I think violence should always be the last resort. But if this guy had simply walked out with a garbage can full of cigarettes with little to no consequences, that store could quickly become known as a place where people can steal without much resistance.

They didn’t kill him or seriously escalate it beyond stopping him and giving him a beating. Maybe it was a lesson he should have learned a long time ago. It also sends a pretty clear message to the rest of the neighborhood that the employees aren’t just going to roll over and let people clean out their store.

I don’t condone street violence, but in this situation, I have a hard time feeling sorry for him. The punishment may have been rough, but it was brought on entirely by his own actions.

People need to learn consequences. Those stores are often run by immigrants who don't have a lot of money. The guy has a few bruises, frankly I don't care. He can heal up in jail.

If there was an armed robbery, if he was shot and had to go to the hospital or even died it is unfortunate that a life would be lost but at the same time this guy chose to do such a thing.

I'm always surprised when Americans do things that can clearly mean they have to go to hospital. That guy isn't going to walk for a long time now. Maybe the first few hours, but the next 3 weeks mean expensive hospital stay or sit at home and think about what you did.

Worked for an Indian family that owned a chain of 7-11’s.

They kept a baseball bat behind the counter at every store.

Aluminum adult sized bats.
Never got robbed when I was working there but the baseball at my home store had dried blood on it.

Don’t steal from these people they won’t call the police because they didn’t really have police back home.

They will fuck you up and then call the cops.

I feel like you give up a lot of your rights while your committing a crime. Especially from the people who you are affecting. Just creating a situation where I might get so angry at them I could stop caring whether they live or die... They created that situation so that's really on them.
