Samsung found a real-life Tim Cook in New Zealand to promote the Galaxy Z Fold 8

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 ad features a real New Zealander named Tim Cook who happens to look remarkably similar to Apple CEO Tim Cook.
Samsung used him to promote the Fold8, turning the coincidence into a cheeky jab at Apple. So yes, it really is a “Tim Cook” in the ad, just not the Tim Cook. [Samsung says ‘Tim Cook’ bought a Galaxy Fold]
•
u/zensms 10h ago
Idk but to me now, the effort Samsung goes for marketing is really admirable!
•
u/Santeriabro 8h ago
Probably a little more cheesy than admirable, think about how many execs this idea went through that laughed like bezos about how clever and funny this is.
•
•
u/NoMedicine3572 10h ago
Apple did something similar to Samsung by entering the foldable market, so I guess Samsung is taking its revenge. 😄
And the best part? Samsung reportedly makes the foldable displays for Apple’s new iPhone Duo, with reports suggesting Apple could be paying around $250 per display.
•
u/cakestapler 9h ago edited 42m ago
iPhones have long used parts provided by Samsung such as flash memory, early processors, and now OLED displays, since it was first created. Apple uses their own chips made by TSMC now, but they are not a fabricator like Samsung is as one of the main DRAM and NAND players. So it’s really not surprising or anything new. They also used LG displays for a time pre-OLED (edit: and actually still do partially at least as recently as the iPhone 17). Samsung doesn’t make all their parts either. Some of their phones have used Qualcomm Snapdragon processors for as long as I can remember since they perform better than their in-house chips.
Basically, none of these companies make the best version of all the parts required to make a phone, so they all buy from each other.
•
u/neur0 7h ago
So basically fans simp for brands while these companies line their pockets anyway they can?
•
•
u/cakestapler 3h ago
Pretty much. We call this coopetition. For Apple it would be detrimental not to use Samsung to manufacture their components as a leader in mobile OLED and memory. For Samsung it would hurt their revenue more to turn away supplying hundreds of millions of components for the most popular phone models on the planet.
•
u/tiradium 57m ago
Ok but lets say hypothetically Samsung decides to no longer supply Apple with those parts after their contract ends. Can Apple find another supplier that will provide them with the same things as Samsung? I doubt it , they can probably get something from Chinese makers but the quality and volume will definitely suffer
•
u/cakestapler 44m ago
Apple actually currently still buys displays from manufacturers besides Samsung, although they provide the bulk. I assume they would likely lean more heavily on LG and possibly other manufacturers like BOE who also makes foldable displays (Samsung patent lawsuits aside). I doubt quality would suffer as you can’t tell the difference now, but volume could potentially. I have no idea what sort of capacity LG could ramp up to. The reason Samsung likely wouldn’t do that is how does that benefit them? Even if it helped their parent company sell more phones, it likely wouldn’t make up for the billions in lost revenue supplying parts to Apple.
•
•
u/artificialpolymer 7h ago
I mean, Apple doesn't just take a Samsung part and put it in the phone. Apple designs its own displays, then hands over the blueprints to Samsung to have them manufactured.
Also, Samsung Display is not Samsung Mobile. It's an entirely different branch, and often does not put Samsung Mobile at the top of its priorities if there's a more lucrative contract from another company.
→ More replies (3)•
u/cakestapler 4h ago
Technically true, but Samsung Display is a subsidiary which is 85% owned by Samsung Electronics. By that logic, Samsung (Electronics) phones don’t use their own displays either.
Point being, Apple using Samsung parts is not anything new, including some directly from Samsung Electronics like the majority of DRAM in their current iPhones. Some they design (screens), some they just buy (memory).
