I assume everyone is carrying a weapon for my own safety.

You just never know if some idiot will pull out a knife or gun.

u/Whole_Secretary5573 16h ago

Remember that other prankster got a belly shot and the shooter got no charges iirc.

66

u/Lexi_November 16h ago

He was charged with discharging a firearm inside a mall, but not for the shooting.

54

u/Thin_Bother8217 16h ago

He was charged with both. Acquitted on the shooting, convicted for discharging. Judge sentenced him to time served (about 8 months) and he got out same say as sentence:

u/Timely-Way-1769 16h ago

Cooks father is a piece of shit for defending his son. He was harassing that guy and trying to get a reaction to post and make money from.
So sick of these rage baiting losers making money off innocent people.

24

u/Thin_Bother8217 15h ago

Yeah, I saw his dad say how his son wouldn't (shouldn't?) stop doing what he loves or something stupid.

While his son was in the hospital after being shot for... doing something that was fucking stupid.

4

u/Sad_Pomegranate6322 8h ago

Effects of nature / nurture on cognitive development, you say?

This kid seems have to been fucked by both.

3

u/lejoop 5h ago

And the guy who shot him, just love shooting idiotic pranksters and he shouldn’t have to stop doing that!

1

u/dillweed67818 1h ago

I'm all for supporting my kids but I don't support them blindly, without question; sometimes the best way to support someone is to tell them they did something stupid.

1

u/Correct-Document-125 31m ago

"Apple doesn't fall far from the tree"

These people, the sheer amount of them, make it difficult to want to find empathy for humanity.

20

u/AydonusG 13h ago

I said it on the fucking McDonalds "prankster" video, I'll say it again- If you do pranks that involve illegal activity like assault (even phony ones like this) or trespassing, your punishment should be a complete shutdown of online activity, with prison sentences for those who break the conviction agreement. It's not hard to track the breach of conviction there.

7

u/FUCKTHISWEBSITEBANME 8h ago

I'm not sure how the US works, but in canada this is assault. If he had actually hit the guy it would've been battery.

Edit: I've actually got it mixed up, in the US this is assault too, but it's the US that has a seperate battery charge. This would also be assault in Canada.

1

u/AydonusG 8h ago

Yeah it should be that as well, but all these pranksters deserve a probation of posting issue

4

u/FUCKTHISWEBSITEBANME 8h ago

There really needs to be restrictions on filming in public. It's not 1996 anymore where maybe someone occasionally has a camcorder, everyone has a video recording device in their pocket, and it's having negative societal effects.

Also, the mass surveillance network's gotta go too. Widespread camera systems with license plate readers, facial recognition, gait detection, and cellphone tracking hardware? Fuck all that.

1

u/No-No-Aniyo 2h ago

Saw that last sentence and your name and got a little giggle lol

2

u/dillweed67818 1h ago

Yeah, ha ha, remember when hacking was a federal crime in the US and convicted hackers weren't allowed to own or use computers for like 10 years or something? People wouldn't be able to function in society now. They couldn't even apply for a job, but in a way I think we do need to go back to that. You're exactly right, no social media accounts allowed for internet stupidity crimes.

1

u/Correct-Document-125 30m ago

In a just world...

Best we can do is a few million dollars and extra rights.

1

u/ORNGSPCEMNKY 9h ago

Well he certainly got a reaction, too bad the guy didn’t squeeze off a few more.

1

u/Prestigious_Equal412 15h ago

Yeah, his son is apparently a scumbag. Tbf though, if your dad isn’t a shit dad, he should probably be ride or die. He didn’t say anything excusing his son’s behavior in the link posted; he only said the line into warranting physical force wasn’t crossed.

Did he come down on his son like a ton of bricks in private for being a scumbag and tell him he got what he deserved? Did he applaud his son for his son’s bs behavior? Idk, and he could be a good father or a shitty one for how he handled his son here. He might have said more problematic shit somewhere else that I haven’t seen, which would obviously change things.

A dad upset about his son getting shot, even if he is a dikbag, is honestly a fair position (as long as he doesn’t actually defend or validate his son’s actions).

He’s his dad. He’s supposed to biased towards his son. We’re supposed to be able to recognize that, and view it in that context.

Idk, I have absolutely zero to say in defense of his son. I don’t know that I even agree with the dad’s assessment (you definitely do need to cross a line for deadly force to be ok. I’m not sure I agree that line wasn’t crossed here though), but I recognize that as a dad he’s supposed to stand up for his son publicly. Where I was raised though, after standing up for his son publicly his son would have ALSO gotten a beat down for this shit in private, at home.

1

u/Silent-Dependent3421 14h ago

Was there aggression shown in the video or are we just saying pranksters deserve to be shot for being annoying? Haven't seen it just wondering

3

u/General_Cranberry_29 11h ago

He was following the guy around getting in his face, and he wasn't alone. Yeah, the guy probably feared he was going to get hurt.

