I’m pretty sure the intent is to get into the wheelchair in time so that if they get attacked, it looks like someone beating a disabled person.

Yup! Many people think you cant defend yourself until you are hit first. Totally not true. Cops train on 10 FEET being "the death zone" - anyone within that distance CAN attack you and kill you. For civilians, this tightens up to arms length. Anyone who can swing on you is close enough to do you harm -- threatening gestures, even threatening WORDS, "im going to kill you MFer!" -- allows you to respond with enough force to neutralize the threat so you can get to safety. 

Nobody should ever WAIT until someone hits them first to decide, "yup, now its ok" -- they could catch you with a lucky shot and drop you, cause you to hit your head, etc. I actually have a relative who got involved in a group fight and got sucker punched, fell and broke his neck. Never wait if you feel threatened!

(Check your local laws about self defense, they may differ)

I was trained that the distance is about 22 feet.

Have your friend stand at 22 feet and on "go" see if they can draw a fake pistol (their finger in a gun shape in their pocket for this drill) and put it on you as the target before you reach them. People can close 22 feet faster than you think, especially if they have bad intentions.

Most especially if they have any sort of throwing weapon such as a knife and are even halfway decent at actually hitting their targets with it. Folks really have no idea how fast a half decently trained person can close that distance to attack them.

Just the point most people don't realize how quickly situations can turn dangerous or deadly. They tend to willingly let dangerous people walk directly in to their face before even reacting -- And as someone pointed out, its actually twice this distance.  Tueller Drill says 21 feet. 

I agree, someone wants to pop off -- you better be ready to go to!

Assault requires the victim to be aware of the threat and involves no physical contact, serving as an "attempted" or threatened harm.

Battery involves actual physical contact, however slight, and can occur even if the victim was unaware of the impending attack at the moment it happened.

Wait.. did you want him to post every single jurisdiction where it differs? Because his definition is the bare minimum in all states. Some states will give you battery even if it was just a threat. But ALL states consider the threat of violence as assault with the exception of new york, Colorado, and north Dakota.

You feel threatened. You fight until no longer feeling threatened. 

How would the person being lunged at know that this is a prank. And he stopped as soon as a bystander/the camera man, stepped in.  

This feels 100% appropriate.  It wasnt a guy in a potted bush costume. Or a metal statue prank scare. This was just some random dude making you think youre about to get punched in the head. I think the response was appropriate based on the potential threat.

Re watch the video. Any rando in their right mind would either run. Or swing and not stop.  Not everyone is trained in martial arts and knows to stop after 1 or 2 punches.

Most people would see a dude who is NOT SMALL, winding up to punch them in the back of the head. ANYONE who is trying to attack you from behind,  in a NON PRANK world, is DEFINITELY trying to hurt you. How was dude supposed to know it was a prank. He thought his life was at risk.

If you legit thought someone wanted to kill you, would you throw ONE punch and be like. "Alright. You learned your lesson. Dont try to kill me anymore!" idk what scenario you think a random person thinks theyre about to die and they dont fight blindly to make sure they live. 

If someone tried hitting me in the back of the head I would assume the worse and fight til I know FOR SURE Im no longer in danger.

No, I know that in a lot of jurisdictions they would waste their time on a fairly flimsy case. You can prove intent, which will turn into a he said she said. Legally yes someone could be charged, but only a smaller town with a minimal caseload would bother to bring it to the court. In any major city it wouldn't be charged at all. Just the reality of the world.
