The Great Witch of Cedarhold - Gator Days

Characters

Polly - Opossum - A young teen with an eclectic taste in music. In tune with her emotions and those of others. Olivia's older sister.

Gustopher - Alligator - An easily excitable boy who loves making friends. August's son.

Olivia - Opossum - A child who is shy until she gets to know you. In reality she's rather mischievous and likes pranks. Polly's younger sister.

Ms. Mercow - Manatee - An older woman who might be a witch.

Transcript

Panel 1

Polly is standing by a fence and is telling Gustopher and Olivia about a local legend. The top of someone's head can just barely be seen behind the fence.

Polly: CAREFUL! The Great Witch of Cedarhold lives here!

Panel 2

Polly contorts her face to look as frightening as possible.

Polly: A kid broke her shed window so she turned him into a worm. Then she turned his parents into birds. And then-

No, no, no. This is much too scary for me. I'm just going to assume that the bird parents worked out some plans on how to best take care of their worm son. They probably sent him to medical school and taught him how to play the drums.

Panel 3

Polly doesn't get to finish her story as the person behind the fence has made herself known. She looks over the top of the fence revealing her inquisitive eyes and shares her own reaction to the story.

Ms. Mercow: Oh my...

Gustopher: THE WITCH!

Olivia: RUN!

Panel 4

Polly suddenly feels embarrassed about making up such a scary story and apologizes.

Polly: I'm sorry, Ms. Mercow.

Ms. Mercow: I always wanted to be a witch. Tell them I'll take their bones if they hurt my hydrangeas.

Ms. Mercow is also contemplating buying a pointy hat.

An older woman who might be a witch.

I have instant love of her and want nothing but the best for her witchy ways

No, no, no. This is much too scary for me. I'm just going to assume that the bird parents worked out some plans on how to best take care of their worm son.

I was gonna say this is DARK for you. I like it. Keep going.

Ms. Mercow is also contemplating buying a pointy hat.

Go off Ms Mercow! Dive in and become the legend

Do you have a job? How are you immediately commenting on every single post in this sub

78

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 18h ago

Career firefighter paramedic and part time beach lifeguard and teacher working approx 60 hours a week

29

u/Ashamed-Raccoon-1387 17h ago

How do you have that much energy??

56

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 17h ago

Cant get tired if you just never stop

But seriously I have like 4 full days off a week even with that schedule

16

u/Ashamed-Raccoon-1387 17h ago

Oh that's not that bad then. I work 5-6 days at a bank and I can't be bothered to do much else.

2

u/Aryore 8h ago

So you basically work 3 20-hour days a week on average?

7

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 8h ago

Yes but also no. I work 2 twenty four hour shifts followed by a 12. Usually in the pattern of off, 24, 12, off, 24, off, off.

2

u/BekisElsewhere39 3h ago

A 24 hour shift? You’re awake for a whole day? How??

1

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 2h ago

Loooooots of caffeine.

We do have an option to sleep after 8pm but if calls come, we go. And with each call taking about an hour, you get more then 3 after midnight and your next day is gonna suuuuuuck

7

u/JohnnySnark 17h ago

Lifeguard at eternal beach city??

8

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 17h ago

Oh god how I wish. Unfortunately real beaches are not quite like that

My grandmother was in a train accident that left her face deeply scarred before I was born. One of the complications was that her left eye had intermittent petechial hemorrhaging and it would turn blood red.

All the kids on the block thought she was a witch, to them, she was terrifying.

To me, that was my granny! She was the best person in the whole world! She made cookies, gave hugs and made the best fried cornbread that ever existed.

She passed away on Mother’s Day of 2001. Surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren from complications of Parkinson’s.

On Halloween she always dressed as a witch and would terrify the hell out of the kids that always came for the candy. I think in some ways, she loved being seen as ‘the scary witch’ instead of ‘an ugly scarred woman.’

As an adult, I’m just glad that she found some peace, and even some whimsy from the accident.

Ms. Mercow is also contemplating buying a pointy hat.

Do it! Don't let your dreams be dreams, girl! SLAYYYY

I love those hyper sassy gurl memes so much 😂

The Patrick one is my favorite

10

u/Made_Bail 22h ago

They kill me lmao

7

u/Samus159 7h ago

Here’s a Grimm for you

3

u/Ok_Building_1284 15h ago

The first time i saw this image was when it was attached to a post where a girl spent the $200 or something she was given by her insurance compwny to fix her car on a nail job, and now she cant fix her car

21

u/JudgeHodorMD 22h ago

The trick is to find a hat that’s a bit off:

A black gardening hat that isn’t actually pointy. Or maybe a pointy hat that’s bright and flowery.