0

u/BLK-Syndicate 6h ago

Not how that works.

2

u/Educational_Dust_932 13h ago

Yeah, there was aggression. And the shooter warned him to back off.

23

u/Lucky_Trouble9833 15h ago

Thats a load of shit. How tf you gonna be acquitted for defending yourself then be charged for how you defended yourself?

26

u/It_Just_Exploded 15h ago

I think it was because he carried his weapon onto property that was posted as "gun free". The mall is private property, the owner has the right to say weapons aren't allowed, so technically he broke that law.

Its one of those things that many legal CCW holders do and no ones the wiser unless you have to use it. And if you have to use it, its worth eating the lesser charge to protect yourself and/or family.

Yeah, its kinda fucked up, but thats how the law works sometimes unfortunately.

11

u/Fryboy11 13h ago

It doesn't stop at private property. States that allow open and or closed carry everywhere still carve exceptions so you can't carry in certain public buildings, State colleges are fine. Those public buildings you can't carry in are the state capital buildings where the lawmakers have offices and passed the law saying you can carry a gun anywhere, except near my office.

1

u/unlordtempest 11h ago

In Washington State, its illegal to carry firearm into places that sell drugs. Liquor stores, bars, weed stores, pharmacies, etc. However, you can be under the influence of any of these and legally carry.

1

u/os_beef 9h ago

Liquor stores are fine. Bars, areas of restaurants restricted to 21+, and weed shops are no go.

(1) It is unlawful for any person to enter the following places when he or she knowingly possesses or knowingly has under his or her control a weapon:

...

(d) That portion of an establishment classified by the state liquor and cannabis board as off-limits to persons under 21 years of age;

There's an exemption for business owners and their employees.

(11) Subsection (1)(d) of this section does not apply to the proprietor of the premises or his or her employees while engaged in their employment.

1

u/RJ_MacreadysBeard 7h ago

Restricted to 21+? You mean in the states, a kid under 21 years old can walk around with a gun? Seems insane to have people walking around with guns, but I never even considered how young they could legally be. Scary shit.

u/It_Just_Exploded 13h ago

I figured government property was a given, as i havent seen a single government building that allowed civilians to carry weapons.

2

u/UnimagineDragons 7h ago

Please stop using the word civilians when it's not the right word. Police are civilians. Military cannon military doesn't apply

1

u/ResinFinger 2h ago

Correct police are civilians but a lot of gun laws are supported by police as long as they are exempt from them.

-4

u/It_Just_Exploded 7h ago

You and everyone else knows what is meant by it in the context. Just accept it.

5

u/NPJenkins 9h ago

I bet that charge comes packaged nicely with a revocation of your CCW as well. Total bullshit, imho.

3

u/-Clem 1h ago

Yes it does. That way, the next time you have to defend yourself, you get a concealed weapon charge.

https://www.fox2detroit.com/news/fairlane-shooting-19-year-old-who-acted-self-defense-killing-mall-gunman-sentenced.amp

"What do you need a gun for protection in a mall, in the first place?" Asks the judge to the man who killed a mall shooter in defense of another.

1

u/NPJenkins 58m ago

I carry every time I’m in the mall. When you think about it, malls are vulnerable places because they’re areas of high traffic and they have been shot up multiple times in the past. What’s the point of having a CCW if you can’t carry in places where, statistically, you’re the most vulnerable?

1

u/dillweed67818 56m ago

Well that judge is dumb. He doesn't know about all the shootings and gang activity that was going on in certain malls in the late 80's into the 90's?

1

u/MAKs_Brick_House 13h ago

Then that’s a civil issue. Not criminal. A business prohibiting someone carrying a firearm doesn’t fall under law. In WV there are no laws regarding a private business not allowing firearms.

1

u/TheRealistoftheReal 1h ago

Except if…you know…state laws specifically make it a crime if the business has their property posted and you violate it.

1

u/General_Cranberry_29 11h ago

That would fall under civil wouldn't it? I guess it probably depends on the state 🫤

1

u/It_Just_Exploded 8h ago

It may vary by state, but in mine and the few nearby ones i'm familiar with its akin to trespassing. Which is a crime.

1

u/noreplyguy 5h ago

Indeed! Crazy you live in a country where everybody can have a gun, but when you walk through the entrance of the mall you suddenly have to trust everybody leaving it at home. And then what about when you’re on your way to the mall? You don’t take your gun then? I would also just take it with me and hope I don’t need to use it, just like I hope I don’t need to use it when I am allowed to carry.

