Honestly I feel like that’s just the gaming industry in a nutshell

It’s the AAA gaming industry, save for a few studios.

Indie and independent games are getting better and better.

It's a misconception about indie, in indie game development there are literally 99 games that flop and die for 1 that succeeds, and you don't even hear about those that died having 100 players peak on release day.

Indie dev here. It's not easier at all. It's way harder to find funding or support now than a few years ago.

And yes it's survivorship bias. 99% of projects fail and we only cherry pick hits, just to say something about the industry. We can't all be Balatro.

And if it is easier to make them, then even more people make the games and it becomes even harder to stand out.

Covid-era funding was an outlier due to everyone being stuck at home and the historically low interest rates.

The irony is the historical average for the fed-rate is 5%, which is where the rates jumped to in 2025. Companies have simply grown so accustomed to the rate being almost zero, they're like a pet that acts starving despite being regularly fed.

At this point I'd like to hope they'll invest in stuff again, but it seems like they have no interest until the fed-rate is below 1% again.
