I spend a lot of time on the water as a fisherman. This dumbass risked his life for a raft. Glad it ~~ worked~~ didnt' work out. Next best alternative was a helicopter to rescue him from his own stupidity when he couldn't get back to shore.

The wind could have just as easily taken him out to sea, and after all his paddling, he would eventually grow tired and not have the strength to get back to shore.
This has happened. People can quickly end up miles from shore in unpredictable conditions without realizing it’s even happening.

people this behavior is actually quite risky. he is in danger. him going downwind is very easy compared to the difficulty he is going to have coming back to where he started. its called "windage". his body is like sail in that position for him to paddle and when he turns around the windage (sail) force will be significant and he may not be able to overcome that by paddling, all the while getting more and more tired. and even though he can lie flat and paddle with his hands that might not be enough either. anyone in this situation in the future dont go down wind unless you know you can get back some other way.

What’s really funny is that by approaching from upwind he is causing the wind eddies that create the flip motion. If he went wide by 10yds or so it would stay flatter and he’d get it.

We were on an overnight canoe trip on the Ausable River in Michigan with many friends, all had their gear they needed for the trip in their canoes. We all pulled to bank because one of our friends canoes tipped. I noticed my friends canoe unbanked and started a trip off it's own down the current so I the everything down, jumped in mine and got to it, tied it to mine and rowwed 2 loaded canoes upstream about 200 yards. When I got there my 38 year old heart was vibrating in my chest, I thought that was it.

Several years ago my family was swimming in a bay in Greece on a very windy day, when my daughter lost control of her inflatable tube. We watched it blow away out to sea and waved goodbye. No possible recovery. We leisurely packed up from our beach site and drove several miles around the bay to a fish restaurant on the beach and enjoyed a nice (but breezy) lunch. About halfway through lunch I looked over my wife’s shoulder toward the water, squinted, and realized that I was seeing the same inflatable tube heading almost directly towards our restaurant. Almost. It ended up right in the hands of a young girl, who hopefully held onto it better.
