I was 12 in a town about an hour north of New Orleans. When the first tower was hit, classes stopped immediately. We all turned on the TV in the classrooms; if kids were in a room without one, they were rotated in and out of the library or one of those rolling stand TVs was brought to the room. We all sat in silence periodically broken by quite whispers to each other trying to piece together what was going on. The teachers had no answers for us. Our parents were picking us up by the time the second tower was hit. Our parents seemed to know about as much as the teachers. The kids only knew that something BIG big just happened and not some buildings accidentally getting hit by some planes.
I wouldn't understand the true gravity of what happened until like 2 years later; it changed so much no matter how you look at it.
I was 16 and we had TVs in every classroom and we watched the coverage all day. Except in my bitch of a math teacher’s class where she announced “I don’t care what’s happening, we’re here to learn” and proceeded with our quiz and normal lesson plan
My US history teacher took us outside to look at the sky without any planes (we lived near an Air Force base and a decently busy airport) and told us that he was trying to teach us history but today we were experiencing history firsthand