0

u/StageVarious2812 14h ago edited 12h ago

He lost his gun because the jury found against his claim of self defense. The VA appeals court's verdict is available online; so is the jury's. Per the appeal's court "Here, the evidence, viewed in the light most favorable to the Commonwealth, was sufficient for a rational jury to find that Colie acted unlawfully in discharging his firearm and did not act in self-defense". Their verdict can be read here;https://www.vacourts.gov/static/opinions/opncavwp/0874244.pdf

2

u/It_Just_Exploded 13h ago

The self defense was ruled on, thats no longer up for debate. Though i think there being another charge because people were around is kinda dumb. If someone attacks you are you supposed to just let it happen since there's people around? The presence of others shouldn't be an automatic charge in cases of self defense (imo) it should be one of those things where if you defend yourself and don't hit anyone else aside from your attacker, then no charges. If you do end up hitting someone else, then you get the charge.

I think most of us have seen vids posted online of people getting absolutely blindsided and curbstomped in a crowd of people.

But like i said, illegal or not, if someone legit makes me believe my life or the life of my family member is in danger, i really wouldn't give a shit about that charge and it wouldn't even be a variable at the time.

0

u/StageVarious2812 13h ago

Brother if someone is clearly recording and just standing near you repeating a video on their phone you're not in mortal danger. Also it is completely up for debate, just because a jury acquits something doesn't automatically mean that it isn't valid to talk about. There was no one armed, no one attacking him, and no CLEAR and PRESENT danger. Annoying? Yes. Self-Defense? Not really. He shouldn't have fired his gun in that situation period and this is backed by the court's decision to find him guilty of a negligent discharge.

Also go ahead, you'll end up in the same situation and lose your ability to carry a firearm for life.

-1

u/PeachPassionBrute 13h ago

The self defense was ruled on, thats no longer up for debate.

That’s nonsense. Unless it went to the Supreme Court, even in a legal sense it isn’t exactly final. But anyone who isn’t acting on behalf of the government is welcome to have an opinion and debate as they please.

My views aren’t defined by courts.

0

u/NewACCTwhoDISENTERRY 13h ago

Just the one brain cell roaming around trying to figure out why we have courts instead of some random online.

2

u/NewACCTwhoDISENTERRY 13h ago

Two entirely different things.

He was right to shoot. That's why he was aquitted there.

He was not supposed to have a gun in the mall. How YOU feel about this being threatening doesn't matter to the law he broke. And to the jury who thank God isn't made of dumb fucks like you.

-1

u/StageVarious2812 13h ago

"Here, the evidence, viewed in the light most favorable to the Commonwealth, was sufficient for a rational jury tofind that Colie acted unlawfully in discharging his firearm and did not act in self-defense".

Page 11-12 of the court record accessible here; https://www.vacourts.gov/static/opinions/opncavwp/0874244.pdf

You can now stop pretending you're not dumber than rocks.

2

u/NewACCTwhoDISENTERRY 12h ago

Hey.. which charge is that one for again?

It's for the unlawful discharge? Oh yeah. Not the actual charge for hurting a human?

What happened to the charge for actually shooting the guy? Wanna find that one for me? Cause a jury can call me purple. If the case is about theft that doesn't really matter?

Let's post the full results next time. (:

"A jury on Thursday found a delivery driver not guilty in the shooting of a YouTube prankster who followed him around a mall food court earlier this year in Northern Virginia.

Alan Colie, 31, was acquitted of aggravated malicious wounding in the shooting of Tanner Cook, 21, who runs the “Classified Goons” YouTube channel. The jury was split though on two lesser firearms counts, and decided to convict him on one and acquit him on the other."

https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/northern-virginia/jury-divided-over-whether-delivery-driver-who-shot-youtube-prankster-acted-in-self-defense/3432763/?amp=1

You posted court documents on different charges. This man was aquitted for the actual shooting of a human. And was convicted of having a gun in the wrong place.

Not everyone is dumb enough to read one paper and stop thinking. Sorry.

Instead of getting charged at all, you can just not take your gun to Disneyland. No one is compelling you to be a coward.

-1

u/GaibonAmduscias 15h ago

How does a corporate policy make something a law?

3

u/NewACCTwhoDISENTERRY 15h ago

I own a place. I say no guns.

You bring a gun. On my property. A weapon that is not allowed.

"How is that a crime?"

Normally under trespassing. "People WITHOUT GUNS are allowed here"

  • Goes on that area WITH GUN*

surprise Pikachu face

1

u/browni3141 10h ago

This is like criminally charging someone for violating a restaurant dress code. It should not be criminal. Some really stupid states like NY have tried to make it criminal.

1

u/angelbelle 10h ago

It's trespassing private property, why is this so hard to understand?

Are you in favor of people entering your property without permission?

→ More replies (0)

3

u/JackomaybeWacko 14h ago

Do you have that same question about trespassing? Or do you understand the concept of that?