6

u/gdex86 21h ago

Today is a "say something" hat day. Now and forever

They probably sent him to medical school and taught him how to play the drums.

It's so sad that he ended up dropping out. But at least he's getting better on the drums.

9

u/rillip 20h ago

I hear he's friends with that Jewish vole too. The one that plays sick guitar solos.

25

u/GenghisZahn 22h ago

I see what you did there with the They Might be Giants reference. Well played.

6

u/theyellowdart94 21h ago

They call me Doctor Worm.

6

u/copperfrog42 22h ago

It’s a subtle one, but I got it.

13

u/everysproutingtree 22h ago

Maybe they sent him to medical school, but he’s not a real doctor.

14

u/Dc3mjh 21h ago

But he is a real worm, he is an actual worm

11

u/SparkyMuffin 21h ago

They probably sent him to medical school and taught him how to play the drums.

He probably dropped out. He's not an actual doctor but he is an actual worm and he likes to play the drums. I think he's getting rather good, but I'm sure he can handle criticism.

8

u/Silentlybroken 20h ago

Mercow the manatee is so perfect and made me giggle. Fabulous name.

5

u/Boosterboo59 20h ago

These transcripts are my favourite parts of these comics especially with the funny jokes added in.

4

u/Impossible-Falcon-62 22h ago

When did Polly get her ear pierced?

5

u/Impressive_Being_167 22h ago

All three opossum- mom and both daughters - have always had their ears pierced.

3

u/Impossible-Falcon-62 21h ago

I meant Olivia and only Polly had her ear pierced last I checked.

2

u/Zombie_Fuel 8h ago

Polly is the only one with the pierced ear in this comic. It took me a sec too. I don't think Olivia has hers pierced at all (yet).

2

u/Impossible-Falcon-62 8h ago

I realized that I mistook those two. I wasn’t reading the comic description correctly 🤪

3

u/AZ_Corwyn 18h ago

Tell them I'll take their bones if they hurt my hydrangeas

"And their little dog too!" Better not let Titan get too close!

1

u/deros94 21h ago

He's not a real doctor but he is a real worm.

1

u/saucysatay 17h ago

Dr Worm reference spotted hell yeah 🤘🪱

1

u/SpiritualMadman 14h ago

Is it a fence or an enclosure with a body of water for the manatee? Hmm I guess it would collapse under the water pressure.

440

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 22h ago

Ms Mercow sounds like an absolute delight! I bet she makes amazing snacks and those hydrangeas are to die for.

Turned a kid into a worm and then his parents into birds and then....

WOW Polly that's some Eric Cartman level story telling and feeding of someone to another someone. That got dark

23

u/No-Collection532 21h ago

Titus Andronicus

15

u/tricksterloki 21h ago

I have a great idea for the play involving sock puppets.

474

u/Made_Bail 22h ago

How can you NOT love being an adult that plays along with kid's games? Ill never understand grumpy ass adults who treat children like an irritation.

I mean, the kid screaming on the plane? I get that. Parents, get your shit together. But kids playing in the street and having a great time? That's magical. Ms Mercow gets it.

84

u/DarthJackie2021 22h ago

Right? Imagine being upset that kids are being kids and having fun.

37

u/Made_Bail 22h ago

There are a lot of absolutely miserable people out there who take offense to other people not being miserable. Its so sad.

12

u/The_cogwheel 22h ago

Also too many people being overprotective of their reputation. I know a few people who'll get upset over someone calling them a witch, simply because theyll stew over silly things like "how could they call me a witch? Im not that ugly and old..." and worry the neighborhood would start treating them like theyre some sort of social outcast.

1

u/DarthJackie2021 21h ago

Do you perchance live in Salem, MA during the 1600s?

3

u/Jacob_Laye 17h ago

Unfortunately, the term witch is still pretty pejorative outside the internet

5

u/Not_ur_gilf 21h ago

Exactly! And this game has the effect of “kids leave my yard alone”! What better game is there?!?

30

u/Make_Iggy_GreatAgain 22h ago

I have no interest in raising a children, but having fun outside shouldn't bother people.

5

u/Astramancer_ 22h ago

I love that my neighborhood has tons of kids playing all the time. It shows how safe the neighborhood is.

