The lies are not the point. They aren't meant to convince anybody.

Additionally, the lies are an in-group signifier.

The lies show everyone else their loyalty to the crime ring.

This is a mechanism most often seen in cults and on a smaller scale in abusive relationships.

In that sense, the more outrageous the lie that the leader gets the rubes to repeat, the better. The willingness to openly repeat and pretend to believe insane lies of eyewatering magnitude shows that they are part of the cult and, ironically, that the leadership can trust them.