2

u/It_Just_Exploded 14h ago

Its not just a policy thing. If you're a concealed weapon carrier, you need to understand property rights. A property owner or lease holder 100% has the right to legally bar your weapon from their property, and it is enforceable.

Its like posting "No loitering" and then getting caught loitering by police. Once a crime (even a minor one) is commited, that can change things moving forward. Like simple battery, say you and someone else are arguing, things are heated, and you slap or punch them. Thats a fairly minor charge on its own, but if the cops find a gun on you, well now shits serious. The fact you commited a crime (in this case a violent crime even if a minor one) while in possession of a firearm just opened up a shitstorm, even if you never pulled it or made it known you had it. If you don't have a good lawyer, you're absolutely fucked.

I'm not a lawyer, I'm just trying my best to remember what i read in articles and saw in news clips back when this happened.

0

u/WhoSc3w3dDaP00ch 14h ago

Even with a good lawyer, still can be absolutely f-ed.

2

u/It_Just_Exploded 14h ago

No doubt, but without one its an absolute certainty.

Private property is treated very different from public property.

if I own property, I am allowed to set the rules however I see fit. I don't even have to respect your freedom of speech. If you say "I love the President" and I don't like that, I can ask you to leave. If you don't, I can trespass you. And if you still don't leave, you can be arrested.

Some churches also have rules about no firearms.

Social media sites like Reddit / Facebook, also don't have to respect your right to free speech. You can be banned for saying anything. It's not law, it's just policy on how private entities work.

Plus states have specific laws about people who conceal carry.

0

u/h3lium-balloon 13h ago edited 13h ago

Depends on the state really. Some states have laws that say private property owners can limit the legal ability to carry on their property by putting up a sign (it usually has to meet certain criteria) whereas some states say the any place open to the public isn’t allowed to restrict legal carry. Like many legal issues, know your local and state laws.

Edit: any private property open to the public to clarify.

0

u/NewACCTwhoDISENTERRY 13h ago

There are literally zero states without exceptions

0

None.

Not even the reddest state in the union will let you take your gun everywhere.

2

u/h3lium-balloon 13h ago

I didn’t say everywhere. I said some states let private property owners make the determination. I was answering a question about corporate policy and law.

1

u/notapunk 15h ago

I feel this is one of those compromises that occur in jury rooms. No one wanted to see the guy get in serious trouble, but one or more felt he couldn't just not be convicted of something

1

u/Joel22222 15h ago

It’s Virginia.

1

u/PerspectiveNew3375 14h ago

Welcome to america where government has a monopoly on violence.

1

u/Candid-Fan6638 12h ago

Guy served no jail time and you're still complaining...............

1

u/NotOnTheEpsteinList 10h ago

Ask the dude in Atlanta that stopped a mass shooter.

1

u/Next-Lavishness-9101 8h ago

In that mall case, it was private property. In that mall you’re not allowed to have a concealed weapon. So the State was ok with the self defense shooting part, but the dude got in trouble for having and using the gun in a location he was not supposed to.

1

u/czar_el 4h ago

I mean, yeah. Firing a weapon in self defense in your own home or in an unpopulated alley is very different than firing a weapon in a crowded mall. Context matters. They train cops and soldiers to be aware of what is behind/around a target they engage, and to disengage if there's a risk of hitting innocent bystanders (they don't always do it, but they're supposed to). The same goes for lawful civilian shooters.

1

u/dillweed67818 1h ago

This is actually pretty common. The aggressor becomes the victim and cries foul even though they caused the situation, so their lawyers bring up stupid stuff technical BS and then the judge feels obligated to throw them a bone, sort of like a consolation prize for losing. "No he is not guilty of shooting you, you brought that on yourself, but yes, he should not have fired a gun in that gun free zone, so we'll give him a little slap on the wrist."

There are also a lot of situations where someone will win their criminal case but then still be sued successfully, by the victim, in a civil case. Like, they might be acquitted of the crime but then still have to pay the guy's medical bills and stuff.

0

u/danieldan0803 15h ago

If you had the right to defend yourself but do so in an unsafe manner, like firing a weapon in a crowded area. It also likely was because the jury was split and this was the compromise to prevent a hung jury. Better this way than the jury moving towards a guilty verdict.

-5

u/SkeettheVandelBuster 15h ago edited 15h ago

I’m glad he got convicted. He deserved more. He almost murdered someone. I get that he was scared, but he literally shot someone in the chest who had done nothing at that point to harm him physically. If shooter instead punched him in the face or kicked him in the balls, justified. Shooting him??? I work as a lawyer and in my state, self-defense has to be proportional. You can’t respond with lethal force unless you are in genuine fear of your life. He literally shot a guy who bugged him for 30 seconds

6

u/RussianBot71137 15h ago

Look at the size of the bully, one punch can cause serious harm. He approached in aggressive manner, by watching the video it seems as if he was about to strike the guy. So, no, your argument would fail with me if I was in a jury.