9

u/I_am_up_to_something 20h ago

I live in front of a playground (live with my parents, the playground was a great thing when I was still a kid) and the sound of children playing there is great. I work from home and even with the window open it just isn't a bother at all. Sometimes you even overhear funny or sweet things the kids say. Like one kid just kept saying I love you to his grandparents in funny voices.

Some sounds are less great though.

Whatever draws children to bricks and wanting to throw it on the ground again and again and again can just fuck right off. I've hidden 3 bricks already! Or maybe less, my hiding spot might just suck.

And to the teens loudly playing tag at 03:00 on a weekday: wtf, it isn't vacation time so why are you loudly playing tag at 03:00? Go the fuck home and go to sleep! Or play tag somewhere that isn't right in the middle of a residential area!

5

u/thefirstlaughingfool 22h ago

I hope I'm that cool when I'm older.

6

u/Saucermote 18h ago

Kids playing games I can deal with. Kids feeding birds under my breezeway (so much bird poop) or bouncing basketballs off the side of my home, that's going to be me being grumpy.

3

u/Wishnik6502 16h ago

I've already decided that if I outlive all of my peers I'm going to become the scary neighborhood witch. I'd sit all hunched over in my rocker by the window of my "The 'Burbs" house, watching the kids go by while smoking my pipe...

Damn. I'll need to learn how to smoke.

3

u/Made_Bail 16h ago

Its easy. Just puff and exhale. And if you take too much and feel the need to cough, wait for the kids to be gone.

3

u/Draken09 18h ago

I was briefly believed to be a vampire. Wish I could recreate that success with the high school students I work with.

3

u/kitsunewarlock 18h ago

Sadly, a lot of games like this are started by older kids spreading gossip to their younger siblings as a form of establishing control and feeling "powerful".

Thus if you openly wore the witch hat and started to cackle, the preteens would be more likely to find it cringe and instead tell the younger children that "she's not really a witch".

2

u/A_Queer_Owl 11h ago

also keeps your hydrangeas looking their best.

1

u/H4llifax 9h ago

Don't you think the parents of the screaming child are the most annoyed of everyone on that plane? After all, they can't say "not my problem", but everyone else can. If that child is screaming, it's because the parents are helpless to stop it.

144

u/Gaskychan 22h ago

Oh the hu - manatee !

36

u/menides 22h ago

26

u/Cool_Set4681 22h ago

I mean, good luck with getting them out, they are kinda bad at it:

8

u/shigogaboo 19h ago

I just like that her name is Mercow

83

u/tdmatchasin 22h ago

Mercow

A manatee? A manatee!

Also I love how she's peaking over the fence like Tim's neighbor Wilson in Home Improvement.

u/NativeMasshole 22h ago edited 22h ago

Sea cow!

u/Immediate-Goose-8106 18h ago

I really smiled at the name.  V good touch FieldExplores!

33

u/mdallen 22h ago

Sounds like some of the houses in my neighborhood when I was a kid! We had stories about everyone living in them!

112

u/FieldExplores Gator Days 22h ago

10

u/mdallen 22h ago

We had one of those in the neighborhood! Along with "The Recluse," and "The Baker," a couple who represented their respective titles.

35

u/Saikotsu 22h ago

My mom has a shirt with a witches hat on it that says, "sometimes you gotta put on the hat to remind people what they're dealing with."

She's a nice old lady like Ms. Mercow, and this reminded me of that.

30

u/fefvrisketa 20h ago

Literally any older woman in my family lol

45

u/roshanritter 22h ago

19

u/Metalman919 21h ago

It's funny that with how wise he was, Tim Allen would probably call Wilson woke.

5

u/BreakfastNext476 17h ago

Yeah... God man turned into a fucking moron. Probably always was, but knew to keep it contained for decades

15

u/Siegfoult 22h ago

She turned me into a newt!

9

u/BriefCollar4 19h ago

I got better

14

u/wtfiwon 22h ago

Greatly reminds me of James Earl Jones's character in The Sandlot

11

u/OlyScott 22h ago

"Mrs. Mercow" is a great name for a manatee.

10

u/Cool_Set4681 22h ago

Ms. Mercow seems super chill and likeable. She gets to be a witch if she wants to 🧙🏻

One of the few times were I cant relate to the kids. In my childhood neighborhood we didn't have a scary house or person or a story like that 😅

9

u/ArchaicSoil 21h ago

Petition for Ms. Mercow to become the Mr. Wilson of Gator Days - you only see the top of her head when she's talking to someone over a fence.

