This article has some good points but at the same time puts way too much emphasis on Physint. We don’t even know what the game would be like and the author is acting like Sony had everything riding on it.
I don't know why people are acting like Sony letting Kojima go was a bad decision when his most successful post-Konami Sony project barely broke even and then with his new game Physint, it's 3-5 years out and already over budget.
Like okay, maybe they lost out creatively but it was never going to financially make sense.
I've always had a playstation since 96. They desperately need creativity, their output has become stagnant. I get from a business perspective it's 'safer', but safer can mean 'boring' for the actual players. Sometimes you need to invest in your future and make a few swings and misses to innovate for the next new thing. The weird thing about this, is it's actually less of a risk with Kojima returning to 'tactical espionage', a successor to a series that defined what playstation can be. The Tagline - A new tactical espionage game from the creator of Metal Gear Solid would have sold millions and much easier to sell than Death Stranding because it's something people would have wanted They just gave that to Xbox.
This was dropped because of investors balking at the long development big budget game that isn't a guaranteed hit like Wolverine, using already existing IP and wanting short returns on their investment. Investors want more Wolverines.
If you don't invest in yourself and burn some cash, you are no longer a trend setter, you are a sheep or a follower of trends from other games. If Sony will lose it's prestige of being the HBO of single player games, then what is it? They need to do something because their output is getting old very fast, it was amazing during the PS4 era but they haven't really done anything new or groundbreaking in a decade. It's a console for competent mediocre games at the moment.
That said, it's easy to say "They just need to burn money to win people" when that just failed for them recently. Words are cheap, but they just lost a quarter of a billion with Concord. Expecting them to just happily burn more money is insane.
People act so confused as to why lay offs happen and then ask companies to use up all their money to purposely not make money in hopes of making money in the future