0

u/SkeettheVandelBuster 15h ago

I didn’t see anything suggesting he was about to swing. Juries are wrong all the time. Idk Virginia’s laws, but I have seen dudes in WAY more trouble than this guy was get years in prison for defending themselves against an actual valid threat. They didn’t even have guns either.

People are glad bc this was an annoying youtube prankster. Imagine this was an equally big special needs adult or non-english speaker? And they got shot for annoying someone for 30 seconds

2

u/Substantial_Dish_887 15h ago

Imagine this was an equally big special needs adult or non-english speaker?

if an non-english speaker is constantly aggresively getting close to the person backing away? do they also not speak "human body language" in you imaginary scenario?

as for special needs person? if they are special needs to the point of acting in such a manner they are serious special needs and should have a guardian about to stop the situation from escalating to that point. if that guardian fails it's on them and would be a tragic event caused by their negligence.

2

u/NewACCTwhoDISENTERRY 14h ago

It falls apart before that even.

"Imagine if this scenario was entirely different. That would change things I bet!!"

This isn't a lawyer. It's a cosplayer on reddit and they aren't good at it.

→ More replies (14)

1

u/NewACCTwhoDISENTERRY 15h ago

Imagine the scenario was entirely different. Wouldn't that be different??

You are not a lawyer. Or you're the worst lawyer to ever exist.

2

u/rsta223 14h ago

I think it could very easily be reasonable to be in fear of great bodily harm or loss of life in that circumstance.

0

u/SkeettheVandelBuster 14h ago

Explain. All I see is a big guy annoying someone

1

u/rsta223 14h ago

Aggressively getting right in someone's face and repeatedly advancing as they try to retreat is a common pre fight indicator, and contrary to Hollywood, a single strong, well placed punch can be enough for life changing injury or death.

1

u/SkeettheVandelBuster 14h ago

It’s apparent that this case will probably just embolden people to shoot first think later in the future. As if there wasn’t already enough needless gun violence in this country. Should have known better than to expect more from reddit

2

u/NewACCTwhoDISENTERRY 15h ago

You're an idiot.

That's okay. Just don't bother folks and you won't get shot. (:

Act like you'll hurt someone then be surprised they are in fear of harm?

You're the one lawyer who is the first with downs syndrome aren't you??

0

u/SkeettheVandelBuster 15h ago

Nah, but the prosecutor obviously was. You also revealed yourself as an idiot who is too irresponsible to actually be on a jury as you make up your mind without being presented with more than a sliver of evidence. I pray you don’t concealed carry as it seems the first guy who annoys you is dying

→ More replies (6)

1

u/Substantial_Dish_887 15h ago

You can’t respond with lethal force unless you are in genuine fear of your life.

you can not possibly be a good lawyer if you can not argue for someone being able to "fear for their life" without having been physically harmed first.

0

u/SkeettheVandelBuster 15h ago

Nothing about that situation should make a rational person afraid for their life. If that made him afraid, then he is the type of person to shoot more people. Thankfully he at least lost concealed carry

Classic Tanner behavior

1

u/StreetCrzyBiteUrFace 12h ago

He should've been able to fight that out on bail. The bail system is broken in the USA. If someone has no money, they should have the same rights as a homeowner or a billionaire, who almost certainly fight their cases out on bail. And cases fought from outside jail have a much higher chance of being successful.

TL/DR: The Justice System in the USA is run by classist pieces of shit.

1

u/runningoutofideasjzz 10h ago

How does that make sense? So the court felt it was ok to defend himself with a firearm, but it shouldn’t have been in a mall?

1

u/OldenPolynice 2h ago

He got out promptly, 8 months later.

1

u/TheRealistoftheReal 1h ago

Such a bizzare conclusion. Under the circumstances it was acceptable to shoot someone, but not while inside a mall.

1

u/AdOnly1618 1h ago

It’s crazy how the shooting is justified but not the shot he took while being justified in shooting

If you don’t think the courts are rigged, there ya go

1

u/TraitorMacbeth 8m ago

Does time served mean he'd already been in jail 8 months?

5

u/Whole_Secretary5573 16h ago

Ty for the correction. I remember it the way you said it now.

4

u/Lexi_November 16h ago

I hope that charge was dropped because it is silly to say he should have taken the man robbing him outside to shoot. 🫩😅

1

u/BrianKappel 16h ago

The signs on the door about not carrying weapons inside matter. There were alcohol licenses inside.