9

u/ad-lib1994 22h ago

Ms. Mercow: you should be sorry for not making me sound even cooler

5

u/CaptainHawaii 22h ago

The bone line better have been spoken in the sweetest old lady voice ever 😝

5

u/AnEldritchWriter 21h ago

Love that Ma Mercow is so willing to go along with it. Love out your witchy dreams via the ghost stories the kids tell

5

u/InaneSpontaneity 17h ago

I misread it that she turned his pants into birds, which was honestly kind of terrifying...

5

u/LizardPoisonsSpock 22h ago

Witch, please!

4

u/Tnecniw 22h ago

I would be so in on it. XD
I would 100% play around and pretend to be a witch just to mess with kids.

4

u/masteryuri666 20h ago

Use the bones as gardening tools. Badass.

5

u/Squigglywigglyw0rm 16h ago

I love Ms. Mercow ❤️

4

u/Moshyma 15h ago

Manatee?

Mer-cow?

3

u/strangecabalist 22h ago

Nobody tell Ember this story!

3

u/SarcasticBench 22h ago

Funny thing is that she wasn't kidding about the bones stuff

1

u/Zizhou 11h ago

Yeah, you don't need to be a witch to take a child's bones for trampling your hydrangeas, but it does make it significantly more socially acceptable.

2

u/Aspiegirl712 22h ago

I love Ms Mercow!

2

u/TheGardenerAtWillows 22h ago

I wanna see Ms. Mercow’s garden, I’m sure it’s lovely with all sorts of cool exotic witchy plants

2

u/airfryerfuntime 21h ago

Times up, gimme your bones.

2

u/figgypie 19h ago

It's so much fun to roll with the silliness. I too aspire to one day become the Neighborhood Witch.

2

u/Kaining 18h ago

I gotta ask, but is this the beginning of a "Polly and Ms. Mercow accidentaly start a coven arc" ?

2

u/HamsterKazam 8h ago

Time to riot if we don't see Ms. Mercrow in a witch hat during Halloween, living her best witchy life.

2

u/theredjaycatmama 6h ago

The name “Mrs. Mercow” was inspired!

1

u/ForgetfulViking 22h ago

We need to get her the hat!

1

u/Random_Stealth_Ward 20h ago

"Mercow"

Nice

1

u/Sorry-Let-Me-By-Plz 20h ago

This is 95% of witchcraft.

1

u/Digit00l 19h ago

Mistress Mercow understands Boffo at least

1

u/Marinemanatee 19h ago

Oh, I love this character already!

1

u/Shyface_Killah 18h ago

I like her already!

1

u/Ill-Jellyfish6101 16h ago

Witch Mercow seems like a G.

1

u/big_green_boulder 13h ago

Oddly enough, I named my island on AC:NH Cedarhold when I remade it a couple years ago! I love it :D

1

u/StoriesToonHQ 12h ago

the kid hyping her up like a horror story and the reality being a gardening grandma, FieldExplores always nails these

1

u/Aracuda 9h ago

The great news is Ms. Mercow has just under two months to get a witch costume together and give those kids a Halloween to remember.

1

u/Cynglen 9h ago

Is this gonna be a character we only ever see peeking over the fence as a way for you to avoid depicting how an aquatic creature with no legs lives a terrestrial life?

1

u/never_____________ 7h ago

I’m somewhat (very) reclusive and have a habit of talking to myself in a very animated fashion when I walk the dog. I’m idly curious what image I’ve been transformed into by the small children around the neighborhood.

1

u/kioku119 6h ago

A perfectly fine witch indeed!! HEEHEEHEHEHEE!

1

u/aciakatura 4h ago

The hydrangeas are clearly a magic herb. If you get too close to them, you'll get cursed.

1

u/Crowmanhunter 7h ago

At my job in college, I was the supervisor for the Event Center, and my uniform was all black and had a lot of pockets. I was also flirting with the on campus Police Officer right next to me. Just then, a tour of elementary school kids were walking through, and I could hear them whispering, "See him? I think he's a Police Officer." To which one of the kids builds up the courage and yells at me very excitedly, "ARE YOU A POLICE OFFICER?"

The on campus police officer gives me the most sardonic look because she knows what I'm about to do and whispers, "Don't you dare."

I look her straight in the eyes and shout back at the kids, "THAT'S RIGHT, I'M A POLICE OFFICER."