•
u/artificialpolymer 3h ago
What I mean is that the Samsung manufacturing displays is an entirely different branch of the company with its own goals. If Samsung Mobile wants to have a display made, they need to submit it to Samsung Display and pay for it in the exact same way any other third-party company, like Apple, does. There's no priority given to Samsung Mobile, and there's no knowledge being shared about other companies' technologies. If Samsung Mobile comes to Samsung Display with a $100 million contract for their new phones, but then Dell pulls up with a $200 million contract for their laptop screens, they will prioritize Dell.
•
u/cakestapler 2h ago
Yeah man, I'm just pointing out Apple has used Samsung parts for the better part of 20 years, not providing an exhaustive explanation of Samsung subsidiary corporate structure and business practices. I'm not sure how this conversation is even relevant to what I said.
→ More replies (5)•
u/Zestyclose-Degree443 6h ago
Believe it or not they are two completely different companies and have nothing to do with each other (Samsung display and Samsung electronics)
•
u/Evening_Rock5850 4h ago
Different companies yes, 'have nothing to do with each other' is not true at all.
Virtually every large company has subsidiaries. Both companies are separate legally and have separate leadership; but both are a subsidiary of the "Samsung Group." Samsung Electronics also owns a very very large portion of Samsung Display.
•
u/cakestapler 3h ago
That would be like saying Cricket has nothing to do with AT&T. Samsung Electronics owns 85% of Samsung Display. Yes, they are different corporations, but one is owned almost entirely by the other.
•
•
u/timmy7445 4h ago
Are you a fanboy or something
•
u/RicardoIzecsonKaka 2h ago
The way they are talking makes you think they get a part of that money lmao. A big corpo is making money and they are happy about it rather than a new competitor entering the field which would be better for the consumer. I don’t even like foldable but now samsung would have to put more effort on their devices which would only be better for the consumer
•
u/Intentionallyabadger 9h ago
It’s been known for years that Apple uses stuff from Samsung.
It must be a very lucrative partnership because despite being their biggest competitor, Samsung has continued it.
It’s very common nowadays for many things. Eg Mazda using Huawei tech.

u/Evening_Rock5850 4h ago
It's just business.
If Samsung somehow refused to produce components for Apple; it wouldn't prevent Apple from releasing the iPhone. It would just make them take billions of dollars worth of business to another manufacturer. And not using Samsung displays is unlikely to harm Apple in a way that makes those billions lost even remotely worth it.
It's also worth noting that they're not off the shelf Samsung displays. You can't get the exact same display in any Samsung phone, for example. It's a custom part designed by Apple that is manufactured by Samsung. Samsung has the equipment and the technical know-how to build displays; but they're not the only one. And since it's Apple's own design, it really wouldn't be earth-shattering for them to move to another manufacturer. The main thing from Apple's POV is that Samsung is large enough to be a single supplier for all of these displays; so they don't have to deal with variations from using multiple manufacturers. Not a lot of companies have enough capacity to produce enough parts for a product as massive as the iPhone.
So both companies benefit from the deal far more than they are in any way 'harmed' by it. It's that lovely business term that boardrooms love... 'synergy.'
•
u/Intentionallyabadger 4h ago
Yeah it’s just Samsung electronics marketing having a laugh.
Always weird to see tribal lines about Apple vs Samsung haha but it is what it is.
•
u/Evening_Rock5850 4h ago
Yep. Back when Apple ran their "Mac vs PC", Microsoft had a whole division making software for the Mac, and Apple was making bank selling songs on iTunes for Windows.
All tribalism is stupid. But brand tribalism seems to be a unique kind of stupid. They're just companies. Anyone can buy their products. Anyone can invest in them. Choosing the product you like best is completely fine. But having this weird reaction some people have to finding out someone else preferred a different product is a genuinely unique kind of bizarre.
In all the years I've been on this planet I've yet to become convinced of any reason I should care what brand of car someone who isn't me drives, or what brand of phone someone who isn't me has in their pocket.
•
u/Intentionallyabadger 3h ago
Yeah I saw this whole comment thread on Instagram and these two guys were just going at it.