1

u/CashEducational4986 16h ago

Generally speaking, at least in my state, that would only apply for trespassing laws. If the business found out they had a firearm they could ask them to leave, if they refused they would be committing armed trespassing which is a felony. Generally we would not consider it as a factor in a self defense shooting here, since it's irrelevant to the actual legality of the shooting.

It's kind of like if a convicted felon was involved in a self defense shooting. The fact that he had a firearm could be a separate legal issue since he isn't legally allowed to have one, but it doesn't remove the justification from the self defense and automatically make the shooting into a murder

1

u/BrianKappel 16h ago

Hmm... I may be mixing up details between this and something else. I can be bad about that.

1

u/PinkSodaBoy 7h ago

For a second I thought that 'discharging a firearm inside a mall' was the actual name of the offence, which would have been the most American thing you could charge someone for!

5

u/Limo_Wreck77 16h ago

No. Didnt hear that one.

Got a link?

I'm not surprised more of these idiots aren't shot.

The dipshit was born to parents who named him Tanner. He was doomed from birth.

1

u/Castle_of_Jade 2h ago

You shouldn’t be surprised honestly. Most gun owners are responsible people who understand actions have consequences. Most people aren’t going to shoot you for being an annoying prick. Most. Some people may just feel like you’re getting in their space and they feel unsafe, intimidated, or trapped. The world is full of people existing next to each other.

6

u/Ok_Subject1265 13h ago

They interviewed him in the hospital and he said he had no plans to quit “doing pranks.” Okey doke. Better but that pudding by the case then.

1

u/Square-Debate5181 12h ago

The delivery guy in mall or was he just getting food for himself and these two guys just harrassing him with phone trandlators or something?

1

He deserved it badly!

Lol good

It’s a shame that he lived

Or the 2 ladies fucking with the worker at mcdonalds. He smashed them them with a pipe he had tucked away. He was just doing his job after being released from prison for murder and these ladies found out.

1

u/Ill-Environment3329 38m ago

Yeah as it should be, it was legitimate self defense. That guy had no idea what was going on. Yeah in hindsight you can look back and say he wasn’t a threat but think from his perspective, he couldn’t possibly know what was going on.

22

u/MetalTrek1 16h ago

Or who has PTSD and can just snap. Or who is just plain crazy.

8

u/drsweetscience 11h ago

I enjoy a saying that is still new to me,

This is what happens when someone pretending to be crazy runs into someone pretending to be sane.

8

u/Homerpaintbucket 16h ago

Especially right now. There are a lot of us just pretending to be sane.

5

u/Vampire_Number 12h ago

I have PTSD. I have unintentionally punched or kicked two friends who tried to jump scare me. At this point I just bring it up casually with friends that I don’t do well with being scared. Funny enough this does also mean that I can relax when I know there isn’t any actual danger, so I love haunted houses for that reason. It’s such a refreshing change to actually getting jumped and beaten up.

3

u/SinnersHotline 9h ago

Just remember if you go full crazy, make sure the other person isn't willing to go insane..

11

u/Successful_Shoe_8083 12h ago

as someone who very much grew up in a neighborhood where everyone had a knife or a gun this is typically the advice I give.

Also - don't fuck with people with trauma, their shit will kick in before they even notice.

source: Have trauma.

1

u/lockdown_lard 8h ago

If it's any use, there's a new intensive treatment that combines EMDR and CBT that has been very effective for trauma and C-PTSD that's otherwise treatment-resistant.

1

u/Successful_Shoe_8083 59m ago

Been doing therapy for over a decade, am in a much better place, still wake up with horrifying nightmares of violence.

Thank you though.

1

u/dundunndon 16h ago

yep when I got a taser to stay safe from hobos and felt like a tough guy then when I got hassled by one I pulled out my taser and told him to back up and leave me alone and he backed up and pulled up his shirt to show me a gun in his pants and then I took off on my bike OK BYE

1

u/CashEducational4986 16h ago

A taser requires a good spread between the darts and a good connection in order to have any significant effect. If you miss, which is fairly likely, you only have 1-2 shots with most taser models. Those aren't odds I would like to have in an actual self defense situation. And that isn't even mentioning how someone with a gun will likely still be able to shoot you regardless of being tased, unless you're causing NMI in both arms which is very unlikely. Or even how someone with a knife is still going to stab you if they're already close to you when you tase them, which is almost guaranteed since you're reacting to their initial attack.

I would never recommend a taser for personal self defense. There's a reason law enforcement is generally only supposed to use one when their friend is already pointing a gun at the person they plan to tase.

1

u/dundunndon 15h ago

yep mine is not that cool. it is one of those jabby stabby shockers. it has an insane alarm button that I've only ever accidentally pressed in the grocery store and scared the sht out of everybody around me. i feel like it is mostly for scaring bad guys away. before I got any defenove weaponry, just threatening somebody with mace saved me from getting stabbed. i have mace as well but that loud taser is jarring for anybody tweaking hard and scared of the police.

