Agonal breathing. Only his brainstem is still active.

Agonal breathing is a severe medical emergency characterized by abnormal, involuntary gasping, snorting, or labored breathing. It is not true breathing, but rather a brainstem reflex that occurs when the brain is completely deprived of oxygen. It is a critical sign that a person is near death and most commonly indicates that they are in cardiac arrest
