Fake notice on London Underground mocks people wearing smart glasses

I actually do like the idea of a screen in glasses, but the camera is a total dealbreaker for me.

Live translation on glasses would be pretty sweet if they were linked to airpods so you'd get the full breakdown on the glasses

u/ragingrashawn 17h ago
Some already exist look up "even realities" glasses. They translate languages live on your glasses lense.

My uncle is essentially deaf and I've been looking into options for him. I'm hoping to find a pair that can transcribe conversations into subtitles in real time on the fly. He really struggles in conversation and that would be a game changer for him. But my knowledge none of the models on the market are quite there yet. I last looked into it about a year ago. Are you saying there are models out there now that can do this?

quite a few translation glasses exist, as do translation headphones
i've used a few. maybe i havent used the best ones. but i didn't find them quite as useful as I expected. trying to switch between reading the HUD translation and interacting with the speaker was somehow more cumbersome and confusing than just using google translate's conversation mode on my phone and glancing at it periodically.
granted, i havent tried any recent ones in like 8 months, and there's a good chance they've gotten better since then

This is the downside to the anti-smart glasses movement. Lots of people use them for accessibility reasons and are now being ostracised as a result.
63
u/nowhereman136 17h ago
I want the same amount of tech in my glasses as i have in my smart watch. Basically simple notifications, turn by turn directions, and open ear headphones (maybe live translation). I literally cant think of anything else id want out of smart glasses. I dont want full screen coverage and i for sure dont want a camera
22
u/Bitter_Librarian8442 16h ago
I agree... but to play devils advocate...
I think a camera could be handy for screenshotting notes, identifying things or more detail for, there's a bunch of nifty things a camera on glasses could do.... but...
I really don't think those things are worth actually having them.
I looked at Xreals, because I thought it'd be cool for youtube etc. When i saw the price and saw it was comparable to a meta quest3, i thought I may aswell get a full vr set for the immersion. Sold it a month later. Very good, excellent in fact, just didn't use it as much as I thought I would.
Aaanyway, after all that, I can see the pros of a camera, but a bit of niftyness isn't worth letting the weirdos run amok with them.

u/nowhereman136 16h ago
I can definitely see uses for a camera. When I go out I'm taking pictures of plants and asking google "what is this". That would be easier if I were wearing glasses and looked at the flower and asked built in AI assistant. Still, I don't need that feature so much that it's worth risking other people abusing that feature. I don't want my glasses to replace my phone, so as long as I have that then I use that camera. For more advanced video recording, I'll just use a gopro.
As for vr glasses. I see the appeal and don't mind them being a thing, but I wouldnt use one. I want as minimalist screen on my glasses as possible. I don't want to plug into a vr headset and be completely detacted from my surroundings. But again, that's a me decision, I don't have a problem if other people do it.

Rather than asking AI you should consider putting the photos on iNaturalist as an observation. You'll probably get a more accurate identification while contributing to a global biodiversity atlas and various fields of research.
I use the mobile app mostly for identifying spiders and bugs that wander into my home unsolicited. Spider friends get relocated to best location for them to do their thing. Invasive bugs get the squish
8
u/nowhereman136 16h ago
Usually when someone suggest a specific app, it's just wall paper over an Ai model. Like "this app tells you what flower it is" is really just "this app sends your photo to chatgpt and then we tell you what chatgpt says".
But inaturalist looks pretty cool. Definitely worth using if it helps conservation efforts
9
u/blueberrysprinkles 14h ago
inaturalist has been going for waaaaaay before LLMs became a thing. I've used it for maybe a decade now. It's also way more useful and important than LLMs!

u/captainfarthing 12h ago edited 12h ago
It very much depends whether there are any users interested in identifying the type of organisms you upload, I keep tabs on a few specific groups of fungi in my country so I'm often the one doing IDs, but when I upload plants I find it pretty unusual for anyone to confirm my IDs.
I like PictureThis for plants, I've got a degree in horticulture/botany so I know when its guess is very wrong (which is pretty rare for native plants in the UK) and mostly use it because I already know a plant but forgot its name. They hired experienced professional botanists to help train the AI, I worked with one who did it for a while.
5
u/FUBARded 16h ago
Even that's changing, unfortunately...
The new Apple Watches have functionality that allows for constant audio recording that it can transcribe or provide AI conversation summaries/highlights. Insanity.
I don't believe it allows for direct saving of the full audio clips so it's not quite as invasive as the smart glasses, but very soon many millions of people are going to be recording all audio within their general vicinity via a method that's even harder to spot than the smart glasses.
Smart glasses with cameras and features like this on a smart watch are incredible mobility aids for the blind and deaf, but unfortunately the vast majority of users will just use them to record people without consent. Yes not everyone recording is a pervert and could be doing it for innocent reasons, but we're already surveilled way too much. Making it mainstream for people to have the ability to record others without their knowledge is the last bloody thing we need.