1

u/CashEducational4986 15h ago

A drive stun will only cause minor pain, which will certainly not deter anyone intent on killing you.

1

u/shadowmib 16h ago

Yeah it's lucky the dude didn't pull a knife and filet him

1

u/Right_Today_356 16h ago

"...some idiot" I don't think the guy with a weapon for self defense is the idiot here.

1

u/koyaani 16h ago

To be fair, most people are idiots

2

u/Bauld_Man 14h ago

"The idiot prankster will be killed by some idiot with a gun, and the idiot jury and the idiot judge will see it presented by the idiot prosecutor because there's an idiot recording".

Fair play.

1

u/BorgQuingus67 16h ago

Exactly, you never know who's crazy enough to shoot you for fucking with them. So it's better to just not intentionally antagonize strangers.

1

u/No_Clerk_6490 15h ago

This is why Australians fight so much, not many guns and rarely knives.

They use glasses instead, at the pub when drunk to “glass” someone. Almost every late night bar in Kings Cross banned glass and used plastic.

1

u/GenTenStation 15h ago

Or worse.. their gentlemen’s sausage

1

u/coopASR 15h ago

This is how we grew up in the Balkans. You never know, don't fuck with strangers

1

u/ThaRedHoodie 15h ago

I don't think having a weapon makes someone an idiot, but getting someone to feel like they need a weapon as a prank certainly does.

1

u/CarolyneSF 15h ago

That guy had a very quick right and left who needs a gun!!

1

u/Aromatic-Activity-71 15h ago

Or, god forbid, a spoon.

1

u/RevolutionaryWay7107 14h ago

I always have a knife on me; don't leave home without it, sleep with it in reach, and have it within reach whole showering. Ready to kill zombies at any moment.

1

u/Jamb9876 14h ago

That is my thought. Don’t finish this fight, be like Enders and finish the future fights.

I worked at a sporting good store that sold guns, but I don’t have one. A customer asked for help with a holster and I told him that I was not knowledgeable. He said “you must know kung fu or something.” I said no, and he asked how I defended myself. I told him I try not to do things that will get me attacked by strangers. He was still confused.

1

u/ItsHisMajesty 14h ago

I carry one for mine…

1

u/snachyderm72 13h ago

Absolutely. You can get angry at people ...driving, walking around, etc...people doing things that annoy...but honestly you have no idea who has a gun, a knife, brass knuckles, whatever...or what they are willing to do. .unless absolutely necessary it is always the best idea to keep calm and not instigate. You can be highly trained and well armed but you just never know...

1

u/_Svankensen_ 13h ago

Eh, in my country you can be sure of at least the second, and almost sure of the first. Still, a beating of this calibre may very well be lethal.

1

u/bizurk 13h ago

A good time to think about this is when someone does something idiotic / aggressive / dangerous on the road.

1

u/StreetCrzyBiteUrFace 12h ago

Or some good person might pull out a knife or gun, simply to defend them and theirs. But that's a good assumption. Always assume the other person is armed and make any decisions on action based on that assumption. I'll be 62 in a few weeks. Partially disabled. Walk with a cane and can't scratch my ankles to save my own life. My parameters have moved. I'm a little on the skinny side and 5' 10." If any bully within 40-50 lbs (and 6" taller than me or less) pushes me into a one-on-one, I'll still throw down without a weapon. On the other hand, if someone sucker punches me, or they want to try me with more than one guy on their side? They'll immediately find out what I'm carrying. I'll take a little ass-whooping if it's only one guy. I'll get some licks in too. But the shit I would wade into grinning in my youth I wouldn't even try nowadays. I'll walk off even with some really inappropriate shit being said, if it's only being said to me. Say it to my girl? That's a different story. But weapons should be for situations that are worse than one-on-one, women being attacked, or for really defenseless guys. Or if you're solely responsible for transporting family away from whatever situation or location you're in.

“I assume everyone is carrying a weapon for my own safety”

I wish everyone would carry weapons for my own safety.

1

u/ForgotToCarryTheOne 12h ago

> I assume everyone is carrying a weapon for my own safety.

> You just never know if some idiot your victim will pull out a knife or gun.

1

u/Fuzzy_Straitjacket 11h ago

This is what I tell my UK friends when they visit me in LA. If you get into an argument, just walk away. Someone cuts you off, let them drive away.

1

u/Dear_Chasey_La1n 10h ago

This, I'm not American but I'm surprised people don't get shot/stabbed in return for being a knob.

I do like the two 90 degrees swinging though, left boink, right boink, left boink, especially the added sound effects ho ho ho ho ho. Fantastic move. Closing with the DAMN! 10/10.