Do they get 50cents per comment? If so where do I sign up?
If I like a product, I’ll just get it. I’m not sure why I have to defend my decision.. it’s my life anyway.
•
u/BestShaunaEU 8h ago
If you think that Apple using Samsung to make parts for their phones is more advantageous for Samsung than Apple you’re wildly wrong lmao.
•
•
u/LIONEL14JESSE 1h ago
Samsung’s display business is entirely separate from their phone business. Their phone company negotiates and purchases displays the same as any other maker.
Apple does not pay Samsung the phone manufacturer $250 per display.
•
•
u/TheCosmicMilkshake 4h ago
Their strategy is basically a wolf in sheep’s clothing; they try to appear like “one of us” while they exploit their workers and destroy the planet. Apparently you’re their target audience.
Their only goal is to get people to consume overpriced crap they don’t need and provide value to their shareholders, anything beyond that is duplicitous and performative. Calling a megacorporation’s marketing “admirable” is pathetic.
•
u/hkg_shumai 7h ago
Like a neglected child screaming for attention. After all these years Apple still lives rent free in their heads.
•
u/nzlax 9h ago
You mean cringe. They tweeted like 10 times yesterday over the Duo. They big jealous.
•
u/Various_Reaction8348 9h ago
What cringe.. That's literally their screen on apple device.. By tweeting it not also increases the sale of the device.. This also increase the sale of their own screens.. Win win situation for them...
•
u/Koraboros 9h ago
You see how Apple never namedrops any other company these days? When they do that, they place themselves on another level, metaphorically speaking. Samsung is doing the exact opposite and has done for a long time.
•
u/SolKaynn 7h ago
If apple name drops another company they know theyre gonna get their shit pushed in by all the comparisons lmfao
•
•
•
u/EirianWare 8h ago
Becuase it will be suicide if apple did that, no? Samsung phones miles ahead apple phones
•
u/hkg_shumai 7h ago
You don’t see Coke mentioning Pepsi in their ads or do a coke vs pepsi challenge do you?
•
•
→ More replies (1)•
•
u/nzlax 9h ago
“It’s literally their screen” removes any nuance about the parts catalogue of an iPhone. Apple designs all of their parts. I don’t care who makes the part, when it’s commissioned to Apple’s specs.
Any ad where company A has to talk about company B to sell company A’s product is cringe. They are a trillion dollar company. Talk about your own features and benefits. Stop leeching off the competition.
•
u/Equivalent_Camera_61 9h ago
Bootlicking Apple is certainly a life choice
•
u/nzlax 9h ago
Not bootlicking at all, I have plenty of complaints about Apple. It’s cringe no matter what company of this size does it. If Apple talked about Samsung in an ad, I’d be even more annoyed.
Argue the point instead of the immediate “bootlicking” comment. You’re better than that :)
→ More replies (5)•
u/BrokenBizkitz 7h ago
Apple started that trend in Tech ads.... Don't remember Mac guy PC guy ads with Justin Long?
Besides all of it is just corporations trying to get you to talk about the product, and it's working. Samsung will be a winner due to Samsung fans saying they had it first, Apple will be a winner because apple fans will say they released it with robust and thought out design.
Either way, both companies get talked about, both products are in the spotlight, and sales go up.
•
u/FUThead2016 9h ago
There is nothing to be jealous. All the folding screen technology inside is made by Samsung. This is a product for fools who want to flaunt theor wealth and lack of brains simultaneously.
•
u/BestShaunaEU 9h ago
Considering Apple make way, way, way more money from their phones than Samsung does I don’t think they care about where the screen is from

All I've taken from this post, and the comments within, is:
Don't fanboy for really any company, because you look like a desperate clown regardless of what side you're on
•
•
u/TurboVirgin0 7h ago
They all want as much of your money as possible while providing you as little as possible.
