I’m old now, is Roblox just the younger generation’s version of the websites full of Flash games that briefly ruled our attention back in my younger days?

u/joestaff 19h ago
Pretty much, but it was all hyper focused in their singular ecosystem and rife with shady monetization aimed at children.

u/TheCone1301 18h ago
Also with the side of terrible moderation and the presence of predators so big it became a hot topic on the internet and caused investigations into it in the USA

Imagine flash games, but on one ecosystem and monetized like modern mobile games. Honestly probably even worse than that, especially since Roblox aims this stuff at kids

u/FewAdvertising9647 19h ago
to some extent. to me, the flash game industry essentially transitioned to being the mobile game industry, along with it was the social browser games like the ones by zynga. The connection of the two essentially what pushed mobile game monetization. the younger generations flash games IMO are mobile games, and roblox is just the younger generations sandbox game like garry's mod.

u/hextree 11h ago
Yes, but with more pedos.

u/Chiiro 17h ago
Pretty much but with significantly more illegal child employment and pedophiles. The dude that owns it wants to make a 17+ dating service on there too. I'm so glad there's multiple lawsuits against them.
2
u/CantThinkOfANameHa 14h ago
The lawsuits just ask for age verification, and the precedent being set with Roblox lawsuits is already being used to pressure other companies (and influencing laws) into forcing users to verify their age.. the lawsuits aren’t good
1
u/hextree 9h ago
Age verification may not be good for most sites, but for a site which is literally supporting and providing access to child grooming and molestation, it's probably necessary.
2
u/CantThinkOfANameHa 9h ago
That can and is already being said about every site by governments and lawmakers dumbass
2
u/hextree 9h ago
And for Roblox it is true.
1
u/CantThinkOfANameHa 9h ago
It’s more true in the cases of discord, telegram, & Snapchat but sure, they’re adding age verification too anyways

u/Zomgzombehz 18h ago
Yeah, and like, Gmod was already home of many of these types of mini games. Just glad kids got a chance to play without creepy racist....oh wait.
4
u/zendrix1 17h ago
Yea, but they also steal kids' money and are much more addicting despite the name of the website we all used to play a lot of them back in the day
2
u/sargonas 8h ago
Pretty much that, yeah, but with significantly more grooming of children by predators.

I haven't played it in almost a decade but its a bit like websites with a lot of flash games but as a game engine. Essentially you go to the website, pick out a game to play and it launches it as an app on your computer. The main difference is all the games are online and you have the same username and character in all of them
1
u/Kodamacile 15h ago
It's just Garry's Mod 2.0.
2
u/repocin PC 13h ago
Isn't it older than gmod?
I keep being susprised by how it's still as popular as it is despite all the blatant problems with it over the years
0
u/Kodamacile 13h ago
Same age, basically. But no one knew about Roblox until about 2010, while Gmod already had established itself as a DIY game creation platform. Roblox didn't get really big, until 2016.

In otherword we going to see a ton of Minecraft mod clones pop up .....great

u/RosieQParker 19h ago
Fixing the problem of rampant child predator activity by shifting it off-platform.

u/SpaceInvader1980 15h ago
At least game devs won't have to deal with Roblox's shitty moderation now that they can move away from it.

u/Docteh 20h ago
Roblox games are already escaping into vrchat. well, some of the shitty ones at least.
21
u/Routine-Duck6896 20h ago
Yeah and its obnoxious af esp now that vrchat has their own premium currency lol

u/Cymelion 18h ago
This feels like trying to get ahead of regulations like they know something is coming.

u/Catsssssssss 18h ago
Oh no.. Pestilence is escaping quarantine? At least I could control so my son couldn't play Roblox..
1
u/Little-Witness-1201 9h ago
Not sure how this effectively any different from flash games in the past
1
u/Catsssssssss 5h ago
They were mostly garbage, but at least there weren't thousands of questionable other players and the constant nagging about buying meaningless in-game garbage for, effectively, real money. Flash games got boring after a minute, and you would leave. In Roblox, kids keep getting held hostage in a flashy lobby trying to rope them back in

u/FoxyGoddessX 20h ago
Hopefully the people in charge of Roblox face prosecution

u/FoxyGoddessX 19h ago
Oh I know with the way this current US administration that will never happen. But one can always hope

u/CadeMan011 16h ago
Yeah, but they're not gonna do well on their own because the only reason anybody plays them is because they're in roblox
4

u/MCWizardYT 16h ago
This is good for the few very well made games on the platform, but it also means all the shit games are also going to escape

u/Kodamacile 13h ago
The moment Roblox games get put up against actual games, they're going to get obliterated.
3
u/AaronBonBarron 7h ago
They're going to learn very quickly that the rest of the gaming world doesn't take kindly to their aggressive bait and switch microtransaction monetisation model.

I mean, can you imagine an old-school Rocket Arena style game reimagined for today? Or the multitude of Obby's made as their own game and style? Or, Phantom Forces being made into a standalone? That sounds cool as fuck.

u/Snelly1998 20h ago
Roblox is a game engine
No different than unreal engine
I don't see why this is bad
58
u/Jaaaco-j PC 20h ago
well i dont like to support a platform that protects pedophiles on principle so i miss out on a few good games
this probably won't fix that either, as i assume roblox would do the publishing and have their cut.
10
u/Stolehtreb 19h ago
No different?
13
u/Kornillious 19h ago
Thats like saying "Sweden and North Korea are both countries, so no different" lol
-10
u/Snelly1998 19h ago
No different there's the Roblox platform, which is akin to epic games
Then there's Roblox studio, which is akin to unreal engine
9
u/sircontagious 19h ago
The sales and revenue split model is slavery tier. The company shouldn't really be encouraged.
1
u/Prisinners 13h ago
As someone that has played several Roblox games with my niblings over the years, there are actually some decent games on Roblox. There has been a trend of some more popular games with interesting premises moving off of Roblox for one reason or another in recent years (although I couldn't say how prominent this trend is overall). Notably those titles had to largely or completely be rebuilt in a new engine whereas this is presumably allowing you to effectively use Roblox as the engine. This might be their way to stem the bleeding from devs trying to leave the ecosystem but its hard to say.
1
u/wizzard419 12h ago
Considering those games more or less will die without an audience... I am not sure they are going to follow.

1
u/Discobastard 6h ago
Does this then remove accountability from them if shady things happen in these standalone versions?
1
u/SpyderZT 2h ago
Blech. We have Enough Shovelware without providing push button shit "live service app" publication. ;?

weird decision from Roblox. this was sorta their only "safety net" with some games. most creators went "this place sucks but I'm not gonna start over" and stayed because of it.
then again, that's their loss i guess. good for creators.

so games that steal content from existing games will now be on the same stores as them. We're about to see a new fresh hell of friendslop.

Wow bunch of copied games leaving Roblox to be played as standalone
People should play the original instead lol