1

u/Massive_Low6000 3h ago

I don’t have the same loud mouth I did when I was young. I even grew up in TX! I think guns became much more accessible, legally and illegally in the 2010s. Anyone could have one and lately it seems like people aren’t scared to show their pew pews either.

1

u/bino420 10h ago

I used to go through the most druggie/homeless area of my city every week. now once a month. but I rode my ebike before it got fucked, and I had to park it down there for 10 minutes at a time. so I bought and carried a knife after a couple visits, thinking I scare off anyone who tries to steal shit or whatever. I know they all have em. the first day I had it, in thinking "who am I kidding? Im not actually gonna defend myself cause if a dude pulls a knife, I'm just bolting. and he can have my shit if it doesn't escape with me. I prefer my abdominal area to be holeless."

1

u/neo_sporin 10h ago

My hs bio teacher was a biiig joker. One day he said “don’t be like me to people you don’t know. I once made a joke to a guy at the gas station and the guy pulled a gun on me and asked ‘what the fuck did you just say to me?’”

He went on to say ‘some people you can tell they aren’t right in the head by looking at them. Other people are holding on by a thread and you don’t want to be the one to make them snap’

1

u/jeremyascot 9h ago

Guns don’t kill people, rappers do

1

u/SillyImprovement4230 9h ago

Is the gun or knife carrier really the idiot in this situation?

1

u/TheFeenyCall 8h ago

If someone pulls a "prank" on someone that threatens harm then pulling a knife on them isn't being an idiot. The idiot is the one acting out the "prank" - don't get it twisted

1

u/IDontKnowAboutThat_ 7h ago

Looks like this guy was carrying two weapons 💪🏻💪🏻

1

u/redjinx 7h ago

I don't think everyone is carrying a weapon for YOUR own safety. Buh dum tss

1

u/mologav 7h ago

You must be American

1

u/Pyroll2206 6h ago

Even in france it is cultural to carry a 10cm blade because you need to be able to make food

1

u/Wilting_Rose_718 6h ago

I saw a guy walk out of a Safeway in the middle of Phoenox with a camo gun on his belt plus and camo knife right behind it and climb into a giant pickup....I mind my own business

1

u/Oggel 6h ago

Even if they don't have a weapon, people regularly die from a single punch.

Anyone getting into fights in the streets is a fucking moron.

I'd fight as a last resort to defend myself or someone else, but I damn well would exhaust any other alternative before I do. I don't care if it hurts my pride or if people think I'm a pussy, I just don't want me or anyone else to get hurt. Nobody getting hurt is a win for me.

1

u/OpTicSkYHaWk 5h ago

Or a cock /s

1

u/tsida 3h ago

Chicago, Milwaukee, Detroit etc... in the rust belt everyone is strapped.

1

u/EastRoom8717 3h ago

Is the person pulling a weapon in that case the actual idiot?

1

u/PiccoloAwkward465 2h ago

Yeah. I don’t usually carry my gun but I do usually have a very quick open knife. This smells like skibidi suburbanites who have some idealized view of the world. Come at some people and you will get touched.

1

u/Own_Candidate9553 2h ago

I was walking to work downtown one morning, and a rough looking dude just abruptly crossed the street without looking. A red car had to slam his brakes, so of course he laid on his horn. I ended up walking behind the drunk/high/whatever dude some distance back.

In a wild coincidence, red car then pulled over right in front of the dude to let his buddy out. I see the dude immediately pull a little knife out of his pocket, snap it open, a hide it behind his back.

I really thought I was going to see someone get stabbed on my morning commute. Luckily I think the guy was just worried he was getting jumped, and when the red car friend walked off, he out it away. But I'll never forget how there was no hesitation, he had that knife ready.

1

u/ElectricKoolAidPower 2h ago

I assume everyone is carrying a weapon because I am. That’s the weird part about carrying. You think you’re gonna be Billy Badass but in the end you just come to the realization that anybody could also be holding one.

1

u/krostybat 2h ago

How do you deal with life with that mindset ?

It seems stressfull.

What do you do if someone pass in front of you in a line ?

1

u/Exciting_Contest_222 1h ago

I remembered I got my mall security on me for my leatherman multi-tool that was clipped to my belt.

They walked me out of the store while I was shopping. It was either I go out and leave my leatherman in my car or they confiscate it.

Their security was telling me that the blade can be a weapon. But I been in that mall atleast 1-2x a month for years, and never got issues bringing my multi-tool.

u/Other-Improvement410 1h ago

Thank god I don't live where you do...then again, way fewer pricks where I am

There used to be rules to this shit. Hasn’t been that way in a LONG time. Better to just walk on these days because you’re 100% correct. Street skids will pull guns, knives, stomp heads into the pavement. It’s insane anyone risks this for internet points.

1

u/Starwars_femboy 15h ago

When was it ever not like this?