The tech is cool. Even the camera is cool, when used without ill intent. I feel like it just needs a very visible indicator when it's recording and it's pretty much fine. I'm sure people would figure out how to hide it still, but I mean that can be true for any hidden camera.

Now if only I could get some that didn't look completely out of place. I want glasses with extra features, not a clunky piece of technology that is in the rough shape of glasses.
I dont get why that is so hard. There was a company that already had that and Goolge bought them up and they haven't been seen again since. I don't need super AR glasses, I want to be able to see notifications on my lenses. Is that so much to ask for a simple HUD built into some glasses instead of this unnecessary overkill?

•
u/Krell356 11h ago
Its a pity too. The old ones I was talking about were like 1k a pop and required you to actually go in for a proper fitting, but looked like normal glasses and had a display that was basically invisible if you were the one wearing the glasses. They were aimed as a business oriented HUD glasses for CEO types.
Overpriced, but exactly the kind of thing I was willing to buy if I could afford it. Now its all AR headset shit which is useful, but doesn't even remotely look like normal glasses.

u/Gupperz 17h ago
Wow I thought it was generic term for just... whatever, like scamp or jerk
87
u/chchcherrybomb37 16h ago
Well we will call people nonces as an insult without wanting to specifically call them a paedo- it’s the same as calling someone a twat, but it literally means paedo.
29
u/MassiveBlue1 16h ago
tbh calling someone a nonce is worse than calling them a cunt/ twat because of the specific implications - unless it's linked to a good joke about an actual nonce

My glasses have small magnets set into top, outermost corner of the lenses. We were visiting with some family friends from London and they asked me if my glasses were "those recording glasses"... nope, just magnets for my sunglasses lenses to latch on to. But the idea that people think my glasses are these makes me embarrassed and I don't even have them :*(
139
u/External_Carob2128 18h ago
I spoke to an optician who told me the only people coming in to have lenses fitted into smart glasses were older men. And… that it’s making the staff uncomfortable that it’s just that demographic.
I don’t care how many women and celebs they pay to put into the ads, there’s a clear market of people buying and wearing them.
Anyone wearing those glasses 1. Doesn’t care about other people’s privacy and their rights. 2 probably needs their hard drives checking.

Or blind. I have a friend who is legally blind, though he can still kind of see, but not in too much detail. He has a pair of these and has them snap a pic and then AI describes in his ear what it is, or even can read things for him. Kind of clever, but sucks that he might come off as a creeper.

12
u/JesusAndMaryKate 15h ago
Deaf people aren't all older men though. The fact that they're only seeing one demographic highlights that the glasses are (in most cases) not being used for accessibility features.
•
u/emvaz 11h ago
A lot of older men will have received permanent hearing damage from working in factories, or building sites, clubs, security for football matches ect
Because when they were working in those places there simply wasn't as much health and safety legislation as there is now-a-days. Including mandates for ear defenders over a certain decibel now a day's. I say this as someone who knows multiple older men with hearing damage due to their past work, some of those men do not get on well with hearing aids either and choose to lipread instead.

You can easily differentiate when someone is using a smart phone to record. Like the cameras are plain obvious.
Of course someone can just take their phone out and record someone, but it’s not hidden.
This glasses are super sneaky, you can be filmed without even noticing. And that’s kinda creepy.

I have a pair of smart glasses…I use them to record holidays as I LOVE renting boats and setting out to sea…so I’ve dropped my phone in the waters once and the glasses were a game changer for me! I record videos of sailing, the sea, sunset…I don’t record people (other than my family who are with me) and I don’t wear them in places like public transport…even if I did I wouldn’t be recording. So what’s the issue? Is it just that people record others without consent?
•
u/Shneancy 3h ago
yup, exactly. if everyone was respectful and only ever recorded people in public (in a way that they can be identified, nobody's mad about being a dot on a cityscape video) with their consent those glasses would not be an issue. unfortunately that isn't the case and that tech allows creeps and pervs to record others without them noticing, so most people have become vigilant to chunky glasses with camera-shaped holes in them
•
u/_poh 4h ago
It's that Reddit has permanently deemed these "perv" glasses after a video months ago had a dude pay somebody to have the red light, that indicates videoing, disabled. There's a total lack of critical thinking in that these people for some reason think the $400 smart glasses that you wear on your face are somehow more concealable than a $20 micro camera the size of a button I can have prime delivered next day.

I hate the way this technology has been received. Not by the general public but by those pieces of shit who decided that being a perv in them was acceptable to them and just went about it.
This technology could've been transformative for visually impaired people. AR features could help the visually impaired see a bus number coming down the street, assisted with on foot navigation, reading labels. All of this opportunity for making the world more accessible for people just thrown away because some people can't keep their hands off their dicks.
Thanks for ruining this technology for everyone, forever.
The public outrage is completely justified and totally correct. What could've been a useful thing ruined by fuckheads, yet again.