•
u/Thick_Koka_Noodle 7h ago
I hate fanboyism
I use Mac's for Music production, necessary evil IMO, I've never owned an iPhone mind you
I use Android because I have been since 2.3 but now I'm kinda a bit bored of the OS all these years later and Pixel hardware is awful, my Pixel 9 has been repaired twice in nearly 2 year's
Fuck it, I'm getting a Nokia 3310
•
u/pantry-pisser 8h ago
Kind of an anti-fanboy. I refuse to use Apple products, and begrudgingly use android because that's the alternative. I ain't happy about it though.
•
u/chapinscott32 7h ago
I can't stand apples locked down ecosystem. Samsung software looks like shit and is unpolished. Google's hardware has never been great and developers often don't prioritize it.
I hate all my options. I went with the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold. Maybe I'll go for like an Oppo or something next time.
•
u/YublYubl 6h ago
Chinese software has always been inconsistent for me. They have top of the line hardware, cool features and flashy animations. But when it boils down to everyday tasks they always seem unpolished / unoptimized and unreliable. I would take samsung, google or apple software anyday over them
•
u/Plus_Term_7584 4h ago
Dude, same. But my reason is much more petty: I dislike Macs because in the 2nd grade, the ones we used at school only had a single button for the mouse and no scroll wheel.
•
u/silentnight_00 10h ago
The same Samsung who mocked apple for removing the headphone jack and charger only for them to follow later?
•
•
u/Sonikku_a 5h ago
The same Samsung who got caught tweeting their phone ads “via Twitter for iPhone”.
Multiple times.
•
u/LetoTheTyrant 9h ago
While Samsung may do products earlier and supply screens to Apple, Samsung is trash. Just talk to a non fanboy who bought anything other than a phone. Samsung follows as much as Apple follows Samsung. It’s the free market. They adjust based on many factors.
•
u/Worried_Blacksmith27 8h ago
absolute bullshit. Samsung phones are as good as any iPhone. I've used many many Samsung's and iPhones and there is no discernible difference in quality. In terms of "following", Samsung as had foldable form factors for over 8 years. Apple are very late to the foldable party being probably the last one to have a foldable device.
•
u/Tackit286 8h ago
Which means what, exactly? That Apple are ‘8 years’ behind Samsung just because they decided not to make a foldable phone until they had a product they were happy with?
•
u/Fr00stee 7h ago
it means they were 8 years late to the market which means their product has nothing going for it vs the competition to make it stand out
•
u/TurboVirgin0 7h ago
Here's the thing: Apple doesn't really need something that makes it stand out. It just needs to make it a very smooth experience. Most of it's market doesn't want the best, most stand out folding phone. They want the Apple one.
•
u/Fr00stee 7h ago
if you are in a phone market where each phone is $2k just being apple is no longer enough
•
u/SvensonIV 6h ago
Apple sales disagree. We will see how the Duo will do but the foldable phones are a niche market anyway.

I'd like to really know if this kind of braindead ad campaigns really convince anyone to buy whatever brand promotes their things.
To me if feels tasteless. How would Samsung react if Apple/Xiaomi/whoever found Lee Jae-yong look alike to promote iFold or their folding phone like this? With their reputation, they would most likely sue.
•
u/BoredPandemic 30m ago
Samsung has been doing stuff like this since forever. I remember they had an advertisement with a guy with a haircut representing the notch when Apple first introduced Face ID with iPhone X. I'm sure they've been doing it before as well. Apple too did something similar with their Get A Mac campaigns in late 2000s targeting Windows PCs but in my opinion, that was much more tastefully done.
•
u/shekdown 10h ago
Kinda sad and cheap for a MNC to do this.
This is meme marketing for a small player who gets visibility. Not one of the biggest conglomerates in the World.

Id have to argue meme marketing works for all types of companies, the only constant between them is it's all types of meme marketing is aimed at the same target audience

Samsung doing a lot of such negative marketing. Price itself will be the biggest barrier to apple
