I was 12 and in gym class when they made the announcement. It was made multiple times by teachers and over the loud speaker. Then during history class a friend was told her mom was safe. The teacher told her in front of the entire class. She took her shoe off and threw it at our teacher crying and yelled, "what do you mean?! of course she's fine!"
My dad, who was divorced from my mom, picked us up from school early that day. My mom worked in customer service for a large airlines. She was not able to come home for a long time, and when she did come home she cried all the time. Later that week we attended a memorial service for the many local first responders who lost their lives.
