flash games had tons of creativity and their own IP and actually were their own games.

the difference is roblox encourages copying popular games and makes their platform more capable to copy popular games and boost clones. They dont reward originality.

Flash didnt promise children tons of money and then refuse to pay either because someone living on a certain island told them to so "children could be indoctrinated into the economy".

basically turning kids into digital sharecroppers, sharecropping was invented by business owners to get around slavery and worker rights laws after the civil war.

even as evil as Adobe is, they still didnt act like Roblox

Actually, there was a "developer" in Russia who taught students how to make flash games and stole their work to publish as his own. He "made" several hundred games, I believe.

Definitely an endeavor of a different scale, though!

Tbh some of the games i hear about seem interesting or at least i could see it being kids/teenagers trying out game development and could become our star gamedevs of tomorrow.

Roblox's code language Luau is a superset of Lua 5.

Lua is super commonly used as a game scripting language - a ton of games officially use it as their modding language, like GTA, Factorio, Civ, etc. - so they'd actually be ahead of the pack if they want to get into that; and there's several game engines that use Lua for scripting, like Defold.

It's honestly a pretty good jumping-off point if they want to get into indie game dev.

*knowing lua being the jumping-off point. I wouldn't touch the Roblox engine with a ten-foot pole.

its a code base targeted to kids and keep them dependent on their platform too.

even if programming is easier to learn if you have prior experience, you still need to code way more complex stuff when roblox makes it as easy for you.

There are multiple groups. I played Roblox in 2008 in a super poor family on a donated laptop with a broken screen and that gave me my love of gaming that still carries through to today.

Roblox is as bad as most people imagine but it is SUPER accessible which is why kids play it.

It was crazy to play it, age completely out of it, then ten years later hear my young sisters talking about it, then now 8 years later have it be widely discussed.

I've had this game in my head for 18 years and all the problems described now existed for all 18 of them (though back then the monetization was slightly less aggressive)

to some extent. to me, the flash game industry essentially transitioned to being the mobile game industry, along with it was the social browser games like the ones by zynga. The connection of the two essentially what pushed mobile game monetization. the younger generations flash games IMO are mobile games, and roblox is just the younger generations sandbox game like garry's mod.

I haven't played it in almost a decade but its a bit like websites with a lot of flash games but as a game engine. Essentially you go to the website, pick out a game to play and it launches it as an app on your computer. The main difference is all the games are online and you have the same username and character in all of them

Same age, basically. But no one knew about Roblox until about 2010, while Gmod already had established itself as a DIY game creation platform. Roblox didn't get really big, until 2016.

They were mostly garbage, but at least there weren't thousands of questionable other players and the constant nagging about buying meaningless in-game garbage for, effectively, real money. Flash games got boring after a minute, and you would leave. In Roblox, kids keep getting held hostage in a flashy lobby trying to rope them back in

As someone that has played several Roblox games with my niblings over the years, there are actually some decent games on Roblox. There has been a trend of some more popular games with interesting premises moving off of Roblox for one reason or another in recent years (although I couldn't say how prominent this trend is overall). Notably those titles had to largely or completely be rebuilt in a new engine whereas this is presumably allowing you to effectively use Roblox as the engine. This might be their way to stem the bleeding from devs trying to leave the ecosystem but its hard to say.
