Any clue as to what motivated it to do such a thing?

Did you ask it why it was crossing the road?
I need to know the answer, I hate those jokes.

Well? What did it do when it got to the other side?

It got the mail from the mailbox, returned to the house, and sorted the bills from the junk mail.

I keep seeing chickens on the edges of roads and I'm just like why? Are people just letting their chickens run free range in the yard? Or are they escaping? How hard could it be to keep a chicken locked down? Are chickens good at escaping?

I was 48 years old when I realized what the joke was actually about. Very dark.

Once upon a time, when I was working at a Navy lab, we had an infestation of geese.
They tried all sorts of things to run ‘em off, from canine patrols to outline cutouts of wolves or coyotes.
Buuuuuutanyway, I was leaving work one day, and a line of geese was walking down the edge of the road. When they got to a crosswalk, THEY TURNED AND CROSSED THE ROAD!!!
It tickles me to this day.
