Maaan, I used to die on the hill of pronouncing gyro correctly. Then I moved to New York, was at restaurant that as far as me back then could tell was authentic in the right neighborhood, ordered some gyros, the dude stared at me a good 5 seconds – an eternity in New York time – and then it clicks, he goes, "Oh! Okay! looks over shoulder to kitchen Can I get 3 chicken JIE-ROWS!!" in the most Brooklyn/New York accent you can imagine. I felt a part of my soul die, specifically the part on that hill. Never again have I pronounced it right.

Croissant is pronounced with an R though. but you also have to do the OI, so it sounds like there's a w sound in there as well as R

...but it's not pronounced with a "kwa". That's arguably even less accurate.

I dated a girl from New York who pronounced gyro like in gyrate and was adamant that that was the correct pronunciation and thought I was weird for pronouncing it “yee-ro”.

Any New Yorkers wanna weigh in on this? Do y’all actually pronounce it that way?

I don't know if there is a wrong way to eat a croissant but if there is, that's certainly one of them
