It's not mandatory but the population of Indonesia is primarily Islamic, with a minority Christian population and some others. The Indonesian government itself recognizes 6 distinct religions (and you must choose which one you will have on your government ID), these are Islam, Christianity/Catholicism, Protestantism (considered separate to being a Catholic), Hinduism, Buddhism, and Confucianism.
As for how they are dressed and acting, it's mostly a personal choice of the individual with how they dress and how observant they are of their religious practices. I say "mostly" because the law states that it is entirely up to the women, but there are regions that have extra autonomy that require wearing Islamic attire.
There can also be a lot of societal pressure to conform as well as dress codes to follow at work or at school.
You'll see a mix. Generally you won't see women showing a lot of skin in Indonesia, but you can see huge contrasts depending on the setting. A person who dresses modestly and wears a head scarf at work might show up to the mall dressed in ripped jeans and a band shirt without a head scarf.

I lived in Indonesia for a couple of years - caveat, this was 20 years ago and things may have changed. That said...
Indonesia is vast, populous and diverse. Most Indonesians speak a minimum of 2 languages, Bahasa Indonesia and a localised language such as Javanese, and a good chunk can speak 3 or more. There are Hindu areas (Bali, for example), Christian areas (much of Papua is Protestant while much of Flores is Catholic for example), and the relatively large Chinese-Indonesian population is Buddhist or Christian.
In public life politicians and prominent people will almost always profess a belief in Islam and it is widely expected to do so. That said Indonesia is not a Muslim country by definition - it has an ideology called pancasila which basically means you must believe in one god but not by definition Allah. I am not religious but when people asked me (and they did) I would claim Christianity just to smooth the way.
All this leads to a huge variety in experience and nobody really cares. Some women wear hijabs, some twerk, some drink alcohol (though its not really a large part of Indonesian culture) and some don't. In isolated communities strong norms exist for that area, but in the big cities it's a real melting pot.

In my clubbing days (long since gone!) I used to sometimes go with some Muslim lads. They wouldn't drink or take pills but would still be out all night and sometimes have a cheeky joint at the end of the night!

Fellow SEA people here, This is what we called jedag-jedug, it's a sub-culture for Indonesia funkot scene that was maned by a one-band keyboardist and uses a lot of sound samples that was arranged by the keyboard player (Repetitive rhythm pattern, bass line and build-ups for the track only by using keyboard).
