ruins my day when I don't notice them until I grab the bin to move it and mash a bunch with my hand
Chickens love them. They climb at a certain stage in their development. Breeders put ramps in their enclosure with a bucket at the end. They will self sort themselves from the compost into the bucket.
This reminds me of the time that I went out in the middle of the night to bring the kitchen garbage bag out to the garbage cans.
I flew the lid open and the pitch darkness and threw the bag in. I felt and heard all of these things pelt all over me. Then I felt these things moving. In horror, I grabbed my phone out of my pocket and turned the flashlight on.
There were maggots, crawling all over me, and all over the ground and many of them were crawling out of the garbage can.
Thereās so many things that I wish I remembered like memories of my children that they remember, and I donāt. Of course I remember this.
Yeah, it's summer time. I rinse the garbage can out with water each time, and that help keep them down. But, I'm between two pastures, so flies and their larvae are part of life.
My neighborhood has a lot of feral cats, so this has never really been a problem where I live (because the cats very much enjoy the protein whenever they find it)
This exact thing happened to me. Gap under the front door next to the bin meant the maggots all came into my house... the ones under the door all turned into flies. Not a fun week.
Happened to me while we went on vacation. There was a thunderstorm after they took the compost and I stood outside hosing the bin down, emptying it and sending water into drain. The maggots hang in for dear life despite a hose of water, they are strong! Took over a dozens rounds, I had a lot more clinging to inside of bin that this guy...argh...PTSD! Then a friend drops by wondering why I was in the storm getting wet like a crazy person! šŖ
When I was a kid the neighbor across the street used to do a lot of hunting and he had a big freezer in his house where he kept his venison. He went away on a hunting trip and his power got turned off. When he got back his whole house was full of maggots and flies the carcass started rotting and the door got blown open they had cleaners in the house for a week it was horrific .
What was really gross about this is that I had a brown bug land on my phone while watching this. It made it seem like they were actually coming out of my phone.
Part of my family had poor planning, even though I warned them beforehand. As result they left apartment in hurry and had no time to remove food from refrigerator.
Fast forward 5 months I returned and had to clean refrigerator in similar state, albeit much much worse one. It was a nightmare, couldn't eat for 2 days after finishing with cleaning.
